All funds given in memory of a loved one will be acknowledged in the bulletin throughout the summer. What is the Fisherman s Club? Father Hage, a new young Priest, helps manage the Fisherman s Club, which is a discernment process for college age men years old. He describes the average candidate to the Priesthood in these ways; a young man not as interested in terms like liberal and conservative, but in the task of bringing people to the lord, saving souls. Young men are drawn to this new idea of fatherhood, as expressed as one who offers sacrifice and one who serves. He may doubt his unworthiness and not be a strong practicing Catholic. We need to be merciful to them and support them. The average age in Father Hage s seminary community was 33, which means they already had careers before having a conversion experience. He shared that there is a great fear of commitment with this generation whether it is to become a priest or get married. He concludes that all vocations begin in the home. Parents can sometimes be the biggest determent to the priesthood. We need to develop a serious attitude of gratitude to our priest in our parishes, and not expect too much from them. He invites us to look at the young men in our parishes and families, and consider inviting someone to consider the priesthood. The Fisherman s Club was suggested by Bishop Cunningham and has a goal of having a presence on college campuses in our Diocese

Act. 9:18 A good friend of mine was raised in a home where his mother was a devout Catholic and his father was not a believer. My friend told me how his mother never ceased praying for her husband. Her prayer was that he would come to the faith. Fifty years or so into their marriage, he became Catholic. We all have friends and family who have drifted from the faith or who have never become believers. Do we continue to pray for them? Do we live the kind of lives that show them how fulfilling and meaningful the Christian life can be? What do we do when - year after year - they do not budge? Do we give up? Do we alienate ourselves from them by withdrawing our friendship? Of do we stick by them no matter what, showing the steadfastness, fortitude and faith that comes from God alone? Most importantly, are we there for them when times got hard, so that when the scales finally fall from their eyes and they reach out and seek God, they will be able to see the face of Christ in us? Jesus, help me to persevere in praying for my family and friends who don t yet know you. Steve Givens Good Shepherding I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must lead them, too. John 10:16 In one thing, all shepherds are alike...the main thing they do is keep their flock together. They take care, not only of this one or that, but of all of them, and if any one gets lost, as Jesus explained, they will not rest before they are all together again We have to bring people together, all of them, without discrimination of race, sex or rank, being good shepherds of the flock, even at the risk of our lives. We should be shepherds like that in the families in which we live, feeling responsible for keeping all of them together. We should be shepherds like that in the schools where we learn or teach, taking care that no one is overlooked, left out or lost. We should be shepherds like that when determining our political stand, when evaluating news or reading our papers. We should be shepherds, keeping the whole of humanity together. Fr. Blessed Cardinal John Henry Newman Rooted in the Love of Jesus When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say. You will be given at that moment what you are to say. Matthew 10:19 Christian leaders cannot simply be persons who have well-informed opinions about the burning issues of our time. Their leadership must be rooted in the permanent, intimate relationship with the incarnate Word, Jesus, and they need to find there the source for their words, advice, and guidance. Through the discipline of contemplative prayer, Christian leaders have to learn to listen again and again to the voice of love and to find there the wisdom and courage to address whatever issue presents itself to them. Dealing with burning issues without being rooted in a deep personal relationship with God easily leads to divisiveness because, before we know it, our sense of self is caught up in our opinion about a given subject. But when we are securely rooted in personal intimacy with the source of life, it will be possible to remain flexible but not relativistic, convinced without being rigid, willing to confront without being offensive, gentle and forgiving without being soft, and true witnesses without being manipulative. St. Catherine of Siena, Religious Sister & Doctor of the Church, The Importance of Singing at Mass 19. The faithful who gather together to await the Lord s coming are instructed by the Apostle Paul to sing psalms, hymns, and inspired songs (see Col 3:16). Song is the sign of the heart s joy (see Acts 2:46). Thus St. Augustine says rightly: to sing belongs to lovers. There is also the ancient proverb: One who sings well prays twice. With due consideration for the culture and ability of each congregation, great importance should be attached to the use of singing at Mass; but it is not always necessary to sing all the texts that are of themselves meant to be sung. (from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal) God doesn t care if you have a great voice. He looks at the effort you put forth that comes from your heart. So pick up your hymnal and sing out to the Lord (or at least fake it!)

6 Fatima 100 years later What can we learn? (Excerpts from the Catholic Digest, May 2017, will be shared each week during the month of May.) 2017 is an exciting year for Catholics who have devotion to the Blessed Mother. Like every year, May is a very important month for Marian devotion, with May crowning s and celebrating Marian feasts. This year. May 13 has special importance because it marks the 100th anniversary of the beginning of Mary s apparitions to the three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal. Many people know Mary appeared in 1917 to three shepherd children: Jacinta Marto, age six, Francisco Marto, age eight and Lucia dos Santos, age nine. One of the forgotten facts is that the Angel of Peace preceded the 1917 Marian apparitions, visiting the children three times in the spring of 1916, serving as a preface for the message Mary would speak later. In the first apparition, the angel taught the children two different prayers. The first prayer was relatively short: My God, I believe, I adore, I hope, and I love you. I ask pardon for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope, and do not love you. In the second angelic apparition, the angel encouraged the children to offer sacrifices to God and to pray for peace, and he identified himself as the Angel of Portugal. In the third apparition, the angel appeared with a host and chalice and taught the children a prayer as an act of adoration of the Eucharist. From the hand of the angel, Lucia received the host, while Jacinta and Francisco received from the chalice. These often-forgotten angelic apparitions can help us be a part of living the message of Fatima in two ways. First by praying for those who do not believe, and second by making known the biblical reality that each of us has a guardian angel. Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 4 Dear friends, What a week for having patience and fortitude! Many were without electricity and water for several days, and that can really wear you down! You will be interested to know that a large tree came down on the church property and landed safely alongside the rectory and garage. Our building and grounds rep thinks only a corner of the garage gutter was damaged. Several other leaning trees helped damage the power and phone lines there, causing the church office to have no phone or internet service for most of the week. The village electricians and NYSEG worked together on its repair. They did a wonderful job considering all the folks in our area that needed their help this week. I was glad they were able to use our parking lot for their lunch breaks. The tenants in the rectory are okay. God must have great things planned for their life, as he carefully laid that tree down with no harm to their family. Those mighty winds are what I envision when I hear about Pentecost and the force of the Holy Spirit. We have four more weeks of Easter before we get to celebrate that special day. Our building and grounds team added some much needed light to the parking lot. A 3-head lighting unit was mounted at the top of the pole that extends from the front corner of the building. Travis Granger with Eastern Energy did a great job with help from D.J. Dunlap. We have many groups that use our building in the evenings and now they can safely use the parking lot: Scouts, Knights of Columbus, American Legion and church committees. We were recognized in the Catholic Sun newspaper for being a leading parish in the Diocese that supports the HOPE Appeal. 47% of our parishioners participated last year. That ranks us alongside some of the big churches in Binghamton and Syracuse and helps us to stand out as a thriving parish, moving ahead in sustainability and goals for the future. We received back to the parish a check for over 1K because we had such tremendous success last year. The new HOPE Appeal material has just arrived and we will be showing this years campaign video next weekend. In closing, congratulations Father Lupa on your assignment to St. Malachy in Sherburne and St. Theresa of the Infant Jesus in New Berlin. We will miss you!
