This week marks the first edition of the ICC Bible Challenge. Each week we will have a different verse from the Bible for you to try and memorize over the week. Write it on an index card, cut it out and put on your refrigerator, or put it in your car! Try to memorize it over the week. Use it as a family contest each week or just as a personal challenge. This weeks verse is: "I command you: be firm and steadfast! 3 August 14, 2016 Monday, August 15, Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is not a Holy Day of Obligation in 2016; it is a Solemnity. Frs. Lupa & Smith will celebrate a Mass of Healing that evening, 5:30 pm at St. Joseph s, Oxford. Both priests will be available for anyone wishing to receive the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. A pot luck supper will follow Mass...all are welcome! If you would like to share a ride to this Mass, sign-up in the vestibule. Indoor Movie Night - Friday, August 19. Now showing - God s Not Dead, a Christian film about faith and the limits one young man will go to in order to defend his belief in God. Free. Everyone is welcome! Popcorn & soda available. Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, NY Page 5 Garden Update: Many thanks to Nancy Amell for sharing her story of the importance of prayer and her enthusiasm for our Memorial Garden. If you missed the colorful insert in last weeks bulletin, you can get one in our vestibule. We are still accepting donations for flowers and the pavers. All donors and memorial names will be listed together as one group on a sign as you enter the garden. Bell Brothers Landscape will begin work on August 15. The wooden additions will arrive by the end of the month. If you know of someone who was a member of this parish but has moved away, and think they may be interested in being a part of this addition to our parish, please all the church office and give us their name. In our garden you can sort out your thoughts, weed your worries, water your hopes and rejoice in your blessings that bloom. A Great Opportunity to Help Catholic Charities of Chenango County - Catholic Charities provides parking management for the Blues Fest, Sat.,8/20 at the Chenango County Fairgrounds. This year s picnic has an International theme: bring an ethnic dish to pass; games will have be broadly based on the Olympics Everyone is invited. The date is Sunday, September 18 immediately following Mass. We will have a Broadway theme; from decorations, to food to the fashion show of costumes. VIRTUS Certification Training will be held Saturday, August 27, 5:30-8:30 pm, in the Parish Hall. All parish volunteers including Rel. Ed. Teachers should attend this training if you haven t already been certified. Those who are certified need to be recertified every five years. 5 August 14, 2016 Father s Notes Transsexual surgery/transgender Persons We hear so much these days about transsexual operations. Is this a moral procedure - change a man into a woman, or a woman into a man? Your question allows of no easy or simple answer. But a couple of things will be significant factors in any such decision. First, let s suppose we are dealing with a reasonably normal person whose male or female identity is well established - emotionally, physically and psychologically, both internally and in relationship to others. For such an individual to attempt a sex change, even to whatever slight degree that might be possible, would be a gross abuse of his or her person, and morally wrong. Few, if any, such cases are that clear cut, however. It is possible for an individual to possess a clear genetic sexual identity (male or female chromosomes) as well as a major physical male or female sex characteristics, and still suffer from a quite confused sexual identity. The complicated system of internal secrettions (hormones), which interact from one organ or gland to another, is subject to all sorts of imbalance; if this imbalance is extensive enough, it may cause serious difficulties in a individual s ability to function in his or her proper sexual relationships. In light of this, many other factors must be considered. Certain surgical procedures are, or soon may be, available to deal with these kinds of pathologies in men or women. For one thing however, there s room for question in some cases how much sex change is really involved. More importantly, procedures are increasingly available to deal with such physical ills by therapy less drastic and questionable that surgery. One gets the impression that most of these radical treatments have been carried out, up to now, with almost no serious consideration of the implications for either the individual or society. That in itself must be deplored. But it is too soon, and too many variables are involved, to conclude at this point that every operation labeled a sex change is always automatically wrong. Fr. I knew a couple of Scripture passages that seemed to imply this, like Mt. 25:31-46, the Last Judgment. Here Jesus says nothing about faith and everything about works of love & compassion. I also knew of James 2:14-26, which explicitly teaches that faith without works is dead. I decided to read the entire New Testament & found a plethora of verses emphasizing the importance of works, including Mt. 7:21-23 & 16:27; Lk. 10:25-37 & 12:9; Jn. 3:20; Rm. 2:1-16; 1 Cor. 3:8 & 6:9-10; 2 Cor. 5:10; Gal. 5:19-21; Eph. 6:8; Rev. 2:23, 20:12, 22:12, and many others. I was sensing deeply that I was in trouble. I began keeping a list of the places in Scripture where I felt the Catholic Church seemed right. When this list reached 20, I knew I was in trouble. When it eventually reached 30, I converted. With the eyes of faith since becoming Catholic, that list has grown to over 70, and it s embarrassing to admit how blind I was. Sunday Mass is only 1 hour out of 168 hours in the week. Holy Mass ends with the final verse of the final hymn, not after Holy Communion. Don t follow Judas example. He was the first one to leave the First Mass, the Last Supper with the Lord, and not for a good reason. 6 Annual Mission Appeal at each Mass on Saturday, August 20 & Sunday, August 21, Sr. Anisia Muthoni, will present her mission appeal on behalf of the Little Sisters of St. Francis. Please be generous in your support. Sr. Anisia co-founded the Little Sisters of St. Francis Assisi Mission to support the basic needs of vulnerable children. She coordinates the Annual Conference for Parish Visitors of the Southern Tier, (laypersons that visit the homebound.) She is a Pastoral Associate at St. Anthony, Endicott. Save the date! We are looking for two new teachers for our children s Religious education program. If you have a strong faith in God s love and enjoy children, then you qualify for this important ministry! Some people complain that kids today don t have a strong faith in Jesus. Now is your chance to help with a solution to the problem. Join the CCD team on Sunday mornings from 9-10 am beginning on September 25. The curriculum is relevant and fun and all classes have 2 teachers working together. The new DRE team has some fun activities planned for the year and there are subs for days you can t be there. Please call the church office if you can help. Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 4 Dear friends, Preseason starts in mid-august for all the JV and Varsity sports around here and most schedule two-a-day practices for the first few weeks, to make sure the athletes are prepared for their sports season. You may have been through this. It can be physically demanding with sore muscles, blisters and sunburn. It can also be mentally exhausting dealing with a new team, and juggling practice, homework and family dinner time! Imagine what a spiritual two-a-day would be like. Attend Mass or a Communion service in the morning. Read a biblical reflection in the afternoon. Watch an online YouTube at Ascension presents, which brings entertaining, faith-filled and dynamic presenters straight into your newsfeed. Look up the daily Bible readings in your Bible, online or in your monthly devotional book. Stop by the church to light a votive candle and say a prayer for a special concern. Donate clothing or food to the needy. Make a commitment to volunteer at the church. Take some fresh fruit to an elderly friend. Attend a workshop or retreat. Listen patiently as a child explains a new discovery. Sit quietly and thank God for that moment of peace. How better prepared would we be to handle the mentally demanding parts of life! Peer pressure at school and in the work place; kids who are strong willed; parents who are strong willed! ; a spouse who gives new meaning to the for better or worse promise; situations where you must suddenly be the strong one making tough decisions for the family. I firmly believe that God gave us a manual for living. This how-to book was inspired by God and written by many prophets, disciples and ordinary people; it s the Bible! It is full of advice, encouragement and lessons on how to handle life! The Office of Evangelization for our Diocese is encouraging the parishes to meet people where they are and bring the Bible to life for them. How do we as a parish reach busy families and adults so that they take the time to learn from this wonderful life source? Our fiscal year starts in July and we have been busy planning a wide assortment of Masses, services, workshops and fellowship for our parishioners and the community.
