Father Hage, a new young Priest, helps manage the Fisherman s Club, which is a discernment process for college age men years old. He describes the average candidate to the Priesthood in these ways; a young man not as interested in terms like liberal and conservative, but in the task of bringing people to the lord, saving souls. Young men are drawn to this new idea of fatherhood, as expressed as one who offers sacrifice and one who serves. He may doubt his unworthiness and not be a strong practicing Catholic. We need to be merciful to them and support them. The average age in Father Hage s seminary community was 33, which means they already had careers before having a conversion experience. He shared that there is a great fear of commitment with this generation whether it is to become a priest or get married. He concludes that all vocations begin in the home. Parents can sometimes be the biggest determent to the priesthood. We need to develop a serious attitude of gratitude to our priest in our parishes, and not expect too much from them. He invites us to look at the young men in our parishes and families, and consider inviting someone to consider the priesthood. The Fisherman s Club was suggested by Bishop Cunningham and has a goal of having a presence on college campuses in our Diocese

5 April 30, 2017 Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 3 Father Lupa s Notes Communion on the tongue? When and why did the Church originate received Communion on the tongue? It does not seem likely that the bread was distributed in this manner as the Last Supper. You are right. Communion was received in the hand for about the first 1,000 years of Christian history. It was only in the late Middle Ages, generally in the 10th-11th centuries, that the change was made, about the same time that the use of unleavened bread became common in the celebration of the Eucharist. The reason seems to have been a feeling that receiving directly in the mouth was somehow more reverent. By this time, the practice of receiving Communion very infrequently, perhaps once a year or less, had become well accepted. Reception of the Eucharist by anyone but the priest had become so rare that missals of that period don t even mention Communion for lay people. Related to this decline, various customs developed with the intention of emphasizing the separation & distance between God (Jesus Christ & our selves. Receiving Communion on the tongue was one of them. The elevation during Mass, introduced into the liturgy much later was another. For the same reasons, a sense of reverence as well as history, inspired a return to Communion in the hand in the 20th century. Sticking out one s tongue is not usually considered a sign of respect in our age; extending one s hand was again seen as a sign of openness & acceptance of the gift God gives us in the Holy Eucharist. Our present ritual for receiving in the hand is patterned after that prescribed in Jerusalem Catechese about the year 350 AD. Not everyone has the same feeling about this, of course, so the Church today provides the option for each communicant to receive in the hand or on one s tongue. Fr. John Dietzen from Catholic Q & A Wisdom from our Catholic Tradition Humility is the foundation of all the other virtues; hence, in the soul in which this virtue does not exist there cannot be any other virtue except in mere appearance. St. Augustine of Hippo, Bishop & Doctor of the Church, ( ) Humility Helps Me Face My Flaws Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, but whoever humbles himself will be exalted. Matthew 23:12 Humility makes it possible for us to be untroubled about our own faults by reminding us of those of others; why should we be more perfect than anyone else Why should the shortcomings of others bother us when we recall our own? (St. Francis de Sales) Humility is a pragmatic virtue; that is, it works. It empowers us to be calm in the face of our own and others imperfections; it makes our hearts gentle out of respect ad compassion; it assists us to receive sufferings and joys in a mature fashion. Imperfection is difficult to embrace; hardness of heart is a perennial danger; exclusion of suffering is a false ideal. Humility connects us to our humanity You may find this helpful: Reflect on an incident from your life when humility worked for you, helping you deal with imperfection and suffering. Loving Jesus, teach me your way. Help me to look with compassionate love on all my sisters and brothers, and, yes, on myself. Teach me humility, humility that works to help me be calm in my fear, confident in my insecurity, and loving in my weakness. Bishop Robert F. Morneau, Humility Nature s Evidence of the Real Presence Fr. Albert J. Byrne On the evening of the last day of his October 1995 visit to the U.S., Pope John Paul II was scheduled to greet the seminarians at St. Mary s Seminary in Baltimore. It had been a very full day... the schedule was tight so the plan was simply to greet the seminarians while they stood outside on the steps. But the Pope made his way through their ranks & into the building. His plan was to first make a visit to the Blessed Sacrament. When his wishes were made known, security flew into action. They swept the building, paying close attention to the chapel where the Pope would be praying. For this purpose, highly trained dogs were used to detect any person who might be present. The dogs are trained to locate survivors in collapsed buildings after earthquakes & other disasters. These highly intelligent and eager dogs quickly went through the halls, offices and classrooms & were then sent to the chapel. They went up & down the aisles, past the pews & finally into the side chapel where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved. Upon reaching the tabernacle, the dogs sniffed, whined, pointed, & refused to leave, their attention riveted on the tabernacle, until called by their handlers. They were convinced that they discovered someone there. We Catholics know they were right- they found a real, living Person in the tabernacle! St. Joseph s Catholic Cemetery St. Joseph s Cemetery on State Street in Oxford is a beautiful, well-kept, final resting place. The cost of plots: $700 for a double, $450 for cremated remains. Plots hold 1 casket & 1 urn or 2 urns. Payment installment plans available. Call the Parish Office, , for more information.
6 Religious Instruction Sundays; 9:00-10:00 am gr. 1-7 T Go f A Ae 3rd Sunday of Easter, April 30, 2017 Sunday Readings: Acts 2.14, 22-33; 1 Peter ; Luke REFLECTION Sunday s Gospel tells every Christian s story. Two friends of Jesus meet a stranger. They are sad, afraid, and confused because the one they thought would make Israel great, Jesus, is dead. Their lives have fallen apart; their dreams are shattered. The stranger listens and then explains how Israel s prophets said the Messiah would have to suffer. The two feel their hearts burn with new hope; they ask the stranger to stay for dinner. When he blesses bread and gives it to them, they recognize Jesus. In the life of each Christian, things fall apart and dreams die. This is often when Jesus journey through death to new life begins to make sense. The Easter Jesus continues to walk with us always as the friend whose love we remember when we hear his story and break bread as he asked. Question from Life: Who has helped rekindle your hope at times you have lost hope? Question from the Gospel: In what ways do you experience the risen Jesus present with us? Parents and Grandparents, try using this information as a basis for discussion at home. If you enjoyed the Lenten Bible Study and want to continue studying and learning, there are two opportunities. Sunday morning will begin an 8 week study on Ephesians with Chapter 1 on Sunday April 30 and Chapter 2 on May 7, both beginning at 9:05. Already we learned that after Jesus died, his mother Mary went to live with the Disciple John in the city of Ephesia. The Apostle Paul wrote his Letter to the Ephesians while in prison, and he encouraged the Christians there to not just be a fan of Jesus, but be a follower; A good lesson for us today. The second is a 10-week study on 8 Major Prophets of the Bible, meeting on Thursdays from am. In the introduction we learned that the Greek word prophet means to be called out by the mouth of God. The next time you recite the creed during Mass, pay close attention to the part about God speaking through the prophets! If you would like to join us Thursday May 4, we will learn about the prophet Hosea. All are welcome! Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 4 Dear friends, It s First Communion weekend at ICC! Do you remember when you had your First Communion? Hopefully it brings back happy memories! Parents can get so preoccupied with planning, ironing wrinkled church clothes, preparing food for family to have after the Mass, settling an argument on whether your son can wear his favorite blue jeans, convincing your daughter her veil really is lovely, all with a smile on your face! Well, we are only human and sometimes the stress of big events can take its toll. But how wonderful that we are even invited to the Supper of the Lord; The Table of Plenty. Each time we receive Holy Communion, we can envision ourselves sitting at the Last Supper as one of the disciples with Jesus. Lucky for us at ICC, when we receive we can look right at the altar, at that beautiful carving of the last supper. Many thanks to the First Communion teachers Molly Cutia and Stephanie Watson for preparing our 4 children this year for this Sacrament. They have met every week, prepared a prayer box, shared a homemade loaf of bread for a special prayer partner, and experienced a Candle lighting ceremony with their family the night before their First Communion. Please keep Mia, Jacob, Skylar and Troy in your prayers. Thank you Father Lupa for celebrating the Mass! This is what s it s all about, isn t it? With May coming next week, that will not only bring Mother s Day, the spring Flower Sale, Father Lupa s Jubilee celebration, but also the annual HOPE Appeal in the Diocese of Syracuse. You will be happy to know that we exceeded our goal last year, and received a check back to the parish for $1134. By meeting our goal we were also able to receive two grants, the Heritage to be used for Young Adult Evangelization and the McDevitt Grant to be for used for youth and family evangelization. We have received these for 3 years straight, and have been able to offer many things like college age care packages, parish wide Bible Studies, support to high school students, and the popular summer trip to the Sight and Sound Theater. Thank you for supporting this parish and being part of the work we are trying to do. It s teamwork effort here at ICC. Peace! ~Mary Wentlent The Spring flowers are blooming, the perennials are peeking though the soil...stop by & enjoy the Marian Garden; meditate, pray, relax.
