In doing so, we help build a culture that cherishes all human life. Building a culture of life is simply part of who we are as Christians, as followers of Christ. Each October (Respect Life Month), the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops kicks off a new cycle of the Respect Life Program - a year -round, nationwide effort to help Catholics understand, value, and become engaged with cultivating respect for life.

As Catholics around the world gather at the Eucharist around the table of the Lord, let us PRAY for the Church s worldwide missionary work and OFFER financial help through a special collection for The Society for the PROPAGATION OF THE FAITH. Your generosity gives hope to vulnerable communities throughout Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Pacific Islands. Our church has a Giving Tree Program during Advent for those in need. We place tags on the tree and parishioners can take a tag and buy a special gift for someone. If you know of someone that would appreciate a small gift this Christmas, please call Bonnie Norton and give her the name and contact information. She will make sure an anonymous tag is put on the Giving Tree for this person. We have a limit of 10 people requested per family. The giving tree will be up the weekend of Nov. 17/18. 3 October 21, 2018 Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, NY Page 5 Circle of Friends Our friends at St. Josephs, Oxford have invited us to a morning of games, cards and conversation on Wednesday, October 24. Anyone interested in joining us, contact the Parish Office so that we can carpool. We will leave Greene at 10:10, and we will return by Noon. ICC offers care packages to our college age parishioners. Twice a year just before exam time, care packages are mailed out with snacks, gift cards for coffee, prayer cards and a note of encouragement from the parish family. Please contact Margaret Hanrahan with your student s address, even if it s the same as last year. (jghanrahan@aol.com or text ). Deadline for requests is November 1. Our annual Holiday Pie Sale will be after both weekend Masses Nov. 17/18. There is a sign up sheet in the vestibule for anyone wishing to help purchase pie baking supplies, and also to order a specific pie for your family meal. You can also sign up to join the baking team on Friday, Nov. 16 from 9-3 pm in the church kitchen. Remember...many hands make light work! Are you looking forward to baking Christmas cookies? We will be selling Christmas Cookie Platters this year after the weekend masses on Dec. 15/16. If you would like to bake and donate a few dozen cookies, the sign up will begin on Nov. 18. This gives you time to go through your recipes and pick some favorites! Lasagna Dinner: Thank you to all who supported this successful fundraiser! Indulge me to share another 3-minute retreat. It was on the power of words. Psalm 33 says, By the Lord s word, the heavens were made. Everything God imagined came into being through God s words. And God saw that it was good. Those are powerful words! Our words may not create rivers and trees, but they have the ability to build up or tear down, just the same. Recall the time you felt the power of a harsh word on your self-esteem. Or the elation that came from a kind word that was spoken during a difficult day. Where and how can we use our power of speech to continue in God s continuous work of creation? Whose words have helped to build us up lately? Our parish family continues to grow together, to get to know each other, to help each other. We are building the kingdom of God right here at Immaculate Conception! It is reassuring to know that we have the Bible, filled with lessons to help us handle each day. May this small verse in the book of Psalms, help us use our words in a big way as we journey the road of Missionary Disciples here in our parish and community. Many thanks to Kathy Ives and her team for another successful Lasagna Dinner. It was so nice of new member Deborah Rice to help that day, and get to know this fun group of the parish family. Pat and Gary Husband have been busy training some new Eucharistic Ministers, repairing a beloved statue and giving the small outside statue a fresh coat of paint. It was a huge task to remove the overgrown bushes that were out by this little statue, and we thank Don Brown, Chris Wentlent and Zach Urda for that backbreaking, chainsaw breaking work! The little statue honoring the unborn child is now a beautiful reminder as we enter out church property. Lastly, the first service project day for our children was a huge success! Thank you to our teachers and leader Gloria Straniero for planning this fun morning of helping even our young church members see they can be missionary disciples too. Enjoy the beautiful fall colors. Month of the Rosary: during the month of October, 2018, Pope Francis has requested "the faithful of all the world to pray that the Holy Mother of God place the Church beneath her protective mantle" Respect Life Service Project for October: All children in our religious education program were given a baby bottle to take home and fill with lose change and other donations. Maybe a special chore could earn a special donation in the baby bottle! If your child did not get one of these, there is a basket with extra bottles in the church hall. Please return all baby bottles on Sunday October 28. There will be a special collection during the youth Mass. These donations will be sent to "Rise!" This organization is out of Endicott and helps mothers and babies that live with domestic violence in their home. This service project is one way we can be missionary disciples in our community. Creator of all good things, thank you for the gift of speech and for the ability to share in your ongoing creation of all that exists. Amen Free Family Advent Wreath Making Project- Sunday Nov. 18 The children will have fun with Advent projects during class at 9 am and all families are invited to stay after Mass for a coffee hour and make a beautiful and unique Advent wreath for your home.
