Our Confirmation Class is volunteering at the Hot Dog Stand 11:30-2:30. Our shift at the BBQ Chicken Tent is the first, bright & early, 8-10:30am. Sign-up in the vestibule or stop by the tent & see if we need any more help. There are also opportunities to help on Saturday at the High School with food prep. Father James Kagunya of Kenya celebrated Mass with us last Sunday, August 13. If anyone would like to make a special donation to his ministry with the poor in Kenya, please put your check or cash in an envelope marked Father James and we will make sure it gets to him. 3 August 20, 2017 Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, NY Page 5 Confirmation Class News: Reminder: All Confirmation Students are invited to go with the class for an overnight trip to the Larkins Lake House in the Adirondacks Mountains on Saturday August 26, returning on Sunday, August 27. Please contact the teacher, Chris Wentlent if your youth is going and if you have any questions. All Confirmation Students should plan to help work the Hot Dog Tent at the Greene Labor Day Festival on Monday September 4. Our shift is from 11:30-2:30. If you cannot make this you must let Mr. Wentlent know asap. The 4th Annual Fall Ladies Luncheon and Fashion Show will take place on Sunday, September 17 from 11:30-1:00, immediately following Mass. All ladies of the parish and their family and friends are welcome. This year s theme is Happy Days. The luncheon will feature a vegan/gluten free option and the meal will be serenaded by Annie Simpson and her musical friend Curt with some folk music classics. Following the meal, all will be entertained by a fashion show of 70 s sitcoms and trivia, modeled by some of the youth of the parish and their friends. Tickets for the luncheon cost only $9. If you would like to join us on Sunday September 17, please sign up in the vestibule and we will have a table leader contact you. If you would like to donate a raffle basket you can sign -up for that as well. Around the Southern Tier Knights of Columbus Summer Cookout Fundraiser The Knights of Columbus will be hosting an old fashioned summer cookout on Friday, August 25, 5-9 pm at the Council Hall located at 136 Park Avenue, Bing. Sausage/pepper/onions, hotdogs, hamburgers, and macaroni salad. There will be a cash bar featuring $2 cans of beer. All proceeds go to our wheelchair fund. 5 August 20, 2017 Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 3 Religious Instruction Registration for Children/Youth grades K-10 at ICC August 26/27 and September 2/3 following Mass All Classes will begin on Sunday, September 10 You can also download a registration form from our website and send it in to the parish office. We are looking for 2 new teachers for our CCD program. We are using a teaching friendly curriculum that follows the liturgical calendar, which means the readings heard in Mass are part of the weekly lesson! Our classes will meet on Sunday mornings from 9-10:00 am. If you would like to join this ministry please contact one of the DRE s or Mary Wentlent. Catechist Meeting All those interested in being part of the CCD team this year are requested to attend a short meeting on Sunday, August 27 from 4:30-5:00. Following this meeting will be a workshop presented by Andrea Schaeffer called Heart of the Catechist, from 5-8:00. This is a great way to start the fall preparing ourselves for the ministry of teaching religious education to our children. Sunday Nursery We would like to begin offering a nursery during the Sunday Mass beginning in September. The purpose of the nursery is to allow our young families the opportunity to have their baby or toddler supervised in a loving and calm environment while the parents attend Mass. We are looking for a few individuals to help run the nursery. This can be the same two people each week or a rotation of individuals. This is a paid position, and funds will be coming from the McDevitt Grant that we received this year. Anyone interested in this position should contact the church office and speak with Parish Manager Mary Wentlent. Completion of the VIRTUES Safe Environment Class will be required. How can there be too many children? That is like saying there are too many flowers. St. Teresa of Kolkata Dear friends, I had an interesting conversation with a young adult recently. She said she felt God wasn t listening to her prayers, because things were happening so differently than she expected. As I listened to her frustration, I thought of many conversations I ve had with my senior friends here at ICC. We jokingly call them prayer warriors. They know the power of prayer, and pray daily for people, our parish, our country and the world. They also know that sometimes God doesn t answer our prayers the way we expect. Sometimes he says OK and sometimes he says not right now! I had such empathy for this young adult who was struggling with understanding her journey in life. I think we should pray for young adults to be patient and not lose hope; to look at the bigger picture and see that things take time; to see that sometimes it takes years for prayers to be answered. I was reminded of the Sight n Sound show this summer where Jonah hadn t heard from God in many years, and when he finally did, he didn t like the way his prayer was answered! I guess we do that too, don t we? Best of luck with those conversations you may have with young adults. I tried to do more listening than talking! Have you noticed how awesome our new altar servers are doing! Last week Jaden E. was patient and kind with his little brother Jacob who was shadowing him. It was inspiring to watch. Zabelle S. was brave when altar serving for the Holy Day Mass, and was thankful for the assistance from Mr. Norton. Andrew has teamed up with his big brother Nate and is doing a really nice job. Macie seems to enjoy serving with her big brothers, because her beautiful smile gives her away. Arie K. has shadowed a few older servers and takes this task very seriously, as he concentrates so carefully. Another young person, Adreana R. has been getting some community service hours in for Junior Honor Society by helping Edilu Hunt with cleaning and preparing our CCD classrooms. She is another new server and will be on the new schedule when it comes out next month. Thank you parents for helping these young people realize the importance of helping at our parish.
