1 CHURCH OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION We at Immaculate Conception are a group of people bound together by our belief in Jesus Christ as our Savior. When we were baptized, we were called to share in His work. Therefore we pledge ourselves to build a community where all are welcomed, loved, needed and appreciated. Armed with the faith in the Immaculate Conception of Mary, we will celebrate the gift of life together in word and sacrament. Here we unite in worship, proclaim Your word, celebrate the Eucharist, and are sent forth to share Your love and make disciples. Lord, we take your Great Commission seriously and long for our parish to be so on-fire that we draw people to You. Help us in that endeavor, as we strive to work together-ordained, religious and laity. Please make our parish amazing, through Your power and Your grace. Amen.

The aim is that these young people who graduate from high school will be able to get jobs and use their wages to feed, clothe and educate their younger siblings in their parentless families. In 2016 the U.N. rated Malawi to be the poorest country in the world a sobering assessment. Built on a largely agrarian economy, most people in Malawi eke out an existence as subsistence farmers earning less than a dollar a day. The AIDS crisis, which began in the 1980s, has compounded Malawi s economic distress. Today, in a country of 17 million, there are more than 1.2 million AIDS orphans one in every three children. In Malawi one must pay to attend high school. On average a student must pay $30 per term, or $90 for the full year. These brave students will have a new responsibility as the breadwinners in orphan headed households. Thank You for whatever you can do to assist them. We extend our sympathy to......sutton family on the loss of their loved one Adrian Sutton, We pray for the happy repose of her soul. May she find a new life with God in heaven.

6 September 2, 2018 Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 3 Dear friends, During the month of August, 35 families participated in the Immigration Awareness Project. They dropped slips in the flag box with the names of the countries their families immigrated from. We did this to bring awareness to the fact that each of us has ancestors from other countries that immigrated to America. In a small way we pay homage to their struggles and accomplishments, that made us who we are today. I hope this encouraged some family stories shared with friends and the younger generation. I cherish the stories of my ancestors that came over from Ireland. One is a love story of James Joseph O Neil and Mollie Reid meeting on the boat. Historians tell of the deplorable conditions of those boat voyages, and I know it couldn t have been very romantic, but however it actually happened, I am thankful! Our parish ancestors came from 20 different countries, and a flag representing that country is on display in the church. Bishop Cunningham encourages us to welcome the stranger and reach out in Christian love to those who have had to leave their native land in order to enjoy safety and security. Maybe they escaped war and terrorism or extreme poverty. One thing is for sure, they came to have a better life for themselves and their family. This weekend we celebrate Labor Day which began in 1894 as a way to honor the American Worker. Being an immigrant in those days was hard, just as being an immigrant today. Take a moment to offer a prayer of thanks to a loving God that guided our ancestors on their journey. Thank you for worshipping at ICC today. Peace!~Mary Wentlent A Bequest in Your Will, no matter what the amount, can help the parish continue its mission of spreading the fullness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the Church He founded & serving God s people. Religious Education for children and youth will begin on Sunday, September 23. Parents and Grandparents can register their child after the weekend Masses beginning September 1, in the social hall. The registration sheets will be available on our website. There will be a mandatory parent meeting on Sunday, September 16 from 9:45-10:00 in the church hall. Craft projects will be available for the Children, under the pavilion, beginning at 9:30 Confirmation Teacher, Chris Wentlent cwentlent@gmail.com. The first service project for our Confirmation students will be working the Hotdog tent at the Greene Labor Day Picnic. The shift is from 11:30-2:30. All youth and a parent are welcome to help. Please sign up in the vestibule or contact Mr. Wentlent. Our religious education program for children and youth will have a new component this year. Once a month, the class will focus on a service project. Depending on the age and ability of the children, these service projects will include: *letter writing to senior members of the church *offering to help a senior church member with leaf racking, toting items to the thrift store, or even putting up a small tree with decorations at Christmas time. *visiting the residents of the Veterans Home in Oxford. Maybe you know someone that would like to come in and visit a classroom and tell about an adventure in their life. We are looking for individuals who can help our young people learn to be a disciple of Jesus Christ while helping others. Please contact the church office. Mary Wentlent or Gloria Straniero will get back in touch with you. Thank you! Adult Faith Studies will begin Sunday, September 23 from 8:30-9:30. We will meet in the church in the choir area. (No singing required!) This 8-week study is on the life of Mary, Mother of God. There is no fee to participate in this study. Please sign up in the vestibule.
