Please take a copy and review it as an aid to making a good, humble and sincere Confession in preparation for Easter Thank you, Father Lupa The Intergenerational Chime Group will practice after Mass on Sunday March 29 from 11:30-12:15 and also before Mass on Easter Sunday April 5 from 9:45-10:15. The song will be for a prelude before Mass on Easter Sunday. All ages and abilities are welcome to come together and enjoy playing the hand chimes. Please sign up in the vestibule. We need help decorating the church for Easter on Saturday March 28 at 10:30. Annual Easter Reception & Egg Hunt after the 10:30 am Easter Sunday Mass. Greene Food Pantry The first weekend of each month we take up a collection of nonperishable foods for our local food pantry. May & November we cover the hours at the Pantry. Our Brother s Keeper We take donations of CLEAN blankets, quilts, sheets, towels, batting & fiber fill. They just recently requested donations of yarn. Please bag the items for pick-up. Greene Area Churches Food Pantry - It s that time of year again! March and April for the Food Pantry are like a PBS Pledge Drive. 5 March 29, 2015 Father s Notes Florida bishops disappointed with court rulings on same-sex marriage. Florida s Catholic bishops say they were disappointed by a federal judge s ruling striking down the state s ban of same-sex marriage as well as with higher courts that denied a stay of the decision. In reversing the state s ban of same-sex marriage, U. S. District Judge Robert L. Hinkle of Tallahassee overturned a state constitutional amendment approved by nearly 62 percent of voters in 2008, the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops said in a Jan. 5 statement. Hinkle, appointed by President Bill Clinton, declared the state ban unconstitutional in August, but stayed the decision through Jan. 5 to allow time for legal appeals. Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, a Republican, sought extensions of the stay from the U.S. 11th Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court, but both turned her down, allowing for same-sex marriages to begin Jan 6. Marriage based on the complementarity of the sexes is the lifeblood of family, and family is the foundation of our society, the Bishops said. The crisis that sadly the family is experiencing today will only be aggravated by imposing this redefinition of marriage. Society must rediscover the irreplaceable roles of both mother and father who bring unique gifts to the education and rearing of children. The bishops said the redefinition of marriage will have implications not yet fully understood. Act of Contrition My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. Matthew 11:28 One must seek the refreshment and rest Jesus offers. One must leave behind the oppressive situations of one s life and go to Jesus, who calls out to all who are so exhausted that they want to change their life. Coming to Jesus is the condition for finding relief. All we need to do is take that first step, to choose to enter the sphere of His presence, and the unnatural pressures borne down upon us by both the world and ourselves begin to dissipate. To the extent that we are far from Jesus, we are the source of our own greatest burdens. Without Him as Lord, we are caught in the tyranny of our passions and susceptible to the world s manipulation and the influence of the Evil One. Without the all-consuming love of Jesus burning in our heart as pure transforming fire, the passions roam the landscape of our soul like hungry orphans. Jesus, whose name means savior, is by definition the source of relief from all oppression, whether self generated within or imposed on us from without. Grant that I may spend the hours of this day gladly working with You according to Your will. Help me just for today and be with me in it all. In the long hours of work, that I may not weary or grow slack in serving You. In conversations, that they man not be to me occasions of uncharitableness. In the day s worries and disappointments, that I may be patient with myself and those around me. In temptations, that I may be generous and loyal. So that when the day is over I may lay it at your feet, with its successes which are all Yours, and its failures which are all my own., And feel that life is real, peaceful and blessed when spent with You as the guest of my soul. Galuppi is teaching a 6-week class on Catholicism at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Endicott. It has been fascinating learning the history of the Catholic Church. It s like finding out information about your grandparents that you didn t know. Since we are all one body in Christ, it really is learning our parish family history! He started the class with the early church just after Christ died, and over the weeks has talked about how the church changed over time. Certain things remained the same, and other things changed. This past week we learned about Vatican II. Many of you lived through that, and know first hand how it felt to come to church that week when the altar was turned around and the Priest faced the congregation and spoke in English! I was surprised to learn how many Bishops from around the world were there to give their opinion and talk about their parish needs. If anyone would like to read my copy of the book used in this course just let me know. We have had some fun things going on in our parish this week. Over 10 adults enjoyed the card party. If laughter is the best medicine, we should all be feeling pretty good! Bible Study on Thursday mornings continues to be a wonderful time to learn and also share our life stories. We have 5 more weeks with the study on Matthew. The Sunday class is going to take a 2-week break over Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday, but will resume on Sunday April 12 at 9 am. Lorraine Detweiler and her brother from Rapp signs put in the Plexiglas panels of the TV cabinet in the social hall. It is a really beautiful stained glass design. Many thanks to Rapp Signs for donating this nice addition to our redecorating project. Thank you also to Mariruth Kim for coming in to polish the brass in the Sacristy. We are all ready for Holy Week and Easter. I ll close with some thoughts from Father Galuppi. If you feel that you are just going through the motions at Mass, try to come in sometime by yourself and sit in the presence of Jesus. How about Adoration on Thursday evening? The red altar candle is always lit to remind us of his presence. Take time to fall in love with Jesus. Happy Holy Week!
