When we were baptized, we were called to share in His work. Therefore we pledge ourselves to build a community where all are welcomed, loved, needed and appreciated. 3 January 17, 2016 On Sunday afternoon, January 17, 3-6 pm, our parish will be hosting a D.I.Y. event with Dad in the parish hall. Projects for all age levels will be available. There will be pizza, wings, chili, snacks and refreshments for all to enjoy while Dads and their kids make a fun craft together. Sign-up in the vestibule or contact Kelly Circle of Friends Card Party Wednesday, January 27 from 10:30-12:30. All are welcome join us for a fun morning. Feel free to bring a snack or light lunch item to share. ICC Super Bowl XLX Football Pool-$25 per chance. The first 100 people will be eligible to participate!!. Payout is $250 for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd quarter winners and $500 for the final score. Contact Mary Wentlent or John Carlin if you want to buy a square or have any questions. Anyone who is celebrating their 25th or 50th wedding anniversary in the year 2016 is invited to attend the special Mass at the Cathedral. Please contact the church office for more information on attending this Mass in Syracuse. We will be observing World Marriage Day at our parish on the weekend of February 13/14. Father Lupa will be inviting all couples to come forward for a special blessing at both weekend Masses. We will have a reception after Mass on Sunday and married couples are invited to bring their wedding pictures to share with your parish friends at the reception. May & November we cover the hours at the Pantry. Meals On Wheels Our volunteers make the deliveries for August & February: Mon, Wed, Fri, 11:15am. Our Brother s Keeper We take donations of CLEAN blankets, quilts, sheets, towels, batting & fiber fill. & yarn. Please bag the items. Bottle & Can Drive - drop off your refundable items n the bin next to the Rectory garage. St. Pauly Textile collection shed in our parking lot. The skill was shared with us by My Brothers Keeper' and is a fun way to spend the morning and also help those less fortunate. Everyone is welcome, even bring a friend! 5 January 17, 2016 Father s Notes A Ritual of Daily Prayer Rising very early before dawn, [Jesus] left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed. Mark 1:35 I have a friend who gets up at 6 a.m. every morning & goes for a 5 mile run. He has done this consistently for many years because he believes it is very beneficial for his health. Such good habits for physical well -being have a counterpart in our spiritual health. Jesus had his early morning ritual of prayer to keep in touch with his heavenly Father. He sacrificed some of his sleeping time in order to pray - a clear sign of his deep commitment to prayer. Mark says when Jesus was at his home in Capernaum, the people constantly came to his door for healings. Although he ministered late into the evening, he was still up before dawn to pray. Both the time & location of prayer were important priorities in our Lord s life. He chose the early hour & the deserted place. If Jesus thought it was necessary to set aside prime time for prayer, we should be convinced all the more how vital it is for us. Some rise early each morning to attend daily Mass, others to pray in a quiet place in their home. Whatever the setting of our prayer, we should appreciate how important quiet time alone with God is each day. Fr. James McKarns Returning to sacraments after two abortions I was raised a Catholic & married a Catholic, though he wasn t practicing his faith. My problem is that I had two abortions, which I didn t want, but finally had. I know it was very wrong, so I haven t been able to go to confession or Communion for 25 or 30 years. It s driving me crazy now. What can I do? Abortion is a very serious offense against God & humanity, since it is the taking of a human life. I realize you know this, but I want to emphasize that what I say next is not meant to minimize that fact. The first step to forgiveness is an honest acknowledgment of our sin. I hope you talk with a priest and receive the sacrament of penance soon. One of the strange things about sin is that it frequently seems to diminish in size when we re tempted, & then afterward it looms so huge that we fear even God can t forgive or heal the hurt. In a way, that is an even bigger mistake than the sin itself. God doesn t like the sin & certainly doesn t encourage us to ignore His commands. But He does tell us often in Scripture that He considers the forgiveness Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 3 of sins the greatest of all His works. In other words, He boasts that no sin, no evil, is beyond the reach of His goodness & His mercy. That is a joyous & basic fact of the Christian faith. So, He is there, waiting for you simply to run to Him and tell Him you re back. Read prayerfully the story of the forgiving father in Luke, chapter 15, then go to confession & receive the Holy Eucharist. You ve been away long enough. Catholic Q & A by Fr. John J. 6 Ash Wednesday The Lenten Season begins Wednesday, February 10 with the imposition of Blessed Ashes on our foreheads at all Masses that day. All parishioners are invited to join with our Christian neighbors as we seek to grow in God s grace in this Holy Lenten Season that is upon us. Remember man/woman that you are dust and unto dust you shall return. Immaculate Conception kicks off the Lenten Season in Greene with our Annual Ecumenical Service with Ashes at 12:15 pm on the 10th. After the service we host a soup & salad lunch in the Parish Hall. Mass with Ashes - 5:30 pm. If you would like to help with the meal, with labor or donation of goods, please contact the Parish Office or Edilu Hunt or sign-up in the vestibule. The GAC weekday services schedule for the rest of the season will be posted in the vestibule. All are invited to come celebrate the 90th birthday of Mr. Bob LaRocque on Saturday January 23 following the Saturday 4:00 Mass. Bob is a past president of our Parish Council and is an active member of the Saturday Vigil Mass, usually helping as an usher. He and his lovely wife Theresa will soon be celebrating their 69th wedding anniversary!! Please plan to stop by on Saturday about 5:00 for some light refreshments and help celebrate this extraordinary event! March For Life Washington, D. C. - January 22, 2016 Buses leave on the 21st and return late on the 22nd. The bus out of Oneonta, where individuals stay overnight in a recreation hall, costs $70. Page 4 Dear friends, Winter is here, whether we like it or not!! I think we got spoiled with the beautiful weather we had the last several weeks. Many thanks to the parishioners who signed up to shovel and salt the sidewalks! For those of you, who like to use Facebook, check out our parish s page! Zach Urda has taken on the task of putting up pictures of parish activities. He is doing a fantastic job! Thank you Zach! This young man has gone from altar boy to Eucharistic Minister to helping out with media relations! Those of us traveling down to Binghamton for the Formation for Ministry program are having a great time. The car rides lead to such interesting conversations! The class this session is on Sacraments. Father Galuppi from Our Lady of Good Council is the teacher and he is such an interesting speaker! He covered Baptism last week and talked about all of the Biblical images of water. We can remember the stories of Noah, Moses, Jonah, John the Baptist, Jesus walking on water, and water flowing from Jesus side. Father explained that Jesus walking on water was in a way showing his control over it, and that Jesus baptism with water could be seen as the beginning of his passion. He encouraged us to think about all of this symbolism when we dip our finger in the Holy Water font. It really is fascinating to learn about all of the beautiful history of the Catholic Church. Our class is made up of people just like you and me, who enjoy helping at their church, want to learn more about the Catholic Faith and are willing to accept responsibility for a specific ministry in the Church when the classes are finished. If anyone is interested in learning more about this Diocesan program, you can ask me, Chris, Joe Trepa or Bonnie Norton. We may not have all the answers but we know where to get them!
