When we were baptized, we were called to share in His work. Therefore we pledge ourselves to build a community where all are welcomed, loved, needed and appreciated. Because of the fact several of our Lectors & Eucharistic Ministers will be snowbirds soon we are in desperate need for some of you to step forward & help us out as Lectors or Eucharistic Minister. Training for either is very simple and the more people we get the less often people have to serve. We need them for Saturday & Sunday Masses. Everyone is welcome! When you are buying supplies for your holiday baking please consider picking up a little extra toward our Holiday Pie sale, November 21 & 22. Leave items in the parish kitchen. Apples, flour, sugar, shortening, pie filling, etc. Thank you. All Saints & All Souls All Saints - Sunday, November 1- Attending Sunday Mass fulfills your holy day obligation. All Souls - Monday, November 2, 7 pm, Mass for Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed. If you lost a loved one this past year (from Nov. 1, 2014 to present) and would like them included in our service, please contact the Parish with their information. If you need a ride to attend the Mass please call the office. Nov. 7th is Stewardship Sunday. Please pray about how you can help our parish either by joining a group or committee or increasing your financial contribution to the running of the parish. May & November we cover the hours at the Pantry. Meals On Wheels Our volunteers make the deliveries for August & February: Mon, Wed, Fri, 11:15am. Our Brother s Keeper We take donations of CLEAN blankets, quilts, sheets, towels, batting & fiber fill. & yarn. Please bag the items. Bottle & Can Drive - Please drop off your bottles & cans in the bins next to the Rectory garage. St. Pauly Textile collection shed in our parking lot. Donate your unwanted clothes & fabric items & ICC receives 5 cents per pound collected. Community Interest 50/50 Raffle to benefit the St. Joseph Cemetery Association. Food, bake sale, crafts, basket raffle. American Red Cross blood drives are held here 6 times/year. They are in need of a local Volunteer Coordinator. Volunteers are needed to set-up the hall before the drive, run the registration/check-in table, set-up & work the canteen, local publicity. 5 October 25, 2015 Father s Notes Why Do We Go to Mass? After His Resurrection, Jesus appeared to the disciples when they were gathered together. The only time he appeared to an individual was when he appeared to Mary Magdalene and he told her to go to the community and share the Good News. As Christians we find Jesus present in the community of believers gathered at Mass. When we celebrate the Mass, we repeat the Last Supper, as Jesus commanded us to do. In doing this, we remember and re-present his great act of love for us on the Cross taking our sins upon himself so that we, if we follow his commandments, can live with him forever in heaven. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains that Mass attendance on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation is the first of the six Commandments of the Church. If we give God a chance, He will help us experience the tremendous benefits of the Mass and the Eucharist. Be patient. Bring an attitude of payer and thanksgiving to Mass. If you really thought about who you are, who God is, and how much thanks you own Him, you would want to go to Mass. The Mass would become the source and center of your spiritual life. Decline in honor of Mary? Is the Rosary a thing of the past? This past October, no one had a rosary in his hand at church. Are people losing their devotion to Our Blessed Mother when they don t say the Rosary? I agree with you that people say the Rosary less now than they did 40 years ago. However, I m not sure that indicates any less love of Mary, or of Our Lord. The Rosary developed over about 400 years (12th- 16th century) when Catholics were almost completely cut off from meaningful participation in the liturgy. Indeed, the period was one of the low points in seeing the Mass as a community celebration. Because of this, & because most persons couldn t read anyway, various devotions arose as a substitute for taking a more direct part in the liturgy, especially the Eucharist. Interestingly, saying the Rosary together was one of the first ways, in modern times, that Catholics began to do anything together aloud at Mass, and to see the Mass as something more than just another private prayer, which is the way some spiritual books Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 3 described it before the present liturgical renewal. As the Mass & other sacramental ceremonies become more significant in our lives, it is understandable that certain devotions which partially substituted for them would decline in use. I really don t believe that there is a great loss of honor & love for Mary. She will inevitably hold a high place in any religion that believes her son is God. The Rosary has been & still can be, a tremendous help to Christian growth. Catholic Q & A by Fr. John J. In this regard, it is not a matter of duty of charity alone that is, the duty to give of one s abundance and sometimes even out of one s needs in order to provide what is essential for the life of a poor person. Syracuse Catholic Women s Conference - Sat., November 7, at the OnCenter, Syracuse. This year s theme is Contagious Joy! Embrace the Gift! We will have three dynamic speakers, Mass with Bishop Cunningham, Confessions, Adoration, a plated meal, & vendors. There are registration forms in the vestibule or visit for more info & online registration, plus Cost is $50 by Oct. 28, $60 by Nov. 5 [online registration closes 5 pm] and $70 at the door. Register early! There will be a bus from our area, $10 fee. Call for more Conference info and bus reservations. Pope Francis continued his message of the importance of evangelization when he visited our country a few weeks ago. Our parish would like to act on this in a real and tangible way. We are looking for people who would like to work together to find dynamic ways of inviting people into relationship with Christ in our community. Join me in discussion of what we can do as a parish to promote a spirit of invitation and welcome as a faith community. I would especially like younger families ideas and thoughts. The youth of the parish will be participating in many ways; greeters, ushers, lector to name a few. Please plan to join us for this upbeat celebration of the Mass. There will be a coffee hour afterwards. See you then! Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 4 Dear friends, Just an update on some of the great things happening at ICC! We had a nice turn out for making sleeping bags for the homeless last week. My Brothers Keeper has come up with a great pattern using donated blankets. It took 15 people about 2 ½ hours to make 5 bags. They will be warm and comfortable for someone in need and we filled them with a hat, gloves, scarves, a towel and a bag of toiletries. They will be donated to the soup kitchen in Binghamton and distributed to the needy in our community. Nice teamwork! The Skype event was successful, talking with my son Luke who is teaching in Tanzania, Africa. Almost 50 people, adults and youth, were able to see and talk with him. He had a short presentation ready with pictures of where he is teaching in Tanzania, and then answered questions from our group. The event was very well received and we will do this again in the winter or spring to check in on how things are going for Luke. He really appreciated folks coming out and having a laugh or two. Also having a conversation in English, not Swahili! Being this far away has been hard for him, and being able to share what he is learning and doing was really important. The Birthday Party/Coffee Hour was well attended and Father Lupa seemed to enjoy the singing, good food and many folks who came to wish him a Happy Birthday. Thank you to everyone who contributed and also to those who signed his card before Mass. We are blessed with such caring and thoughtful Priest. Jess Trepa had a fall youth event for the middle school students on Saturday night. They each carved a pumpkin and then enjoyed a bonfire out back. While they were carving, Jess talked to them about the importance of the words on our coins & currency- In God We Trust. Nice job Jess for tying in a Christian discussion with a fun hands on activity. Thank you for joining us for Mass today. Have a great week.
