5 The Year of the Family, December 3, 2017 to November 25, 2018 Family Page Embrace your faith everyday. Mark 11:1-11 WORD SEARCH How to Carry the Meaning of Holy Week Through the Year...As Catholics, we celebrate a roundness that we call the Paschal Mystery during Holy Week each year. Jesus life, death, and resurrection demonstrate for us that death is not an ending; it s not the last stop on a linear journey. Instead, Jesus shows us that with God, we can move from birth through death into new life. We call the week in which we celebrate the Triduum of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter a holy week. And rightly so. The word holy means sacred or blessed in our current usage, but it comes from a Germanic root that means something a little different whole. In other words, the very roundness of the journey from life through death and back to life again is what makes it sacred. Perhaps the biggest mistake we sometimes make with Holy Week is when we think of it as just one week out of the year. Certainly, there is just one week in which we celebrate the Triduum as a community in ritual and sacrament. But every week can be a holy week. Every week should be whole. For that to happen, we simply need Easter eyes eyes that see and honor the roundness in all of life as experiences of God. Every time we love, get hurt, but then forgive, we become whole. Every time we succeed, then fail, but then gain the courage and wisdom to start again, we understand that life is sacred. Every time we are home, then move away, then return home literally or figuratively we are blessed. For this reason, and because the Diocese adheres to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, the Diocese mandates that all clergy, all members of religious orders, all parish and diocesan employees (even those who do not come into contact with children) and all volunteers who are in contact with children, young people and/or vulnerable adults undergo Safe Environment Training within 60 days of their start date. To learn more, visit our website: Dear friends, If you ve raised strong willed teenagers, you will relate to this story. It had been a week of vacation with my parents and our family. Some of the kids were at the age of loving everything; fishing with Grandpa, listening to stories on the porch swing with Grandma, riding bikes, etc. Some were at the age of wanting to drive into the local coffee shop for daily socializing. But one was in the throws of teenager-hood swinging between being goofy and fun or deep in depression about life in general. The night before we were to come home, the latter had a particularly bad evening that included shouting, tears and lots of angst filled conversation. The morning we were to leave, we were saying our awkward goodbyes on the porch and my Dad kindly held my daughter s face in his hands and said, My sweet granddaughter, today is a new day. That s all he said as he smiled into her face. As quiet tears streamed down her face, there was such a feeling of calm, and all would be well. I think of this scene often when I think of how God relates to us, with all of our ups and downs. Life can be so hard and confusing! We even get angry at God for pain we may feel. But what is at the core of our Catholic faith? The Paschal Mystery, which is simply the process of dying and rising, death and new life. We also experience the seasons and our own dying and risings. We learn from Jesus that new life can come from death, and that we can find meaning in tough times, that there really is light in the darkness. We learn that all life has this rhythm of dying and rising and that God is with us in good times and in bad. What Christ experienced this past Holy Week, suffering, death and new life, has forever changed us and given us a different way of living. New life surrounds us! Death no longer has the last word! We have the power of hope, that new life will come from death. We need to remember that God holds the master plan. So today the Easter season is upon us; Jesus rose from the dead! Today he is holding our face in his hands and gazing lovingly into our face, saying, Today is a new day. I need to thank the many people and Father Paul, who helped our parish this week by either attending a service or Mass, cleaned, decorated, served and basically loved our parish through the highlight of the year: Holy Week. This is an amazing parish of teamwork. Happy Easter! Peace!~Mary Wentlent
