The Epiphany of the Lord 8 January 2012 Saint Luke Church, Whitestone, New York FROM THE DESK OF MSGR. TOSI --- They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. (Matthew 2:1-12) Today is the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord. Sometimes called the feast of the Three Kings or Little Christmas the feast of the Epiphany reveals Jesus as savior for all peoples and nations represented by the three Wise Men. In the Gospel Jesus is first made known to the Jewish people in the persons of the shepherds. Today Jesus is savior not limited or restricted to any one people. He is the light for all people. The story of the three kings is so much a part of the Christmas story. How can we forget the star whose mission was to guide the path to Jesus? Or King Herod, troubled by news of the birth of a king plotting to already get rid of him? Or the angel warning the three kings not to return to Herod but to go home by another way? Yet it is the three kings who so occupy our attention. They followed the star determined to worship this newborn king of the Jews. And when they found the child they bowed down and did him homage and offered Jesus gifts they had brought with them. We also are on a journey to find and worship Christ who reveals Himself to us in so many ways - in people, places and yes, even through things. So many stars that lead us ever closer to the Lord. AND like the Wise Men we offer our gifts and talents to give Him homage. These God given treasures come in all manner of shapes and manner of ways and are given to all to be shared not at the feet of Jesus but in service to others. We are all called to be good stewards of God s gifts. No greater homage can be shown the Lord than using our gifts for our own salvation and for the good and salvation of others especially those in need. And in so sharing our gifts - of time, talent and finances we become the star leading others to the joy and peace of Jesus. We are all called to accept the ministry of the star in today s Gospel often at personal sacrifice. You are the light of the world - let your light shine before all people. God bless. Let us pray for one another, MISSION STATEMENT As a community of believers in Jesus Christ and in Communion with the universal church, we strive to follow the Lord s command to love God and one another. Rooted in word and sacrament, we grow together as a Eucharistic community inviting all to the Good News of Jesus. Page 1
SERVING THE PRESENT; BUILDING THE FUTURE UPDATE - The parish campaign continues to offer parishioners the opportunity to let the light of Christ continue to shine through the many ministries and services provided by the parish. The campaign seeks to serve this goal by caring and maintaining the parish buildings especially the church where we gather to worship God. Having raised $2.5 million dollars we hope to reach our goal of $3 million dollars needed for repair and maintenance issues and then to build a parish center for all age groups. In order to help achieve our goal, two Commitment Weekends will be held on January14-15 and January Each will provide the opportunity to make a pledge to the campaign at Mass. So many parishioners expressed a willingness to make a pledge after the New Year. Hopefully, these weekends will make it easier to do just that. We need your help! I and your fellow parishioners ask you to prayerfully consider a multi-year pledge over a one time gift. Such a pledge increases the ability to raise the needed funds. Based on what you are able to give a year, your three to five year pledge allows the parish to finance the various projects so critical to our present and future viability. More information on Commitment Weekend is included in the center pages of this bulletin. Please - read it carefully, discuss it with the family, pray over it and come prepared next weekend to make your pledge. We have benefited by the generosity of past parishioners of Saint Luke whose sacrifice made possible the buildings we use so much. Future generations will look back at our time and give thanks and prayer for the sacrifices we made for them - and ourselves. The Capital Campaign is really not about buildings. The Campaign is about the preaching of the Gospel and providing what we need to accomplish this mission. Remember the star - it led the three kings to Jesus. Our buildings can do the same together with the people of faith, hope and charity who use them. Please - come next week to join your fellow parishioners in Serving the Present and Building the Future. Page 2 With my love and prayers and gratitude, Msgr. Tosi AND thank you to all who already made their pledge. May God bless you and reward your goodness.
SUNDAY COLLECTION January 1 $16,695 Solemnity of Mary $ 4,172 Amount Needed $13,425 Envelopes Mailed 1,883 Envelopes Received 667 SECOND COLLECTION --- Today there will be two collections: The first collection will be taken for the support of the parish. The second collection is a new collection added to the National Collection Schedule beginning this year. Called the collection for DIOCESAN MISSION the revenue will be used twofold. - It will be used when the Bishop receives appeals from various Missions for support from the Diocese of Brooklyn. - It will also be used when Mission appeals are requested from the Society of the Immaculate Conception. Your support is greatly appreciated. ************************************ FUEL COLLECTION --- Next weekend, January 14 & 15 there will be a second collection taken up at all the Masses. This collection is taken to help with the cost of heating the church during the winter months. Your generosity, as always, is greatly appreciated. THANK YOU --- THANK YOU --- Now that the 2011 Annual Catholic Appeal has ended I would once again thank all our parishioners who so generously supported this annual appeal. Due to gifts from 515 donors, a total of $145, was pledged and as of December 28, 2011 a total of $141, was collected! Our parish goal was $90,950. As you well know this appeal supports both the ministries of the diocese and the needs of the parish. The parish share of the funds raised was once again used for the repair and maintenance of the stained glass windows in the church. Once again Saint Luke ranked among the top ten parishes in total contributed ranking #7. Your goodness is truly amazing and shows your love for God and the church. So many people will benefit from your generosity in so many ways as did the parish. Again, thank you and God bless. Msgr. Tosi *********************************** IMPORTANT MEETING --- A joint meeting of the Finance Council and the Parish Pastoral Council will be held on Monday, January 9th at 7:00pm in the Rectory. Members of the Councils are urged to attend this very important first meeting of the new year. *********************************** OOPS---WE MADE A MISTAKE with the printed Schedule for Masses on New Year s Day - the Solemnity of Mary. The Holyday Schedule of Masses was printed when the schedule should have reflected the regular Sunday Mass Schedule. We are sorry for the error and whatever inconvenience it caused to our parishioners. Page 3

ST. LUKE SCHOOL CHRISTMAS FAIR 2011 The annual Saint Luke School Christmas Fair was held on Wednesday, December 14th. The School Hall was festively decorated for the occasion. Snowflakes, stockings, and ornaments hung from the ceiling. Joyous Christmas music filled the room as our 8th grade students, dressed as elves, danced around selling raffle tickets, acting as elves and wrapping gifts. Of course, Santa Claus made an appearance as well! This highly anticipated event is hosted by a group of 8th grade parents. This year special thanks goes to our co-chairladies, Mrs. Carbonara and Mrs. McDonagh. These women, along with a number of other volunteers, worked diligently to create an event that was fun for all. Needless to say, the 8th grade elves are to be commended for their help in making this year s Christmas Fair spectacular! Page 5
ATTENTION --- ALL MEMBERS OF THE GOLDEN AGE CLUB The Golden Age Club will hold their first meeting of the New Year on Thursday, January 12 at 1pm in the school hall. BREEN TUITION ASSISTANCE FUND --- A donation of $1, to the George T. Breen Tuition Assistance Fund in loving memory of George T. Breen s birthday December 21st was made by Ollie Breen and her children, Linda, Barbara, Thomas and Patricia. The George T. Breen Tuition Assistance Fund was established in 2006 (in memory of George T. Breen) to assist the families of students currently enrolled in St. Luke School with tuition payments in order to remain in and continue to receive a quality Catholic education. Donations to this fund can be made at any time, in any amount and will be used exclusively for tuition assistance. This is a great way to remember deceased loved ones in lieu of flowers, fruit baskets or other gifts. Gift acknowledgment cards are available at the rectory. It s the gift that keeps on giving through our children. Call the rectory for additional information. 9 Serving the Present; Building the Future has generated much excitement at St. Luke Church! As the campaign moves into its final weeks, please carefully consider the commitment you can make to this historic campaign. A pledge, redeemed over a three to five year period, will enable our parish to do so much! As we set our sights on the future, we recognize that the efforts we make now will have a lasting effect on our Gospel ministry in Whitestone for generations to come. My Commitment Weekend Pledge cards will be passed out during all Masses next weekend, January You can respond one of three ways: Yes! I agree to pledge today or increase my pledge. Amen! I have already made a pledge. Praying! I am thinking about my decision. You set the terms on what your pledge will be, and how you would like to pay it. It is important to fill out your name, address and telephone number, so your pledge can be properly recorded and acknowledged, and so that reminder notices can be sent directly to you. Pledge Annually Monthly Daily My Sacrifice Equals $18,000 $3,600 $300 $10.00 Daily lunch out $12,000 $2,400 $200 $6.58 $6,000 $1,200 $100 $3.28 $2,700 (3-year) $900 $75 $2.50 Two tickets to a monthly sporting event Going out to dinner once a month Daily coffee and a muffin On behalf of the parish, and all of the volunteers who have helped with Serving the Present; Building the Future, thank you for your prayers and support of this historic effort!
