Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Our diocese today concludes The Year of the Family. It is appropriate that as we celebrate Christ the King, we recognize his Kingship as Head of our Church both visible and invisible and as the Head of each of our families. As Christians, what does it mean to have Christ as the head of our families? Simply put, it means that we want our actions, our words, our thoughts, and our prayers to reflect God s love. It means we will strive to put our faith in God above all else allowing Him to guide us in all we say and do. When we place Christ at the head of our households, we are declaring our families to be His. We make no attempt to hide the fact that we are Christians and are ready to do God s work. We must shine with the presence of Christ in our world.

This is a completely optional program. There will be two trees with tags on them. One tree will include tags for families in need and tags for service men and women stationed overseas. If you choose a tag for a service man or woman, please include an unsealed Christmas Card with a note of cheer so they don't feel forgotten during this blessed season. The second tree will hold tags of monetary donations for specific areas of our church that can use extra support. These areas include religious education programs, snow plowing expenses and heating expenses. The donations for these tags can be dropped in an envelope in the collection baskets. When you remove a tag from either tree, please replace the tag with an angel ornament provided. Thank you for your generosity in making this Christmas Season special! Feast Day Mass Our Feast Day Mass will be Friday, December 7 at 5:30 pm. We will have a special reception after the Sunday Mass on December 9 to honor and celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary.

3 November 25, 2018 Christmas Cookies Platter Fundraiser!! Sign up for donating cookies to the cookie platter fundraiser this Christmas. Please sign up to bring 3 dozen of your favorite Christmas cookie on Saturday, December 15 at 9 am to the church kitchen. We will decorate the platters with many kinds of cookies, then have them available for sale after both weekend Masses. Sign-up to purchase a platter. These can be used for family and friend events or pop it in your freezer to bring out later in the month, Thank you all for your support of this "sweet" idea! Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, NY Page 5 Volunteer Opportunities Greene Food Pantry - We collect non-perishable foods for our local food pantry. May & November we cover the hours at the Pantry. Meals On Wheels Our volunteers make the deliveries for August & February: Mon, Wed, Fri, 11:15am. Call the Parish Office to join our team! Bottle & Can Drive - drop off your refundable items in the bin next to the Rectory garage. St. Pauly Textile collection shed in our parking lot. Donate your unwanted clothes & fabric items & ICC receives 4 cents per pound collected. The next Circle of Friends gathering for cards, conversation and lunch will be Tuesday, Nov. 27. If you haven't tried this relaxing morning with friends, please join us! Cards begin at 10:30 and a potluck lunch begins at 12:00. Come for one or both! Building Fund Collection (second collection) the weekend of December 1&2. Our parish received excellent marks from the Diocesan Building Inspector this fall and we want to continue to make sure our parish is warm and safe. Thank you for your support of our parish. Christmas Penance Opportunities We will be offering a chance for Father Paul to hear your confession on Saturday, December 15 from 2:00-3:45, here at ICC. We realize that some elderly parishioners can't get up to Oxford for the Penance service, "The Light is on for You", held Monday, December 17 from 4-7 pm, so we will have this additional day available. Because we are linked with St. Josephs in Oxford, we are alternating the locations for this Diocesan Penance Service. We held it in Greene last spring before Easter. If neither of these dates fit your schedule, you can come early to the Saturday Masses and he will hear your confession beginning at 3:30. We are part of the Chenango County PCA. (pastoral care area). The next PCA meeting will be Wednesday Nov. 28 at 6:30, at St. Paul s in Norwich. We enjoyed having you join us and look forward to the spring of 2019 when we resume again....of Local Interest Uncovering the Treasures of the Crèche is the title of our six week Bible Study beginning Wednesday, November 28 and continue through Advent into the Christmas season. One area that frustrated me about "13 Reasons Why" is the almost total ignorance and absence of the real-world mental health issues behind the tragedy of teen suicide. Hannah's life seemed to be an intense concentration of the challenges a teen could face yet with very little mention of the help and healing that is available to kids who hurt. As parents, we mustn't let our kids ever suffer alone. We are the first-responders to the signs of pain and the silent cries for help. We can help connect them with professional help if needed. No one should have to go through these trials alone. This is an illness that one can recover from. There is help. There is hope. 6 November 25, 2018 Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 3 Dear friends, Opportunities in life versus closed doors: the young adults dilemma. What opportunities has God put before you? What are you pursuing that consistently leads to a dead end? Something to think about! Last Sunday I found myself with an opportunity to share stories about the authors of our Bible readings at Mass. The two youth preparing to lector were interested in my description, so I quickly recounted what I have learned in our adult Bible studies. While both authors lived during hard times, several hundred years apart, they each had fascinating life stories and amazing faith! The first author was Daniel and he lived around 600 B.C. when Israel had been conquered, divided and the people sent away to be ruled by a foreign king. He was a teenage boy, gifted with intelligence and charisma, and was chosen to live in the king's palace and be trained as a great leader. One requirement however was to worship the pagan gods of the ruler. Daniel and his young friends stood firm to their faith and refused. The second author was Saint Paul and he lived around 30 A.D. Called Saul in those days, he was part of the Roman Government that was so against Christians, they would throw them into the arena with beasts if they refused to offer sacrifices to pagan gods. One day Jesus spoke to Saul and asked why he was attacking his people. Saul was blinded for three days and had to find his way to the next town- like walking from Greene to Oxford! (Wow, my young friends said!) After Paul s conversion from Roman persecutor to faithful follower, the story of Jesus miracles and teachings were spread by word of mouth, from parent to child. Nothing was written down but Paul s letters of encouragement to the christian communities are many of our books of the New Testament. His message rings true even today: greet each other with kindness, be patient with those that disagree with you, thank God each day for your blessings, hold tight to your faith in Jesus. Don t let negative talk keep you from worshiping Jesus! Remember how steadfast Daniel and Paul were, living in a time when being a christian was very hard. Many are preparing special Christmas Music and this is a great way to begin the Advent Season. Christmas Children's Pageant The children of the parish are invited to once again participate in the Christmas Eve Pageant on Monday, December 24. This pageant concludes the Christmas Eve Mass which begins at 4:00, preceded by special Christmas Carols at 3:30. All children interested should attend practice on Sunday morning December 16 during the regular CCD class time 9-10 am. Those children not in the pageant will still have special Christmas classwork to learn about this special time of year. There will be no CCD on Sunday, December 23 or Sunday, December 30.
