This pool will run similar to the Football Pool, except that the two numbers you will be assigned, will remain yours throughout all of the games being played. This gives you more chances to win. The pay out is: 1st round- $20 each 2nd-4th rounds- $30 each 5th round-$50 each Final Championship Game-$100 There is a sign up in the vestibule and you can also contact John Carlin or Chris Wentlent to sign up. The squares cost $25 each. Thank you for supporting this winter fundraiser. Youth Group, Grades 6 & 7, will meet Monday, March 6, 5-6 pm in the Social Hall. The Dad and Me Event has been postponed until June. 9th Annual Men s Ignite Conference Saturday, March 25 at the SRC Arena in Syracuse. Registration information is posted in the vestibule. Food Drive in partnership/competition with Greene Area Churches we will be collecting nonperishable food items to supply the GAC Food Pantry. The first church to fill a 30 gallon trash can wins chocolates! Roots & Wings, (Chen. Co. Catholic Charities) During Lent, as part of their preparation for Easter, our CCD students are collecting personal care supplies (toilet tissue, toiletries, feminine products, etc., items not available with food stamps) Please consider picking up an additional item on your next shopping trip to contribute to our children s project. This drive will continue through Lent. There are collection boxes in the vestibule and each classroom. Volunteer Opportunities Greene Food Pantry - We collect non-perishable foods for our local food pantry. May & November we cover the hours at the Pantry. Meals On Wheels Our volunteers make the deliveries for August & February: Mon, Wed, Fri, 11:15am. Call the Parish Office to join our team! Bottle & Can Drive - drop off your refundable items n the bin next to the Rectory garage. St. Pauly Textile collection shed in our parking lot. Donate your unwanted clothes & fabric items & ICC receives 4 cents per pound collected. Buildings and Grounds News: You may have heard the news that we would like to replace our entrance sign out front. The current sign is 36 years old and the brick base has been repaired twice in the past 3 years. We have two quotes from different sign companies and there are pictures in the hall on a display. We are using funds from our winter fundraisers as well as our savings for this project. All are invited to the hall after the Sunday Mass and give an opinion about the new sign for out front. We have pictures and prices and would like your input before making our decision. There is also a discussion going on among the building and grounds members about expanding our vestibule. If you are on this team, make sure you check out the display. We again welcome ideas and suggestions for this project. The display in the hall is only the preliminary ideas for this expansion. Would you like to help with the Memorial Garden this summer? We are having a planning meeting for the garden flower planting as well as the spring flower sale that will benefit our garden. This special meeting is Thursday March 16, at 11:15, immediately following the morning Bible study. Stations of the Cross and Weekday Lenten Mass Beginning March 8!! If a person has to keep the Ten Commandments to get to heaven, why did Jesus Christ die on the cross and shed His blood fur us? Romans 3:24 says we are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. Isn t it by the blood of the Lord, & not by the observance of the law, that we are forgiven our sins & have eternal life? You re right. We do not keep the law of God and Jesus Christ in order to buy God s love and our sharing in His life. These are free, unmerited gifts. Jesus does tell us, however, what we must do because we are His disciples, part of His family. Several times He corrected His followers when they tried to act, or even prompt Him to act, against that lifestyle. See, for example, Matthew 7:21, 19:17 and Chapter 25, and John 9:21.) In other words, there are certain ways we Christians do things, Jesus tells us we must live our lives according to that way or we just won t fit into the kingdom. Fr. John J. Matthew 4:4 Satan has challenged Jesus to change the desert stones into bread. After fasting forty days, Jesus is certainly hungry. He replies with this passage written in Deuteronomy 8:3 about the Israelites time in the desert. We all have desert times that test us, strain our courage, wear down our hope. We are hungry for safety and gladness and peace. Jesus reply directs us to the nourishment of God s words. It has made a big difference for me to pay attention and copy verses of Scripture that give me life. The last words Jesus heard before he was led into the desert in Matthew s Gospel were God s saying: This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased. Lent can be a listening time for Scripture passages that speak to our own hungers and deepen our trust that we are beloved. Dear God, help me hear your words of love this Lent. 6 Religious Instruction Sundays; 9:00-10:00 am gr. 1-7 T Go f A Ae 1st Sunday in Lent, March 5, 2017 Sunday Readings: Genesis 2.7-9; 3.1-7; Romans ; Matthew REFLECTION Jesus makes three choices in this Gospel. He could choose to turn stones to bread, or become ruler of the world, or jump off the top of the Temple and have angels catch him. But Jesus chooses not to be a magical, superhero Messiah. Jesus comes to be one of us, our brother. Jesus makes choices just as we must. Jesus chooses to follow God s word. Bread is not the only food we need. We also need the word of God to nourish our spirits. Jesus could seek power but he chooses to worship God and calls us to do the same. Jesus shows us how God acts as a human being. Lent is a time to practice loving actions, such as sharing, forgiving, including, and thanking Question from Life: What have you learned from experience about discerning good from evil? Question from the Gospel: What words of God do you trust? Parents and Grandparents, try using this information as a basis for discussion at home. The Prayer Chain at our parish has a new contact person. Please call Joan Trepa, , if you know of someone who could use a special prayer. She will give the name to Audrée in the church office to be added to the bulletin. She will also send the request down the chain to those who would like to offer up prayers for them throughout the day. If you would like to be on the prayer chain, contact Joan or the church office. There is always room for more people on the prayer chain. The Adult Bible Study The sessions for this week are: Sunday March. 5- both 8:30 and 9:05 a.m. classes - Session 2, Genesis 1-11 Thursday March 9-10:00 am- Session 3, Genesis Sunday March 5 4:00 pm - Session 1. This study follows the Confirmation Class Schedule. The dates are: March 5, 12, April 2, 23,30, May 7, 14,21. Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 4 Dear friends, Did you know this parish is supported by pillars? I m not speaking of literal but spiritual support. These pillars are our senior parish members! A pillar is something that supports a structure and this is the best description I can think of. Our parish has senior members that are prayer warriors. They pray every day for families, young people, the unborn, those in the hospital, those with an illness, specific friends and family and also those they don t even know! When they are done asking God for strength, guidance and wisdom, they turn to the Blessed Mother and ask for her intercession in heaven. Some of their favorite prayers are the Regina Caeli, The Angelus, The Memorare, The Magnificat and the Hail Mary. And they pray every day!! Isn t it comforting to know someone is praying for you? Even on your darkest day there is a prayer warrior lifting up your burdens to God. These prayer warriors didn t get where they are by hiding under the covers either! They have been there and done that! They have been in the trenches themselves, raising children, juggling work and home life, experiencing great joys and also great sadness. Our prayer warriors are who they are, because they have a relationship with God, and trust him. They have worked on their relationship throughout their life, always recognizing that God is in charge, not them. They all have a deep reverence for the Lord. One said even as a little girl she would just talk to God about her day and she felt in her heart God was listening. They know when things don t turn out like they want, they just need to be patient; God is working on it! You prayer warriors know who you are; I don t need to give names. You are visible in our church helping in so many ways, and we thank you. Thank you for sharing your stories with me and being a role model for all of us. We are blessed to have you, our pillars that hold us up! Make sure you greet our new families with a handshake!
