1 Church of the Immaculate Conception We at Immaculate Conception are a group of people bound together by our belief in Jesus Christ as our Savior. When we were baptized, we were called to share in His work. Therefore we pledge ourselves to build a community where all are welcomed, loved, needed and appreciated. Ash Wednesday The Lenten Season begins Wednesday, February 10 with the imposition of Blessed Ashes on our foreheads at all Masses that day. All parishioners are invited to join with our Christian neighbors as we seek to grow in God s grace in this Holy Lenten Season that is upon us. Remember man/woman that you are dust and unto dust you shall return. Starting Feb. 17, on Wednesdays during Lent, Fr. Lupa will celebrate Mass at 7:00 pm followed by Stations of the Cross. Check the church answering machine for cancelations due to inclement weather.

3 February 6, 2016 We will observe World Marriage Day the weekend of February 13/14. Fr. Lupa will invite all couples to come forward for a special blessing at both weekend Masses. We will have a reception after Mass on Sunday and married couples are invited to bring their wedding pictures to share with your parish friends at the reception. I f you can help with the reception please call the church office. We extend our sympathy to the Urda Family in the recent loss of their loved one, Mary Litchko, 1/30/16. We pray for the happy repose of her soul. May she find a new life with God in heaven. Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, NY Page 5 Volunteer Opportunities Greene Food Pantry The first weekend of each month we take up a collection of non-perishable foods for our local food pantry. May & November we cover the hours at the Pantry. Meals On Wheels Our volunteers make the deliveries for August & February: Mon, Wed, Fri, 11:15am. Our Brother s Keeper We take donations of CLEAN blankets, quilts, sheets, towels, batting & fiber fill. & yarn. Please bag the items. Bottle & Can Drive - drop off your refundable items n the bin next to the Rectory garage. St. Pauly Textile collection shed in our parking lot. Donate your unwanted clothes & fabric items & ICC receives 2 cents per pound collected. IGNITE 2016 Catholic Men's Conference Attention men of the parish, the theme for the 8 th Annual IGNITE Men s Conference is Merciful Like the Father. Almost 7,000 men have attended the previous conferences and we are looking to make sure 2016 breaks the 8,000 mark! World Day of the Sick, February 11 is an observation introduced by Pope John Paul II as a way for believers to offer prayers for those suffering from illnesses. The day coincides with the commemoration of Our Lady of Lourdes and is an important opportunity for those who serve in Catholic health ministry to reflect on caring for those who are sick as well as those who provide care to them. Stewardship involves a willingness to give from the very core of who we are and what we have; from substance rather than abundance Le Moyne College C.Y.O. 5 February 7, 2016 Father s Notes Returning to Jesus But Herod said,...who then is this Jesus about whom I hear such things? And he kept trying to see Jesus. Luke 9:9 Even Herod - that fox as Jesus called him - was interested in Jesus & felt a keen desire to see Him. What was (and is) so attractive about Jesus? What has kept persons throughout the centuries seeking Him & longing for His companionship? Why do people feel so drawn to Jesus? I have a great respect for the traditions & teachings of other religions, but always, I return to Jesus & His message. Here I feel most at home, most inspired, most challenged to live my life well. What attracts me to Jesus? His integrity: Jesus always lived what He taught. His compassionate presence: He expended love to all those who were hurting. His courage: against injustice & religious corruption of His time. His openness: He welcomed those who were very different from Himself - lepers, Samaritans, sinners. All knew they had a welcome from Jesus. Love emanated from His being & His actions. Let us ask ourselves today what attracts us to Jesus. It is a good day to spend some time with Him, renewing & deepening our friendship. Sr. Joyce Rupp, O.S.M. Coming to Jesus is the condition for finding relief. All we need to do is take that first step, to choose to enter the sphere of His presence, and the unnatural pressures borne down upon us by both the world and ourselves begin to dissipate. To the extent that we are far from Jesus, we are the source of our own greatest burdens. Without Him as Lord, we are caught in the tyranny of our passions and susceptible to the world s manipulation and the influence of the Evil One. Without the allconsuming love of Jesus burning in our heart as pure transforming fire, the passions roam the landscape of our soul like hungry orphans. Jesus, whose name means savior, is by definition the source of relief from all oppression, whether self generated within or imposed on us from without. Children s Mass, February 28 Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 4 Dear friends, Someone asked me about the Income and Expense part of the bulletin, and commented that December showed a huge increase in income. There are several reasons why. We had large crowds on Christmas Eve and Day. We also were very fortunate that a few families gave end of year donations. Lastly, we just didn t have that many expenses in December. Our CCD program already purchased their supplies back in the summer. The social events were relatively inexpensive, and we reuse most Christmas decorations from year to year. Our new roof and window caulking maintenance have resulted in lower heating bills this year. (Plus it just hasn t been that cold out!) On the flip side, we have seen more people attending Mass and we welcomed new families to the parish in December. In January, we had some yearly expenses like the taxes paid for the Rectory. All in all, we are doing very well financially and are able to pay all bills each month with ease. Thank you for financially supporting our parish. I think we are doing good things for our families and our community. Last weekend was a busy one at ICC! The bingo night sponsored by the social committee was very successful with 80+ people in attendance. There were older folks, younger folks, families and visitors. The soup and chili was a big hit with most people going back for seconds and thirds! Thank you, Kelly Erickson for planning the Bingo part and Anita Urda for the soup/chili part. Thanks also to Jess Trepa and the youth who set up and helped with clean up. It was a really fun evening for the parish! The Youth Mass on Sunday was a real celebration with the chimes, youth readers and singers, ushers and gift bearers. Father Kris Boretto enjoyed the Family Time News with the Love Graffiti Heart and Valentine Prayer. Thank you, Gloria Straniero for helping to coordinate this monthly worship.
