Includes lasagna, salad, bread, dessert & beverage. Annual Holiday Pie Sale - Sat & Sun, 11/23 & 24 after each Mass. We make the pies on Friday for sale over the weekend. Sign-up in the vestibule to purchase your homemade pie for the holiday. Also sign-up to help in the kitchen on Friday, 11/22; peel, roll, bake, wash-up; any & all help gratefully received. Accepting donations of ingredients: flour, sugar, shortening, oil, pie filling, etc. It has been a bountiful year for apples; if you have any left on your trees at home may we prevail upon you to share some with us? I ll be contributing Northern Spy, anyone else? Other baked good donations to the sale are welcome, all proceeds will benefit the IC Youth. Parish Thanksgiving Dinner Immaculate Conception Parish volunteers & their families are invited to a dinner to thank you for contributing your time & talent to this parish. Sunday, November 24, join us in the Parish Hall for Chicken Cacciatore, Pulled Pork, pasta, vegetables, salad, bread, dessert & beverages. Cascun Family Farm is providing & preparing the meats. We are asking parishioners to bring dessert to share. Please sign-up in the vestibule by 11/17 if you plan on attending. There is also a sign-up sheet there for desserts. Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, NY Community Interest November 3, 2013 St. Joseph s Mass Schedule: Saturday Vigil: 5:45 pm, Sunday: 8:45 am. Volunteer Opportunities Greene Food Pantry The first weekend of each month we take up a collection of non-perishable foods for our local food pantry. May & November we cover the hours at the Pantry. Meals On Wheels ICC covers deliveries for August & February: Mon, Wed, Fri, 11:15am. Our Brother s Keeper We take donations of CLEAN blankets, quilts, sheets, towels, batting & fiber fill. They just recently requested donations of yarn. Please bag the items for pick-up. Call Rita St. Pauly Textile has a collection shed in the East corner of our parking lot. Donate your unwanted clothes & fabric items & ICC receives 5 cents per pound collected. A Parish Family looks out for one another and cares for one another. We are revitalizing our Hospitality Committee to keep in contact with our elderly parishioners. Currently we are compiling a list those parishioners who don t get out much but would like to feel a part of our parish family. You can help in 2 ways: #1 Call the church office and give us a name of someone you know who would like to be the recipient of a call or letter on a regular basis. #2 Call the church office and let us know that you would like to be apart of this outreach group. It would involve taking turns each month to call or send a note to an elderly parishioner. Please give this important ministry some prayer. Thank you! St. Marianne Cope Any Married Popes? A book we are discussing refers to the fact that some popes have been married, but doesn t go into detail. Is this true? Have we had married popes? Of course we have had married popes, beginning with St. Peter, though we don t hear anything about his wife after the references to her mother in the Gospels (Mark 1:30). The same is true with other popes. Records are sparse, so we know little about their married life. We do know that one married pope, St. Hormisdas ( ), was the father of another pope who is honored as a saint, St. Silverius ( ). The last married pope was Adrian II ( ). At least for a while after being named pope, he apparently lived with his wife at the Lateran Palace in Rome, even though an unmarried clergy was by this time common in the Western Church. Fr. John J. Dietzen, Catholic Q & A The Love of Divine Truth Jesus replied: Yes, I am a king. I was born for this, I came into the world for this: to bear witness to the truth; and all who are on the side of the truth, listen to my voice. (Jn 18:37-38) The first condition for those who are seeking God s will is simple but not popular - love truth. Almost everyone assumes they possess this trait, but the evidence is overwhelming that most really love their preferences and pleasures, their own agenda. This is why only a small minority seriously work & study to find religious & moral truth. I am impressed with how passionately & beautifully Scripture teaches us to love & pursue truth & wisdom. The sage, for example, says that we are to court wisdom with all our soul, search out for her, track her down, clung to her, & never let her go...the Master himself has promised that those who seek & search, find. Truth is opened to them. Those who want light - really want it - attain light. We need to recall that truth is the conformity of the mind with reality, with the way things actually are. It is not conforming with what is in or fashionable. Wanting truth is not mere wishing or admiring. Loving truth is embracing reality with determination. To will truth is not simply to like it, but to cling to it, to suffer & sacrifice for it, which is what has always motivated the martyrs. Fr. Thomas Dubah, S. M. Lori Zabadal-Dayton, a member of Holy Trinity Parish, has written a musical called Christ the King RESURRECTED, an intriguing story about Christ s resurrection. A reading of Act I will take place on November 9 at 6:30 pm inside The Church of the Holy Trinity. The performance is for all ages and would make for an entertaining family evening. The unique experience of this reading will give audience members the opportunity to offer feedback to Lori, helping her to bring the most powerful form of her work to the stage in the near future. Lori is dedicating the reading in memory of her congregation s recently deceased pastor, Father George Sandor. 6 Prayer of St. Augustine God of our Life, there are days when our burdens we carry chafe our shoulders and weigh us down; when the road seems dreary and endless, the skies grey and threatening; when our lives have no music in them, and our hearts are lonely, and our souls have lost their courage. Flood our path with light, turn our eyes to where the skies are full of promise; tune our hearts to brave music; give us the sense of comradeship with heroes and saints of every age; and so quicken our spirits that we may be able to encourage the souls of all who journey with us on the road of life, to your honor and glory. Amen. Are You Being Called to Serve the Church as a Commissioned Lay Minister? The Formation for Ministry Program in our diocese prepares individuals to exercise their Baptismal commitment to serve as commissioned lay ministers. This exciting program offers courses, workshops, retreats and supervised field experience which prepare persons to serve as a commissioned lay ministers in a wide variety of ministries. Courses are six weeks long and are offered five times a year throughout the Diocese. For more inf. contact Fr. or (315) /8 Youth Rally, Syr. 6-8 gr. Youth Parish Community Project will be to assemble & deliver baskets to our elderly/shut-in parishioners for Thanksgiving. Please consider donating items they could include: baked goods, preserves, fruit, prayer cards, stationary/stamps, items of comfort to brighten their day. Bring the items to the Parish Hall, labeled for the project. They will gather in the Parish Hall to assemble the baskets & make deliveries, then return here for pizza & Bingo! Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page Three Dear friends, Each October, the Diocese asks all the parishes to count attendance at each weekend mass. I thought everyone would be interested in knowing what our parish numbers were. The average attendance for the Sat. 4 p.m. Vigil was 62 and the average attendance for Sunday 10:15 was 114. Weathermaster Construction Co. is hard at work repairing the roof. When they are finished a complete report will be given at both weekend masses. Last weeks youth mass was a great celebration! Thank you Lorraine Detweiler for helping coordinate the 6-8 th grade youth with their participation. Barbara Furman was the greeter. Derrick Heisler read the announcements. Sophia Brown helped Mrs. Hendershott with the lector readings. Dylan Furman, Conner Grant and Liam Flannigan helped Zach Urda with the altar serving. Nate Erickson, Matt Paske, Dustin Markham, Jebediah Trepa, Joshua Trepa, Jon -Jacob Trepa, Jason Hill and Grace Wentlent, Nathan Barry helped with the offertory and bringing up the gifts. Jessica Unkel designed the program cover. They all joined in on the Chime Song for the communion meditation. Retired Priest Father Buckley joined us as the celebrant. He and I discussed the youth mass during the week and he thought it was a great idea to bring a letter written to all the youth encouraging them to be disciples in the world. In it he shared some stories of his younger days and the thoughtful and caring nuns who inspired him. The 6-8 th grade parents brought a nice assortment of baked items for the coffee hour which was enjoyed by a large group of friends and family. Thank you to all the parents who made the effort to bring their child to mass to participate in our parish. That s what it s all about! Coming together each week to give praise to our God, receive Jesus spiritually in Holy Communion, and encourage each other as we journey through life. Building relationships with our friends and our parish family, one step at a time.
