5 March 20, 2016 Father s Notes Hearing And Acting on God s Word He said to them in reply, My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it. Luke 8:21 Christian prayer and especially contemplative prayer must be rooted in the Word of God as proclaimed in the liturgy and as read and studied on our own. Scripture and liturgy are the guardians of our Christian pilgrimage through life and the guarantors of the Christian character of our prayer. To pray contemplatively I mist foster a sense of awareness and attention so that I may eventually develop the contemplative prayer that John of the Cross called the practice of loving attentiveness to God. To do this I must develop the habit of listening in every aspect of my life so that I may listen more attentively for God s presence. I need also to develop the habit of regular, daily times for prayer; otherwise the clutter of modern life soon makes short work of my good intentions. Such a habit will remind me that contemplative meditation is the stillpoint around which one integrates the rest of one s life so that, no matter what anxieties assault me, I know in faith that God is the center of my existence. Keith J. Egan in Handbook of Spirituality for Ministers Seize The Hope Set Before Us We earnestly desire each of you to demonstrate the same eagerness for the fulfillment of hope Hebrews 6:11 Two decades ago, when the disease of alcoholism had me by the throat, I felt both helpless and hopeless. I was hopeless because I thought I could stop drinking on my own, but I failed again and again. The first gift that Alcoholics Anonymous gave me was hope. If they could get sober, so could I. Moreover, they taught me to place my hope not in myself, but in a Power greater than ourselves who, if sought, could and would help us. We often mistakenly assume we need to muster up enough virtue, enough hope - or faith or love - to deserve God s help. But we don t. Instead, we need to ask God s help in everything, including that our hope may be strengthened, our hope for ourselves, for others, for this desperate world of ours. And we need to encourage one another to, in the words of AA, seize the hope set before us in the steadfast promises of God. Anonymous Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 3 Date of Easter The dates for Lent & Easter change all the time. Who determines when these feasts will be celebrated each year? Though there is some divergence in parts of the Christian world, our celebration of Easter is on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the vernal equinox. The vernal equinox, which we ordinarily refer to as the first day of spring, is on or about March 21. The dates of Lent, Ascension & Pentecost are determined by counting backward or forward from the date of Easter. A Healthy Body/Healthy Soul 51 Healthy Foods You Can Say Yes To, cont Tufts University Health & Nutrition Newsletter 35. Salmon - The classic example of fish with hearthealthy omega-3 fatty acids, salmon can be broiled, baked or grilled to make a main dish. Keep in mind, however, that even fat that's good for you comes with a caloric price tag in a three-ounce serving of farmed salmon, 120 for the same portion of wild Atlantic salmon. If you occasionally opt for canned salmon with the bones, you'll also get calcium in the bargain. 36. Sardines - Another fatty fish that's rich in omega- 3s, sardines are also a good source of vitamin D and (eaten with the bones) calcium. Wisdom From Our Catholic Tradition We do not consume the Eucharistic bread and wine as if it were ordinary food and drink; for we have been taught that as Jesus Christ our Savior became a man of flesh and blood by the power of the Word of God, so also the food that our flesh and blood assimilates for its nourishment becomes the flesh and blood of the incarnate Jesus by the power of His own words contained in the prayer of thanksgiving. First Apology in Defense of the Christians, St. Justin Martyr, Rome, 160 AD A Lenten Prayer O Merciful God, take away from my heart all selfpride & boasting, all desire to excuse myself for my sins or my wish to blame others for my faults. Rather, let me take as my example and guide Him who chose to be crowned with thorns and die for us all, your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen Patricia Newland

Alleluia!! Fr. Robert Jones Religious Education Kathy Nichols, Coordinator Sundays 8:45-10:00 am Class - March 20 Youth Mass, March 20, Palm Sunday. No Class March 27, Easter Sunday - Egg Hunt after Mass! Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 4 Dear friends, Last Sunday the events that occurred before Mass reminded me why we are called a parish family. I walked into the Sacristy before Mass & there were 4 newly trained girl altar servers there to get their robes on. The 3 boys on the schedule were there as well & 8 th grader Conner Grant was busy trying to coordinate the group into a workable scenario. A few adults were there preparing their part in the Mass, the Sacristan was there making sure all was ready, & Father Zandy, (like a jovial grandfather) was sitting in the arm chair with a big smile on his face. I asked him if it was okay for the girls to shadow the boys that day and he joyfully said Sure it is. The more the merrier!! You should have heard the chatter as they found their robes. Conner did a great job helping these younger servers. Thank you Conner! You may have noticed this week that some work was done on the outside of the church. Msgr. Putano gave us approval to have the drainage pipes buried and then extended out to a dry well in the back of the property. This will keep the water from wearing away the soil by the building. And it also prepares the area for the new garden! Under the stained glass windows we will be creating a Marian Memorial Garden. There is a display in the vestibule for everyone to see. This will be your garden to use whenever you like! Not only will we plant the left over Easter flower bulbs given in memory of a loved one, but there will also be four stations for praying the rosary. There will be opportunities soon for folks to make a donation to help purchase the needed items in memory of a loved one. There will be benches, wooden arbors for the rosary stations, a small Marian statue, and brick pavers around the sides, a firm walking surface and additional annuals. You will be able to sit and enjoy the scenery, pray the rosary or just take a moment to remember those people who mean so much to us, but have gone to their heavenly home. Please know how important you are to our parish family. Peace! ~Mary Wentlent iccgreene.wordpress.com - Don t forget to check out our website to access the bulletin and the schedule of upcoming events
