Special Organ Concert in Anticipation of Pentecost Organist Gregory Santa Croce will give a short recital at the Parish of Saints John and Andrew on May 30th at 7pm. Greg is a Binghamton native and will soon begin studying organ at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. 5 May 21, 2017 Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 3 Father Lupa s Notes Communion in the Protestant Church May Catholics now receive Communion during a worship service in a Protestant church? If so, do you think they should? You may recall that one of the requirements for a Protestant to receive Communion with Catholics, even in the most urgent situations, is that his faith in the Eucharist (regarding the true presence of Jesus) must be in harmony with that of our church. This is because the Eucharistic Sacrifice and sacrament celebrate and signify the oneness of faith of those who share it. This same principle answers your new question. Naturally every ceremony commemorating the Lord s Supper, even in a Protestant church, has some similarities to our own Eucharist. All Christian churches at least believe that eating the bread and drinking the wine is a special way of recalling the death of Jesus and uniting us to him in faith. It is our belief as Catholics, however, that is the fullest Eucharistic Celebration that is, the one in which there is the true transformation of the wine and bread into the body ad blood of Christ is possible only when that liturgy is presided over by a validly ordained priest. This (along with other differences in faith and doctrine which are relevant here) means that there will be significant variations of belief between Catholics and the official positions of most Protestant churches about what is happening at a Eucharistic Liturgy, and what the Eucharist is. Thus, a Catholic may not ask for the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, Penance and the Anointing of the Sick except from a minister who has been validly ordained. It should be noted that such a policy is also a matter of courtesy and respect for the beliefs of those churches whose regulations are similar to our own. Fr. John J. Dietzan, Catholic Q & A Heartfelt Sympathy. Our prayers and condolences are extended to parishioner and musician Annie Simpson, whose husband Don passed on this past Monday. Don was a member of Zion Episcopal Church. The funeral service will be held at the Episcopal church, Tuesday, May 30, 11:30 am; followed by a reception/lunch here at Immaculate Conception. May eternal rest be granted to his immortal soul and may the Lord give Annie and her family His healing grace and peace in this time of loss. But without that union with Christ that is fostered through prayer, our energy flags, we lose fervor and we run the risk of becoming a sounding brass or tinkling cymbal. We must find time, we must make time, to be with the Lord in prayer. Following the example of the Lord Jesus himself we must go off to a place where we are alone to pray. It is only if we spend time with the Lord that our spending time with others will also be a ringing of him to others. Your first Christian duty comes in your own personal lives. Here is where the message of the Gospel has first to be preached and lived. Your first duty is your own sanctification...to move inward to the still center of your existence, where Christ is. May you continue to have a blessed Easter! Young Family News- Our parish would like to offer a weekly nursery during the Sunday Mass, so that young parents can benefit more from the Mass. We know it can be hard to concentrate with an active toddler! We have one young lady who would like to work in this nursery and we are looking for one additional person. Both individuals will be VIRTUS trained before the first nursery date is held. The idea of the nursery is to provide a fun, relaxing play time for toddlers while young parents get some quiet prayer time to worship. The Confirmation Class will be going on a whitewater rafting trip on Saturday, May 27. Please pray for their safety during this fun day trip. If you enjoyed the Lenten Bible Study and want to continue studying and learning, there are two opportunities. Sunday mornings at 9:05 there is an 8- week study on Paul s letter to the Ephesians. The second is a 10-week study on 8 Major Prophets of the Bible, meeting on Thursdays from am. All are welcome! Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 4 Dear friends, 88 people participated in the voting for new parish council members for 2017/2018. Thank you everyone who took a minute to vote. Members commit to two years on the council, and therefore each year a few are going off and a few are coming on. Nancy Amell has finished her two year term and we will miss her positive, easy going personality at the quarterly meetings. Donna Heisler has agreed to replace Bob Larkin as a Parish Trustee, so she will continue as an Ex Officio member of the Parish Council as well as the Finance Council. A huge thank you goes out to Bob Larkin for serving on this governing body of the Roman Catholic Church for the past 4 years. His expertise in legal matters was a huge benefit to the parish. Jackie Henninge will continue into her 5th year as our other Trustee. Back to the Parish Council news- Joanne Moxley agreed to run again for a seat on the council. When the votes were tallied, the new members of the council will be Joanne Moxley, Joe Henninge, Beverly Doughty and Gloria Straniero. They will join current members Kelly Erickson, Eileen Browning, Bob Hanrahan and Francis Feldpausch in guiding the parish pastorally and representing the church members when voting on future projects. If anyone has any concerns, feel free to consult a member of the council and they will bring it up at the next council meeting. The first meeting for the new fiscal year will be Tuesday May 23 at 7 pm. We will elect officers and talk about the direction the parish is heading as we head into the summer. Thank you to everyone who helped to coordinate the polish feast for Father Lupa. The parish council enjoyed planning this event and appreciates the help of Edilu and her crew of volunteers who decorated, served and cleaned up. He will be just up the road in Sherburne and we will continue to see him at funerals and special Feast Day Masses, as well as at the Sunday afternoon 4:00 pm Mass in Norwich.
