3 November 6, 2016 Veterans Day, Friday, November 11 In honor of those who served or are currently serving we will be setting up a display of photos, memorabilia, etc., that weekend. Plus veterans will participate in the weekend s Masses. Veterans, if you have photos, memor abilia, etc., you could lend us for the display and/or if you would like to participate in either the Saturday or Sunday Mass please contact the Parish Office. You can bring your items for display in and put them on the table in the Parish Hall anytime before that weekend. Annual Holiday Pie Sale the weekend before Thanksgiving. We will be baking pies on Friday, November 18 and selling them that weekend after each Mass. There is a pre-order sheet in the vestibule & there will be additional items to purchase. All proceeds to benefit our Rel. Ed. program. We will accept donations of baking supplies: flour, sugar, apples, shortening, pie filling; drop them off in the kitchen. And looking for volunteers for baking day, any help, any amount of time. Sign-up in the vestibule. On Saturday, November 19 we will celebrate a Mass of Remembrance at our 4:00 pm Vigil Mass. We are inviting the families who have lost a loved one this past year to attend and light a candle for their loved one. During Mass Father will read the roll call of the deceased while families and parishioners light candles in their memory. Everyone is invited attend a parish pot luck supper afterwards for a little celebration of life. June P. May & November we cover the hours at the Pantry. Meals On Wheels Our volunteers make the deliveries for August & February: Mon, Wed, Fri, 11:15am. Call the Parish Office to join our team! Our Brother s Keeper We take donations of CLEAN blankets, quilts, sheets, towels, batting & fiber fill. Please bag the items. Donate your unwanted clothes & fabric items & ICC receives 4 cents per pound collected. Memorial Garden Update: We will be pur chasing the garden stakes, mulch and new flowers in the spring. There will always be general upkeep as well. The artwork will be coming in the spring. You may still make a contribution in memory of a loved one or in general. Name plaques will be ordered on a quarterly basis. We have decided to ask the Bishop to come in the spring for a blessing near when we have the May Crowning. Sleeping bags for the Homeless: Our parish will sponsor a sleeping bag workday Saturday November 12 from 9 am -3 pm. If you have come before you know this is a fun day making something that will be used this winter by the needy in our community. Bring a friend or come and make a new one. No sewing skills necessary. We are accepting clean socks, hats and mittens to be rolled up in the bags. Blanket donations will be accepted on Friday Nov. 11 and Saturday morning Nov. 12. We do not have room to store the blanket and accessory donations, so please do not drop them off sooner. Thank you! My question concerns purgatory, which we hardly ever hear bout any more. I always thought it was a place, & that a certain amount of time was to be spent in purgatory by those who still have punishment due for sin. How can the Catholic doctrine of purgatory be reconciled with the concept that the afterlife is outside of time & space? What, if anything, are we to believe? Purgatory has certainly not gone by the wayside. It is still very much a part of our faith, as every Sacrifice of the Mass & every other prayer for the dead attests. Perhaps one reason less is said about it today is that we have a lot of collected debris about purgatory to clear out of our minds. The hoary pictures of torture, pain & the scourging God - which made purgatory a kind of mini-hell - may literally scare the devil out of someone, but they re totally irrelevant to the doctrine of purgatory. These gory images grew up around the idea of purgatory through the Middle Ages & later into the Renaissance. At least two things are clear in the Catholic tradition concerning purgatory; First, the Church teaches that there is some condition or circumstance after death by which any temporal punishment remaining for sins committed during life is satisfied, & that by our prayers & good works on earth we can assist those who are in purgatory. This is simply an application of our belief in the communion of saints, which unites all who are joined in Christ, whether still on earth or in the next world. This much is taught by the church as revealed truth from God. It is, of course, something about which we would know nothing if He did not tell us. Second, it is equally clear that the official teachings of the councils & other sources of Catholic belief have no intention of answering details about purgatory - whether it is a state or condition, or a place, or whether time is involved or not. Since the world after death would not seem to have hours or days or locations in our sense of those words, it seems quite unlikely that purgatory involves place or time as we usually think of them. It is very possible that, in the burst of awareness of the reality of God & creation that might occur immediately after death, the pain that comes from our knowledge of our sins & short-comings might be so acute & intense that an entire purgatory - or cleansing, which is what the word purgatory means - could occur in an instant. While such an explanation seems to square with what we might suspect about the threshold of eternity, we simply don t know for sure. The church hasn t attempted officially to satisfy our curiosity about such questions - & probably couldn t if it tried. Fr. John J. Long after the golds and reds have carpeted the lawns this one tree holds onto its leaves tenaciously, as if to boast, I am tree, I do not change. It is a healthy reminder for me that change is an important part of life, and needs to be accepted. When Jesus taught, the Pharisees criticized His words because their image of God was narrow and pridefilled. They refused to change. To accept the words of Jesus would have meant letting go of their way of thinking, and no longer grasping at their image of God. It would have meant a change in attitude. The curled leaves on the tree remind me to let go of my narrow views of other people, to look at them through Jesus eyes, and to open my heart to the wind of the Spirit whose freeing touch will change my heart. Consequently, the feast days and Sunday Gospels this month focus on Christian ideas of fulfillment, such as heaven, resurrection, and the Second Coming of Jesus. The Gospel for this Sunday talks about resurrection from the dead. During the two centuries before Jesus time, many Jews came to believe in resurrection. The people of Israel believed God was the life -giving Creator of all that is. Many believed that God, who gives life to the living, would also give life to the dead. The people called the Sadducees don t believe in resurrection from the dead. They ask Jesus a trick question they think will show what a silly belief resurrection from the dead is. But Jesus isn t tricked. He teaches that God is God of the living. All are alive in God. Jesus resurrection from the dead makes this belief the very heart of the Christian faith. Question from Life: What is a question you have always wanted to ask Jesus? How do you imagine life with God after death? Question from the Gospel: What experiences in your life affirm God is living? Who is alive because you remember them? Parents and Grandparents, try using this information as a basis for discussion at home. Annual World Marriage Day Celebration will be celebrated 2/12./17 at the Cathedral in Syracuse. Bishop Cunningham will celebrate the Mass & witness a Renewal of Commitment to Holy Marriage by all couples in attendance. It offers a short prayer break at your computer that can give you 24 hours of peace. They can really lift your mood throughout the day! I get them sent to my and I have come to really look forward to them! I d like to share one in particular. The title is Singing for Joy and the reflection is on Psalm 65. As you begin the retreat, they ask you to pause and allow yourself to grow still; take several breaths and become aware of God s unconditional love for you. The Psalm talks about the world singing with joy to its creator, and how we are given a soul, intellect, and free will. When we use these gifts to know and serve God and one another, we continue God s work on earth. In harmony with God, we care for the world. The retreat always closes with a question; When have I been especially aware of God s generosity in my life? How do I express my gratitude? I encourage you to seek out some kind of daily inspiration! I went to two funerals this week & that always puts me in a reflective mood about life. The funeral for Marty Delaney was a beautiful celebration of his life and Father Darr had a wonderful homily. Afterwards, Father told us he was being reassigned to a church near Syracuse so he could be near his doctors. He hasn t been well and needs to focus on his health. St. Johns in Bainbridge is not closing, but will have one Mass on the weekends. St. Agnes in Afton, which is it s mission church, will also continue to have one Mass, at least for the near future. With the election being held in Greene at our church, I wanted everyone to know that we will be renting a portable gas powered light for the parking lot for this day. We have had an electrician look at the lights as you enter our property and we are getting some quotes on some lamp post that could go up our drive and around the parking lot.
