5 June 22, 2014 The 2014 Diocesan HOPE Appeal is well underway and our parish goal is $10, All our households are asked to take home a pledge/gift envelope available on the table near the door or use the one you may have received in the mail and prayerfully consider what you can give to help fund the various ministries of the Diocese; here in Chenango County and the other 6 counties of our Diocese of Syracuse. These include: the education of our 12 seminarians, support of some 90 retired priests, hospital & college chaplains, tuition assistance for lowincome Catholic School students, youth & family ministries and Catholic Charities among many others. Reaching or surpassing our goal is proof to Bishop Cunningham that we are a vibrant and viable parish community with a bright future. No gift is too small though a suggested gift/pledge of $ ($10.00 a month) or more is you are financially able would be greatly appreciates. So please, fill our a pledge/gift envelope and place it in the regular collection basket, drop it off at the Parish Office or into the mail within the next 2 weeks. Thousands of people across the country will participate with prayer and public demonstrations during the Fortnight to stand up for religious liberty. Prayer for the Protection of Religious Liberty O God our Creator, from your provident hand we have received our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You have called us as your people and given us the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God, and your Son, Jesus Christ. Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society. We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. What is Proper Attire for Church? We usually dress according to the occasion. Attending a formal or semi-formal dinner, the theater, a concert (not the rock kind), or other special event demands that we give more attention to what we are wearing. Attending Church should be considered very special. After all, we are gathered in the house of God for the purpose & occasion of praising & worshipping Him. The clothes we wear should reflect the dignity of the occasion. Now that summer weather is here, we perhaps can take a few liberties & wear more comfortable attire. However, clothes resembling beach wear are certainly not appropriate. Common sense would dictate that we avoid wearing anything distracting, in poor taste or offensive to the sensitivity of our worshipping community.

6 Thursday Tuesday Morning Bible Study is changing to Thursday mornings, beginning Thursday, June 26, for the remainder of the series. The time will remain the same- 9:30-11:00. Babysitting is available. If you didn't register for this study but want to join us, the readings for Thursday June 26 are Judges 1:1-3:6, 6-7, Weekly Prayer Service Survey- Suggestions will be taken during the month of June. In an effort to reach out to our parish in a pastoral way, the Parish Council would like to offer other times for a prayer service each week. The current weekday prayer service is offered at 8:30 am on Thursday morning. This council is willing to help coordinate a prayer service at another time that might be more convenient to more people. Please note that a prayer service includes a welcome, a chance to share prayer concerns in an informal atmosphere, readings from the Bible, receiving communion, and a closing blessing. It last only about minutes. Please give us your opinion, by writing your idea on the white tablet in the vestibule and placing it in the suggestion jar. Thank you! The Parish Council would like to offer 2 events for the adults in our parish. If anyone is interested in helping plan and coordinate a Ladies Tea as well as a Men s Prayer Breakfast please see Mary Wentlent. Go to the diocesan website and click on events to find retreats, picnics, workshops, Masses and more. Page 4 Dear friends, Do you know what I like about the Bible Study class? First of all, learning the bigger story that flows through the Bible, and listening to Jeff Cavins who is funny and engaging. But it s also the hour out of my week that I can share an Intelligent, Christian conversation with a few adults who have all become good friends. We talk about things that really matter in life like day-today struggles with faith. That actually is the common issue we are learning about that weaves its way through the books of the Bible. Whether it was 2000 years ago or yesterday, human beings struggle with letting go of their plans for life and letting God be in control. I am thankful today for the seven faithful friends who come together for Bible Study each week. I m also thankful for the pioneer group that meets during the school year. It was because of Nancy & Steve Amell s generosity that we even have this series. If you can join us for even one class, you won t be disappointed. The readings for each class are listed in the bulletin. Our outdoor movie night was last Saturday. We invited the community via the Chenango American newspaper and Facebook. By 8 p.m. there were more than 50 parents, youth and children, throwing the football, chatting and making s mores at the bonfire. The movie started at sunset (8:45). Tim Paske and his family welcomed everyone to our parish and then we all enjoyed the Disney movie Frozen on the back wall of the church. (It was a very cold evening and some people wrapped up in blankets and sleeping bags to keep from being frozen themselves!) You may remember we purchased the projector and speakers with the McDevitt Grant money last summer. We are showing this community a little at a time that we are a welcoming, friendly parish.
