3 May 27, 2018 Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, NY Page 5 The Feast of Corpus Christi, or the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ (as it is often called today), goes back to the 13th century, but it celebrates something far older: the institution of the Sacrament of Holy Communion at the Last Supper. The Feast of Corpus Christi is a moveable feast celebrating the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. It is one of the ten Holy Days of Obligation in the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church. In some countries, however, including the United States, the celebration of Corpus Christi (and thus the obligation to attend Mass) has been transferred to the following Sunday that is, one week after Trinity Sunday. Next Parish Council Meeting will be Tuesday May 29 at 6:30. Please let Joe Henninge or Mary Wentlent know that you received this change of date information. Circle of Friends Join us for our next gathering on Tuesday, May 29. This month we will be welcoming Jackie Henninge who will share her skills and supplies as we are guided through creating our own stamped greeting card. This will begin at 10:30 am. Afterwards we will enjoy lunch together. Please bring a dish to pass. Coffee/Tea provided. Circle of Friends is open to anyone who would enjoy getting out, being with friends, having a laugh or two, and sharing in some Christian Fellowship. All are welcome! The annual Metal Drive begins June 1. The rolloff is in the far corner of the parking lot - and is available to accept your donations of unwanted metal items. Please be sure the items no longer contain any fluids, i.e. freon, oil, gasoline, etc. The roll-off will be available until June 30. To the Parish New Members We will have a special reception after Mass on Sunday June 10 for the 20 new families that have joined the parish in the past 2 years. All parish members are invited to stay and introduce yourself to our new parishioners. Also at this reception we will have a special graduation gift for our high school graduates. Please plan to stop by for this special reception Volunteer Opportunities Greene Food Pantry - We collect non-perishable foods for our local food pantry. May & November we cover the hours at the Pantry. Meals On Wheels Our volunteers make the deliveries for August & February: Mon, Wed, Fri, 11:15am. Call the Parish Office to join our team! Bottle & Can Drive - drop off your refundable items in the bin next to the Rectory garage. St. Pauly Textile collection shed in our parking lot. Donate your unwanted clothes & fabric items & ICC receives 4 cents per pound collected. Outdoor Sunrise Service Monday, May 28, Memorial Day, St. Joseph Cemetery, Oxford, to honor Veterans, family & friends buried in their cemetery. 8 am American Legion salute to Veterans, 8:15 am Communion Service with Dc. David Kirsh. Seating is limited BYOC. In case of rain the salute will still take place at the memorial but the service will move inside the Chapel. 8th Annual Running for a Reason. Saturday, June 2. We are pleased to announce this year s recipient is the Link to Life program. This program supplies residents in the town of Greene with medical alert buttons. Greene Community Services is the not for profit group that provides this service to our residents. free of charge, subsidized by donations from local citizens and groups. This is a certified 5k run that goes through downtown Greene. A family friendly course that starts at the Greene Ball Flats, you may walk or run, it s your choice. Registration & Sponsor forms are the vestibule. MS/HS Youth Event Canoeing on Long Lake and Scavenger Hunt Saturday June 9 from 10-12:00 Meet in the church parking lot at 9:15 am. We will carpool up to Long Lake together. Brandon Cruz with "Cruz Outdoor Adventures" will lead our group in paddling instruction and water safety and a fun scavenger hunt activity. Brandon will supply all canoes, kayaks and life preservers. Youth Leaders Jess and Jim Trepa will coordinate a picnic lunch to follow the morning on the lake. Parents, friends, siblings welcome. We had 4 of our teachers present and Andrea Schaeffer, the Southern Tier Faith Formation leader gave a very interesting lesson on "The Creed". These workshops help our teachers understand the rich Catholic faith, so they can pass these jewels on to our children. A special thank you to Claire Gibbons for making her wonderful Tiramisu for our dessert! 2018 PCA (Pastoral Care Area) Summer Book Study. The Book Study will take place in June, July and August and wrap up before Labor Day. We will meet just 6 times... twice each month. Deacon Tim has chosen a new book entitled From Atheism to Catholicism, Nine Converts Explain Their Journey Home. The book promises to engage us with nine individual faith stories in the words of the people who traveled from no faith to fully embracing the Catholic faith. Please sign-up in the vestibule. I remember when we moved to Greene 22 years ago, and we made the decision to find the Catholic Church in town and become a member. Our first Sunday we trooped in with our seven kids (Grace wasn t born yet.) Zach was a baby and when we stayed for the coffee hour, I saw Anita swinging her baby Jennifer in her infant seat. Anita was outgoing and laughing with folks, and I gravitated to the music ministry because I felt most comfortable there. They welcomed me with open arms, although Dot Stolarcyk quickly let me know that certain folks had certain seats, and I should be mindful of that! Over the months Dot and I became good friends, and even though she was older than me, I would often ask her advice on raising a big family, and she was a wealth of information. Father Dellos often had his dog Bronco around, and this informal atmosphere made my loud and energetic family feel welcome. What was your experience like? I have been reading a book on Fruitful Congregations and the first section is on Hospitality. It begins with this verse from Matthew chapter 25 verse 35: Jesus said, I was a stranger and you welcomed me. What would happen if each person took these words seriously? We would look at the new person and see they have hopes and anxieties, desires and pains. Each person is a member of Jesus family, and Jesus wants us to treat each other as we would treat Jesus himself. With that in mind, how would you now treat a stranger? What would be the quality of the welcome? Your effort to ease the awkwardness? The enthusiasm to help them find a seat, the nursery, the bathrooms? Likewise, how do we treat those we have known a long time? Do we immediately complain about something? Do we use them as a soundboard to rattle off our list of things that irritate us that day? Let us not take our friendships for granted! Today is a new day! Let us see Christ in each other and treat them with love and respect. If there is someone who helped you feel welcome in our church, express your thanks to them personally or with a note. If this isn t possible, give thanks for them by name to God in prayer. My book closed the chapter with this prayer: Gracious God, give me a heart that remembers the strangers who may be in my path today. Peace!~Mary Wentlent
