Any questions contact Each Sunday during Advent we will light a candle on the Advent Wreath during Mass. The ribbons and candles are the color of rose and violet. Violet is the color of royalty and was used to welcome the coming of a king. We use it during Advent to symbolize both the impending birth of the Messiah and also foreshadow his death. The color of Rose is used on the third Sunday of Advent to reflect our joy that the celebration of Jesus birth is almost here. The Parish Office will be closed for the holidays/vacation the following dates: December 11, 14, 18, 25-28; January 1. We extend our sympathy to......the Urda Family in the recent loss of their loved one, Jean Urda, We pray for the happy repose of her soul. May she find a new life with God in heaven.

3 December 10, 2017 Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, NY Page 5 Bring your baby Jesus from your home Manger scene on the weekend of Dec. 16 and 17 for a special blessing by Father Machira. Pope Francis has designated the third Sunday of Advent (Gaudete Sunday) as a time when parishes across the world can join together for a Blessing of the Bambinelli. We will have a few small figurines of baby Jesus in the Manger for those who do not bring one but still want to participate in this special blessing. Christmas Chime Group- There will be a special practice for the Christmas Chime Group after Mass on Sunday, December 17 in the church. All are welcome as this is an inter generational group. Grandparents, adults and teenagers are welcome. We are asking that any middle school age child be accompanied by a family member, as the chime music can be very challenging. Please sign up in the vestibule if you would like to play the hand chimes this Christmas. The Light is on For You, A special Diocesan wide Penance Service, Monday Dec. 18 Fr. Machira will hear confession here at ICC from 6-7:30 pm and St. Joseph 4-5 pm Examination of Conscience literature is available in the vestibule. Time for a Change It's time to replace the folding chairs in our social hall. If you are interested in being on the planning committee for this project, please call the church office and let us know. We will be gathering to investigate the many options and prices, and then presenting the plan to the parish family. If you would like to make a special donation to help us kick start this project, we would welcome any amount. The Word Among Us an Advent devotional book, is available in the vestibule. Feel free to take one to a friend or elderly homebound parishioner. Our 2018 Catholic Calendars are available for pick-up in the vestibule. Volunteer Opportunities Greene Food Pantry - We collect non-perishable foods for our local food pantry. May & November we cover the hours at the Pantry. Meals On Wheels Our volunteers make the deliveries for August & February: Mon, Wed, Fri, 11:15am. Call the Parish Office to join our team! Bottle & Can Drive - drop off your refundable items n the bin next to the Rectory garage. St. Pauly Textile collection shed in our parking lot. Donate your unwanted clothes & fabric items & ICC receives 4 cents per pound collected. Circle of Friends is a special ministry for the senior members of our parish offers two events; Simply Social and Cards and Conversation. Please spread the word about these two opportunities for catching up with friends. Adult Bereavement Support Group He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Psalm 147:3 Grief is experienced in so many ways physical, emotional and spiritual. One needs a place to recognize that these reactions are part of the journey of grief. Being with other grieving people can reaffirm that one is not going crazy. While every loss in unique, through support groups one can bask in the support of others who have experienced loss and understand. A bereavement support group is a safe place for grieving adults to learn they are not alone, while receiving and giving support to others. ICC is offering an Adult Bereavement Support Group on Saturday, Dec. 16 at 11:00 am, meeting in the front gathering room off the entrance vestibule. You need not be a member of Immaculate Conception to attend. All are welcome. 5 Family Page ~ THE STORY OF THE JESSE TREE In the Old Testament, we learn that Jesse was the father of the great King David. Jesus was from the house of David. In Church art a design developed showing the relationship of Jesus with Jesse. This design showed a branched tree that had pictures of other Old and New Testament figures who were ancestors of Jesus. At the top of the tree were figures of Mary and Jesus. This custom has been used for years to help Christians prepare for Christmas. Our Jesse Tree shows the genealogy of Jesus from creation of the world to John the Baptist. This second Sunday of Advent has the next five stories. Story #6 Isaac Genesis 22:1-14 "Sometime later God tested Abraham..." Story #8 Joseph-Genesis 37:23-28; 45: 3-15 "Jacob (now called Israel) loved his son Joseph more than any of his other sons. and he made an ornate robe for him..." Story #7 Jacob Genesis 25:1-34; 28:10-15 " This is the account of the family line of Abraham's son Isaac... and Isaac was 40 years old when he married Rebekah There were twin boys in her womb The first son was Esau and his brother was named Jacob." Middle School and High School News- All youth interested in delivering Rotary Christmas Baskets should meet in our church parking lot on Saturday, December 16 at 8 am. Service Project, Saturday, Dec.16-deliver Rotary Club Christmas Baskets. All Young Families are invited to make a gingerbread house after Mass, Sunday, December 17. Families can take advantage of this service for part of Mass or the entire Mass, whatever suits their needs. This is one of the many ways we are trying to show young families they are welcome at ICC! Please note: we will be providing the nursery during the 3:30 pm Christmas Eve Carols & Mass. How can there be too many children? That is like saying there are too many flowers. St. Teresa of Kolkata Confirmation student Conner Grant will be raising funds for his Eagle Scout Project. Please save your bottles and cans over the holiday for his bottle drive to be held after Christmas. Please sign up in the vestibule if your child wants to be part of the Christmas Pageant on Christmas Eve. You can also contact Mary Wentlent in the church office. We need adults to help iron the costumes for the pageant and help with the practicing the morning of December 17. Please contact the church office if you can help with this fun tradition at ICC. Dear friends, I d like to respond to the many questions about Father Lupa and his situation in the Diocese. The times we live in bombard us with information; store checkout aisles, TV news, radio talk shows, Internet everything! It s so easy to get sucked into thinking we want and need all the details of someone's situation. We don t know why Father Lupa was asked to resign from St. Malachy and St. Theresa, just that it wasn t any kind of abuse issue. It was a personnel issue and he is still a priest in our Diocese. I admit I also was very curious as to more details, but this is really all we need to know. I heard from many parishioners that they love Father Lupa, support him and worry about his health. I called Msgr. Putano and relayed these messages. I then called Father Lupa and told him the people here love and support him. He sounded his usual upbeat and positive self and appreciated this news very much. I also spoke to the office staff at those affected parishes and offered help and support in anyway. They are part of our Pastoral Care Area and one of our goals is to help each other as much as we can. So thank you to everyone for thinking the best of Father Lupa who only showed us kindness and compassion. The best way to move forward is to pass it on and treat others in this same spirit. Our Bishop needs our support as well as he enters his last year before he hits retirement age. It can t be easy to coordinate a Catholic Diocese in 2017! We mustn t lose sight of our goal: to be a Catholic Community of believers in Jesus Christ, by loving others the way God loves us. Many thanks to Father Paul for spending time writing the beautiful petitions for our Feast Day celebration on Friday. He wanted to help our celebration be unique and special. Father Paul has a hectic week travelling around to churches, schools and the Veterans Home celebrating Mass, and we are very lucky he is happy to be our pastor. If you would like to remember him with a Christmas Card, we will leave a special basket in the Sacristy these next few weeks. This can be a busy hectic season, but it should also be full of anticipation for Christmas, when we celebrate Jesus coming into the world. Let s not lose sight of this!
