What is Pentecost? Pentecost commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Blessed Mother and Apostles, fifty days after the Resurrection of Christ. Pentecost was a turning point for the early Church and it marked the beginning of the first evangelization. Where the Apostles had been timid and unsuccessful doing the Lord s work, the Holy Spirit empowered them with many gifts and they began to proclaim the Good News starting with their fellow Jews and then turning their evangelization efforts to the gentile nations throughout the Roman Empire. The Holy Spirit continues to move the Church to action today, inviting us to share the love and salvation of Jesus Christ with others. We are updating the prayer chain list run by Angie Babcock. If you would like to be a part of this ministry call Pat by May 23.

5 May 17, 2015 Father s Notes A Liturgical Note - The Preparation of the Gifts. 49. At the beginning of the liturgy of the Eucharist the gifts, which will become Christ s body and blood, are brought to the altar. First the altar, the Lord s table, which is the center of the whole Eucharistic liturgy, is prepared: the corporal, purificator, missal, and chalice are placed on it (unless the chalice is prepared at a side table). The gifts are then brought forwar4d. It is desirable for the faithful to present the bread and wine, which are accepted by the priest or deacon at a convenient place. The gifts are placed on the altar to the accompaniment of the prescribed texts. Even though the faithful no longer, as in the past, bring the bread and wine for the liturgy from their homes, the rite of carrying up the gifts retains the same spiritual value and meaning. This is also the time to receive money or other gifts for the church or the poor brought by the faithful or collected at the Mass. These are to be put in a suitable place not on the altar. 50. The procession bringing the gifts is accompanied by the presentation song, which continues at least until the gifts have been placed on the altar. 51. The gifts on the altar and the altar itself may be incensed. This is a symbol of the Church s offering and prayer going up to God. Afterward the deacon or other minister may incense the priest and the people. 52. The priest then washes his hands as an expression of his desire to be cleansed within. 53. Once the gifts have been placed on the altar and the accompanying rites completed, the preparation of the gifts comes to an end through the invitation to pray with the priest and the prayer over the gifts, which are a preparation for the Eucharistic prayer. From the General Instruction on the Roman Missal It is a great honor to represent the worshipping community by being the Gift Bearers at Mass. All are invited and encouraged to participate in this way: families, widows/widowers, single & divorced persons. Please indicate your desire to serve in this way to an Usher/Greeter before Mass or respond positively if asked by one of them to be a Gift Bearer. Wisdom from our Catholic Tradition I feel in my soul an unfathomable abyss which only God can fill. I lose myself in God as a drop does in the ocean. Sr. Marie Faustina Kowalska Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 3 What then Unites Us? Food For Thought Proverbs 29:18 says, Where there is no vision, the people perish. It is becoming increasingly difficult to discern what the vision for America is. Do we really know who we are and what we stand for? Are we willing to think for ourselves, or do we believe media pundits have all the answers?... As we enter the next election season, I hope we will each be willing to take a step back and ask the question, What is of crucial importance to me and to the future of our nation. Dr. Ben Carson, MD, world famous neurosurgeon. The World Meeting of Families, Philadelphia (Sept ), The Diocese is sending two bus trips to attend the Papal Mass on September 27! Space is extremely limited, and pilgrims should be prepared for a physically demanding trip. Youth Groups can register at syrpapalmassyouth. eventbrite.com; young adults & families register at: syrpapalmassadultfam.eventbrite.com Don't miss this once-in-a-lifetime experience! World Meeting of Families 2015 Contest The theme of this year s meeting is Love is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive, and will emphasize the impact of love in our families on our society. Family scholarships are available, visit for details. Application deadline 5/31. The Good News Center of Utica is providing $500 grant to the winning family to defray expenses. A Healthy Body / Healthy Soul - Exercise: Improve Your Mood Need an emotional lift? Or need to blow off some steam after a stressful day? A workout at the gym or a brisk 30-minute walk can help. Physical activity stimulates various brain chemicals that may leave you feeling happier & more relaxed. You may also feel better about your appearance & yourself when you exercise regularly, which can boost your confidence & improve your self-esteem. Mayo Clinic, 11/13 Last week at the Circle of Friends meeting, Mary Lademan offered to send a little Sunshine to parishioners who are sick or just feeling under the weather. Let the Church Office or Mary know if you have a friend or loved one who could use a note of encouragement or small flower bouquet sent to their home.

Page 4 Dear friends, I don t know about you, but I enjoyed the flower sale last weekend mainly because it was such a mood lifter to see the hall full of flowers after our cold winter! Thank you to all who purchased flowers and helped with the selling. We made $425 profit! Nice job!! Don t forget to look thru your shed for any unwanted scrap metal for the building and grounds fundraiser. The large bin will be delivered to our parking lot on Monday May 18 th and will remain for two weeks. Pass the word to your friends and neighbors. The new sacristy team has gotten off to a great start with parishioners taking care of the votive candles, the sacristy before and after Mass as well as the altar cloth care. Thank you to the 21 people who were willing to be on rotating teams. If you are a lector or Eucharistic minister, make sure you stop in the sacristy before Mass and let them know you are there, and introduce yourself if needed! It s that time of year again for the Celebration of Youth award. This was started by Msgr. Putano as a way to recognize and encourage our young people who volunteer for the parish. I like to give this award to our senior most high school students first, so this year Megan Brown and Maria Brown were nominated. Megan was an altar server when she was younger and currently cantors at the Saturday night Mass. Her Christian attitude of love to others and kindness is carried over in the activities she is involved in at school and in her community. Megan is the daughter of Don and Linda Brown and the granddaughter of Bev and Jim Doughty. Maria Brown has volunteered as a teaching assistant on Sunday mornings with religious education. She has a quiet, gentle nature, and as a result, the children in her classes feel welcome and loved. Maria has also volunteered with her mother and sisters for many parish and community events, where she reaches out to the elderly in a compassionate and thoughtful way. Maria is the daughter of Angela Fiato and sister to Sophia and Nadia! It is my pleasure to nominate these two young people! They are invited to a Mass and reception on May 31 at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Endicott. Congratulations Maria and Megan! Have a wonderful week! Peace! ~Mary Wentlent
