We ve met our goal Thank you to our generous parishioners who have contributed to the Annual HOPE Appeal. 65 Parishioners have donated $10,275.08; our goal being $10, If you have not yet responded to the HOPE Appeal, we ask that you prayerfully consider making a pledge to help support the needs of our diocese. 3 July 10, 2016 Marion Memorial Garden Update- Many parishioners have committed to donating handmade items for the craft show in July. Stop by and check out the handiwork on display in the Hall! This fundraiser will benefit the construction of the garden. We have received 3 estimates for the paver foundation and will decide soon who will construct the beautiful stone walking surface. We want it to be level and easy for everyone to navigate. If anyone wants to donate money for this garden in memory of a loved one, please fill out one of the envelopes in the vestibule or call the church office. This garden will be a beautiful place for prayer and reflection for all in our parish and community. Flower Arranging Workshop Monday, July 11, 6:30 pm in the Pavilion. A fun time for parishioners to get together. Kids can bring yard games. Snacks will be served. Folks can bring a favorite small vase or even a cleaned out watermelon to set some flowers in. Seniors can park on the grass on the side near the hall for easy access. Indoor Movie Night - Friday, July 22, 7 pm. Field of Dreams starring Kevin Costner. Snacks & soda provided. All are welcome! Our parish will have a table at the Greene Craft Show this summer on Saturday, July 23. We need donated items that are hand made to sell at our table. We need items ahead of time and people to help price things, set up the booth, take a shift selling on the day of the craft show, and clean up afterwards. Please consider donating a little time for this 'fun' fundraiser! We need 7 people to help with painting the Rectory and Garage, Saturday, August 6 starting at 8 am. The goal is to complete the exterior painting in one day, if we get the necessary volunteers. This will be a big group effort and will complete the updating of the rectory and garage, which included new roofs, removal of the large spruce, removal of 5 tree stumps and an improved driveway. If you or a family member are interested in helping with the painting, please sign up in the vestibule or see Chris Wentlent after a Sunday Mass. Remember the saying- Many hands make light work! Please leave your donation in the basket in the Parish Hall vestibule. May & November we cover the hours at the Pantry. We need another team member to cover the Tuesday hours in May & November. Please contact the Parish Office if you can help. Meals On Wheels Our volunteers make the deliveries for August & February: Mon, Wed, Fri, 11:15am. Call the Parish Office to join our team! Our Brother s Keeper We take donations of CLEAN blankets, quilts, sheets, towels, batting & fiber fill. & yarn. Please bag the items. Our next sleeping bag workshop will be this summer. 5 July 10, 2016 Father s Notes Did you ever feel like a nothing? Like a blank piece of paper? I ve been alive for 22 years and I feel like I ve never made an impression on the world. My brother killed himself, and now I cannot. After he died my family was crushed; they ll never be the same. I can t do that to them again. Does God test everyone this way? Is it my imagination, or are other people in this world relatively happy? How can I get help? Your letter is proof again of how much we need each other on this earth. It also proves how impossible it is for us to judge another person s life, or even in many ways our own. For better or worse, we are deeply involved with each other. You need to talk to someone who loves you and is concerned about you, to air your feelings of guilt and frustration. I m not sure who that might be for you, but please do not rule out your own family too quickly. Too often after a tragedy such as your family has suffered, parents and children tend to hide their feeling from each other out of loving concern not to add their own problems to the emotional hurts already suffered by other members of the family. Tenderness & thoughtfulness are called for here. But sometimes one member s willingness to expose his or her fears and hurts can help others do the same, to the mutual support and encouragement of everyone. Beyond that you might talk with a friend or with a priest in whom you have confidence, your own parish priest or someone else. Above all, know that there is real hope for you. The feeling so desolation and depression you express are common, even normal, in a time of grief and loss such as you and your family have experienced. Fr. John J. Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 3 A Liturgical Note: The Tabernacle in the Sanctuary In every Catholic Church is a container made of material that must be fireproof and burglar-proof because it is where the Sacred Consecrated Hosts are reserved for ministry to the sick and dying and for private prayer and adoration. By reserving the Blessed Sacrament in a Tabernacle, the Church teaches the continuing presence of Jesus in the Sacred Host. Catholics often make private visits to the Church to pray to Jesus in front of the Tabernacle. In the Old Testament times, the Tabernacle was used by the Chosen People, the Jews, to symbolize God s holy yet invisible presence in their midst. In fact, the Lord provided details to Moses on how to build and decorate the earliest of tabernacles (see Exodus 25-27). Because of the persecutions in the first 3 centuries, Christians did not use tabernacles. Rather the Holy Eucharist was taken to private homes to keep it safe. In later years the container that held the Blessed Sacrament in churches built by the Catholic Believers was placed near the main altar which has been the custom since the early 1600 s. In large Cathedral or Basilica churches, it may also be placed in a small Blessed Sacrament chapel, at all times that the Sacrament is reserved in the Tabernacle, a red or white Sanctuary Lamp burns near it as a reminder that the Eucharist Christ is present among His people. In passing before the Tabernacle or before entering or exiting our pew, we look to the Tabernacle and genuflect on our right knee if we are physically able. If unable, a profound bow form the waist is also a sign of reverence and respect to the Lord s Presence in the Sacred Hosts reserved in the Tabernacle. A Convert s View Church history paints a very different picture of the ancient Christians from what I had learned in the Church of Christ from sincere, but sincerely wrong, teachers and preachers. I discovered through studying Scripture and the writings of the early Church Fathers that the Holy Spirit did indeed guide the Church into all Truth and that the Apostles and their successors spread this Truth throughout the world by means of the Catholic Church, which grew despite the many persecutions that came against her. 6 Save the Date- Vacation Bible School will be the week of July from 6-8:15. We will once again join up with the Greene Area Churches for a joint summer experience for our community s children. This years theme is 'Workshop of Wonders' and will feature games, songs, crafts and learning about Jesus Miracles and how to imagine and build with God. If you have grandchildren visiting, they might enjoy this fun evening of games, songs, crafts and more! Registration is at 6 pm each night and they don t need to attend each night to participate. We could use a few volunteers to help at the registration desk, at the Congregational Church, on Monday & Tuesday, 5:30-6:30 pm. Contact the Parish Office. Please pray for our Young adults Libby Norton and Jennifer Urda who are attending a Diocesan training workshop this weekend called Relit- The Heart of Evangelization. Come join us and bring a friend! Page 4 Dear friends, I got back from vacation in time to attend the funeral of Mark Ketzak. It was a beautiful celebration of his life and the homily by Father Lupa was a meaningful weaving of Mark s struggle with cancer, our relationship with the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead, and our faith in everlasting life with Jesus when we pass on. I felt very fortunate to experience this. Some people have chosen to ignore the fact that we have a loving God watching over us. They say, Nobody goes to church anymore. So are they also saying that God doesn t watch over them anymore? I don t think so. God created this amazing world, he created you and me, and I believe he patiently waits for us to ask for help and guidance. Pope Francis said in his Homily on Divine Mercy Sunday 2013, When Peter denied Jesus three times and hit the bottom, he met the gaze of Jesus that said, Don't be afraid of your weakness, trust in me. He implores us to never lose trust in the patience and mercy of God. We may have times in our life when we think we can just go along and handle things on our own. But then reality hits, and we find ourselves hit the bottom, perhaps at a funeral for a loved one. That s when we need to hold onto our faith and ask for the love and strength God can give us. It s there for us. All we have to do is ask. I read somewhere, that God is just a prayer away. Thank you to all those from our parish, who gave of their time in the Sacristy, planned the funeral liturgies and coordinated the luncheons afterwards. I am so happy that our parish was able to reach out to these three families who experienced the loss of a loved one. I know it took a lot of time. You are the hands and feet of Christ at work in our parish. By supporting this parish and being a member here, everyone helps in a small way.
