The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception For over a century, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception has served as the spiritual center of the Diocese of Syracuse. There is currently a restoration project underway to raise funds to maintain the integrity of this magnificent house. There are many pressing problems to address both inside and out. The most costly repair is the century old roof, that leaks and has caused major damage to interior plaster and stonework as well as the electrical and heating systems. All Catholics throughout the Diocese are asked to serve as guardians of our mother church by making a meaningful gift toward the restoration of our Cathedral. We are being encouraged to consider a pledge that is paid over 3 years, in order to make a manageable monthly amount grow into an even more substantial gift. There is a large poster in the vestibule showing the beautiful stained glass at the front of the Cathedral. We will be showing a short video at Mass on the weekend of Nov 5/6 explaining the work that is needed in the restoration. There will be pledge envelopes available at the Masses in November. While we do not have a specific goal for our parish, we will be accepting donation envelopes in our weekend collections during the month of November and we will mail them from the parish office. We understand that not everyone is able to make a donation, and we ask for your prayers for the success of this campaign. For those that are able, the Diocese is suggesting a donation similar to the Hope Appeal. Flyers are available in the vestibule with more information. The Fatima Statue arrived very well packaged. We have 2 trash bags of packing peanuts available, first come, first served...

5 October 23, 2016 Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 3 Father s Notes Consistent Ethic of Life I have read & heard much about the seamless garment, but no one explains it. Can you tell me what it is? The seamless garment is a another name for what is more frequently called a consistent ethic of life. Both phrases mean that our moral teachings & positions about issues relating to human life should be consistent, & not deny on one issue what we defend on another. In other words, if one human life is sacred, all human life is sacred, & our political & moral position should reflect that consistency. Though the idea is far from new, the specific consistent ethic of life, or seamless garment approach, was proposed by the late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin of Chicago in Since then it has become a major element in every serious moral discussion, from abuse of the aged & sexual exploitation, to war & the death penalty; from economic oppression of the poor & helpless, to reform of health care, & the massive violence committed today against unborn children. The consistent ethic approach has profoundly affected Catholic thinking in all these areas, perhaps most especially on the subject of just war & capital punishment. Cardinal Bernardin pointed to three themes that underlie a consistent ethic of life: The theological assertion that the human person is made in the image and likeness of God, the philosophical affirmation of the dignity of the person, & the political principle that society & the state exist to serve the person. Within this framework, the Catholic bishops of New York contended in their February, 1994 statement against the death penalty that whether one speaks of violent crimes or unplanned pregnancies, death is never the answer. Interestingly, the seamless garment argument has led other groups to embrace the Catholic position on the evil of abortion. Sojourners is a Washington-based group & is the name of their influential magazine devoted to many issues of justice and peace. Some years ago the community abandoned its neutrality on the morality of abortion. The editor explained: Our deepest convictions about poverty, racism, violence & the equality of men & women are finally rooted in a radical concern for life - its absolute value & the need to protect it. It was only a matter of time before the spiritual logic of these other commitments would lead us to a pro-life response to abortion as well. The seamless garment, or consistent ethic of life, idea has immeasurably enriched the discussion of issues relating to respect for the sacredness of human life. It surely will continue to do so as its challenges are increasingly accepted, we hope, both by those who presently claim a pro-life position, by those who do not. Catholic Q & A by Fr. John J. Dietzen Wisdom From Our Catholic Tradition None of us has the right to condemn anyone. Even when we see people doing bad and we don t know why they do it. Jesus invites us not to pass judgment. Maybe we are the ones who have helped make them what they are. We need to realize that they are our brothers and sisters. That leper, that drunkard, and that sick person are our brothers because they too have been created for a greater love. This is something that we should never forget. St. Teresa of Calcutta October is Respect Life Month Our support and promotion of human life must be accomplished through the service of charity...in personal witness, various forms of volunteer work, social activity and political commitment. This is a particularly pressing need at the present time, when the culture of death so forcefully opposes the culture of life. St. John Paul II, from his Encyclical, The Gospel of Life, 1995 Word of Life The dying process is a sacred time a final season to seek closure in this life and prepare for the next in the hope of sharing in Christ s Resurrection. Caring for Loved One s at Life s End. USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities Several people asked for the name of the book I mentioned in last Sunday s homily on perseverance in Prayer, so here it is! New Saint Joseph People s Prayer Book, edited by Rev. Francis Evans, Catholic Book Publishing Co. N.Y Thoughts as the Election Day approaches; Whether this [new government] will prove a blessing or a curse will depend upon the use our people make of the blessings which a gracious God hath bestowed on us. If they are wise, they will be great and happy. If they are of a contrary character; they will be miserable. Righteousness alone can exalt them as a nation [Proverbs 14:34]. Reader! Whoever thou art, remember this, and in thy sphere practice virtue thyself and encourage it in others. Patrick Henry

6 Religious Instruction 9:00-10:10 am Sunday grs. K-7 4:00-5:00 pm Sunday Confirmation NO 4 pm Confirmation Class 10/23 YES 9 am Rel. Ed Class 10/23 The Gospel for All Ages Weekly Discussion Questions: 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time, October 23, 2016 Sunday Readings: Sirach , 16-18; 2 Timothy 4.6-8, 16-18; Luke REFLECTION: God doesn t create people as nobodies and somebodies. God creates all of us as somebodies! All of us are made in God s image and likeness. Like the Pharisees in Sunday s Gospel, we sometimes put others down in order to be somebodies ourselves. We make fun of other people in order to fit in ourselves or to make sure nobody puts us down. The Pharisee in the Gospel looks down on the tax collector. Many people didn t like tax collectors because they worked for the Romans and sometimes cheated people. The Pharisee thinks he is great because he isn t like the tax collector. He isn t dishonest and greedy. He doesn t work with the Romans. He is faithful to all the religious laws. Jesus ends his story by telling us, The tax collector went away right with God. We don t have to put others down to be somebodies to God. Everyone who wants to be popular with God is popular with God. Everybody is in! Question from Life: How do I measure what I or others deserve? Question from the Gospel: How does your prayer insulate you from others? How does prayer connect you with others? Knights of Columbus Harvest Dinner Turkey Dinner. 4:30-6:30 PM Thurs., October 27th, St. Malachy s Church Hall. Price $9.00. Take-Outs available for $10.00 each. Sleeping bags for the Homeless: Our parish will sponsor a sleeping bag workday Saturday November 12 from 9 am-3 pm. If you have come before you know this is a fun day making something that will be used this winter by the needy in our community. Bring a friend or come and make a new one. No sewing skills necessary. We are accepting clean socks, hats and mittens to be rolled up in the bags. Blanket donations will be accepted on Friday Nov. 11 and Saturday morning Nov. 12. We do not have room to store the blanket and accessory donations, so please do not drop them off sooner. Thank you! Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 4 Dear friends, Last week I sat behind a new family at Mass and I was so happy for our parish and where we are. Religious Education classes are full and our new teachers are getting used to their classes and the material. The Sunday morning and Thursday morning Bible Studies have wonderful people who are taking advantage of these studies. They are short but very engaging! This past week in the study of the Gospel of John, the presenter pointed out that God created the world, and his power is still at work today! Did you ever stop to think about that? Those amazing, miraculous things didn t just happen a long time ago, but are happening every day, all around us. I need to remember to pay attention to the wonders all around me. Thank you all for supporting our church and for reaching out to new people with a smile and a hand shake. We had a good Liturgy meeting last week. We discussed All Saints Day, All Souls Day, Thanksgiving, Advent and Christmas. Thank you Anita and Maureen for all you do with the music ministry and our beautiful weekend Masses. There was a Greene Area Churches meeting last week also. Our parishioner Edilu Hunt is the treasurer for the group and did a wonderful job of welcoming the other representatives. They rotate meetings at the various churches and this time it was at ICC. We discussed the success of the Chicken Barbecue Tent at the Greene Labor Day Picnic and the budget for next year. They give out scholarships to graduating seniors, so make sure you encourage a high school senior you know to apply! I know we all lead busy lives and travel on the weekends to visit family and friends. Chris and I are away visiting our daughter Rachel in New Hampshire this weekend. Thank you for remembering your envelopes even when you are away. Our parish still has bills to pay and relies on your contribution. Thank you to those who drop their envelope in the mail. If you would like to receive a box of dated envelopes to help you remember your tithe to the church, all you have to do is call the parish office. The box has weekly, Holy Day and special Diocesan collection envelopes that are really handy. Enjoy these last days of fall. Peace! ~Mary Wentlent Organ Recital hosted by St. Joseph s, Oxford, Sunday, October 23, at 3 pm, Come hear our new organ! A reception will be held after the performance. Performing artist will be Richard Van Auken, a native of Quakertown, PA; he has performed throughout the eastern U.S.
