When we were baptized, we were called to share in His work. Therefore we pledge ourselves to build a community where all are welcomed, loved, needed and appreciated. This Sunday, June 12 our parish will celebrate our youth who are graduating from high school. The youth will participate in the Mass & afterwards everyone is invited into the church hall for a taco bar graduation party. The seniors that were either baptized &/ or received their First Communion at our parish are: Maria Brown, Katey Carey, Matt Carlin, Marcus Dickerson, Kathleen Hanrahan, Kurt Hendershott, Chris Klecha, Ryan Markham, Emily Montelione, Tyler Unkle and Maggie Weeks. Please honor these graduates by attending this Mass and the reception and offering them congratulations!

3 June 12, 2016 Our parish will have a table at the Greene Craft Show this summer on Saturday, July 23. We need donated items that are hand made to sell at our table. There is a planning meeting, Thursday, June 9 at 4 pm for all who are interested in helping plan this fundraiser. We need items ahead of time and people to help price things, set up the booth, take a shift selling on the day of the craft show, and clean up afterwards. Please consider donating a little time for this 'fun' fundraiser! Family - you love them but sometimes you can't stand them, be they spouse, teenager, sibling... Come to a discussion of "A Christian Approach to Family Problems". This informal group will meet on Tuesday, June 14 at 7 pm in the social hall. Happy Birthday All are welcome to stay after Mass on Saturday, June 18 to help Theresa LaRocque celebrate her 92nd Birthday!! A fun reception is planned for this charming member of our parish. Please plan to stay after Mass or stop by at 5:00 in the church hall. We are proud to announce that Derick Heisler and Kathleen Hanrahan received the Celebrate Youth Award last Sunday. Out Administrator Msgr. John Putano holds this yearly event to recognize youth in the Southern Tier Catholic Churches who show positive leadership in their local parish. Kathleen has taught the 2nd grade First Communion class for two years and Derick has been an altar server for many years and currently is on the lector team. The Circle of Friends is hosting an outing to Regal Cinema on Tuesday June 21 to see the new Pixar movie "Finding Dorey". This adorable film is the sequel to Finding Nemo. The friendly-but-forgetful blue tang fish reunites with her loved ones, and everyone learns a few things about the real meaning of family along the way. We will go for lunch to the Cracker Barrel afterwards. Please sign up in the vestibule if you are interested and we will coordinate a carpool. Please leave your donation in the basket in the Parish Hall vestibule. May & November we cover the hours at the Pantry. We need another team member to cover the Tuesday hours in May & November. Please contact the Parish Office if you can help. Meals On Wheels Our volunteers make the deliveries for August & February: Mon, Wed, Fri, 11:15am. Call the Parish Office to join our team! Our Brother s Keeper We take donations of CLEAN blankets, quilts, sheets, towels, batting & fiber fill. & yarn. Please bag the items. Our next sleeping bag workshop will be this summer. Bottle & Can Drive - drop off your refundable items n the bin next to the Rectory garage. St. Pauly Textile collection shed in our parking lot. Donate your unwanted clothes & fabric items & ICC receives 2 cents per pound collected. Holy Hour for Vocations - Friday, June 17 from 7-8 pm at St. Patrick, Binghamton. Refreshments and food will be available beginning at 5 pm at St. Patrick's Rectory. Sight & Sound Samson Tickets are $35 person, $25 per child under 12. This price includes: round trip bus fare, tickets to the show, lunch buffet. We leave the church parking lot at 6:00 am on the 19th. Drop your check or cash payment off at the Parish Office, place it in the collection basket., etc. Receipt of payment reserves your place. Saint Bartholomew's Church is selling fresh Krispy Kreme donuts Saturday, July 9 th during Gus Maker. The sale will take place at 9 am in front of McLaughlin's Department store. Preorder by calling Anna McLaughlin at , Fran Nial at or stop in to the parish office during regular business hours. 1 dozen glazed donuts for $7.50. Pre-orders will only be held if paid in advance. We have 100 dozen arriving and we will be selling until gone! 5 June 12, 2016 Father s Notes Catholic and Muslim Unity Recently I heard the Nation of Islam leader speak. I became impressed with what he said, and even more with his closing prayer, quoting Jesus, and saying nothing belittling to Christians or Jews. I know nothing about this religion, but can see why many African-Americans have joined. What would prevent Catholics and Muslims from uniting? Some sort of peaceful relationship between the Catholic Church & Islam would indeed be a great achievement. Catholics, about billion, constitute the largest single religious denomination in the world; Muslims run a close second, about billion. They are the only religious groups with over 1 billion members world wide. It s no wonder that everyone from the pope on down, on the Catholic side at least, looks with hope on any sign of dialogue between the two faiths. I m afraid, however, that any stable, effective religious collaboration or union between the Catholic Church and Islam is more difficult than might sometimes appear. Many points of similarity do exist. With Judaism & Christianity, Islam is one of the three great monotheistic religions in the world, all in one way or another looking to Abraham as the founder of their faith. The Muslim creed is simple: There is no God but Allah, & Mohammed is his prophet. Each day devout Muslims recite often the prayer Allahu Akbar, God is the most great. All three of these faiths look to Jerusalem as the spiritual focus of their religion. The second most sacred mosque of Islam is the Dome of the Rock, built on the site of Solomon s temple in Jerusalem, where, it is traditionally believed, Abraham intended to sacrifice Isaac, where Jesus walked & taught, & where (according to Muslim tradition) Mohammed ascended into heaven in 632 AD. Frequent prayer, generous & personal care of the poor, fasting & belief in one God are pillars of Islamic faith. Officially at least, economic justice, equal dignity for women far beyond what is acceptable in the surrounding male-dominated cultures & racial equality are among the demands Mohammed made on believers. The insistence on racial equality, incidentally, is one reason mainstream Islam ever today rejects the Black Muslim movement for its discrimination and segregation. The obstacles to effective dialogue are many. For Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 3 one, Muslims reject belief in the Trinity, and thus many other core Christian doctrines, the divinity of Jesus Christ among them. Nevertheless, God s plan for salvation includes all who acknowledge the Creator, says the Catechism of the Catholic Church, in the first place among whom are the Muslims... Together with us, they adore the one merciful God, mankind s judge on the last day. (No. 841, quoting the Vatican Constitution on the Church, 16.) 6 Sunday Bible Study for Adults - The Prophets! June 12-session 9, Haggai & Malachi June 19-session 10, New Testament and Modern Prophets Congratulations to Bonnie Norton and John & Joyce Lawrence from St. Agnes in Afton for completing the Great Adventure Bible Study! Save the Date- Vacation Bible School will be the week of July from 6-8:15. We will once again join up with the village churches of Greene. for a joint summer experience for our community s children. This years theme is 'Workshop of Wonders' and will feature games, songs, crafts and learning about Jesus Miracles and how to imagine and build with God. There is a planning meeting on Monday, June 13 at 6 pm at the Congregational Church. Please call the church office if you are interested in participating. Catholic Communication Campaign - This weekend s second collection. This collection communicates the Gospel through Catholic social media activities and enriches our faith through social media, television, radio, and print media. Please be generous in this week s collection & support this important work. The CCC is how we share our experience of faith, worship, and witness to the world! There is a job description and short application in the vestibule. Please pray for this ministry. This is a reminder that any individual over the age of 18, including parents, must have completed Safe Environment/VIRTUS training (includes a background check) (valid for five years) before they are permitted to travel or stay overnight on a youth church function. Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 4 Dear friends, I couldn t wait to share with you what we talked about in our Formation for Ministry class. I told you last week that the class title is Spirituality of Leadership and Father Vavonese is a fantastic teacher, even via the live stream WebEx in our social hall. Not only are we discovering Ignatus Loyola who founded the Jesuits with their Spiritual Exercises (more about those next week!), but about taping our own leadership potential. This week we viewed a YouTube talk by Father Michael Himes from Boston College. It s titled Three Questions and it takes you through three very thought provoking and inspiring questions about making life decisions. He explains the difference between Joy and Happiness. He says happiness is affected by many external factors (sleep, illness, hunger, etc.). Joy is more complex. It s defined as the sense of the rightness of the way we live our lives. His three questions we can ask ourselves are: What gives you joy? Does this life decision involve something you are good at? Does anyone need you to do it? He concludes that the central issue in being a human being, and therefore a Christian, is a particular form of love, which is a self-gift a way of giving ourselves away to others. He thinks our deepest fundamental vocation in life is to be as intelligent, as responsible, as free, as courageous, as imaginative and as loving as we can be! I encourage you to check out this YouTube when you can! Well, I hope you were one of the lucky people who had a BBQ dinner prepared by the Knights of Columbus last Sunday. It was so delicious- these men can really cook! And they genuinely enjoy each other s company while working on fundraisers to support young men entering the Priesthood. We are proud of our Knights! Many thanks to the following youth who helped power wash and rake last Saturday at the church: Nate Barry, Conner Grant, Jack Cutia, Grace Wentlent, Barbara Furman and her cousin McKenna.
