5 August 9, 2015 Father s Notes Gossip When does injury to another person by true gossip become sinful? If the information is strictly true and has taken place, where is the injury? In my experience as a priest, no sin of speech is more destructive to our social relationships than the one you mention - and the feeling that simply because a thing is true about someone else, we are free to say whatever we like about it, whenever we like, and to whomever we like. One who thinks and acts this way is grossly in error. When the topic of our loose gossip is true, we re dealing with the sin of detraction & insult. To lie about others, attributing to them faults and bad actions we know are untrue, is even worse, a sin of calumny or slander. One commits the sin of detraction when he makes known the faults of another without a very good reason for doing so. It can be a serious moral offense if it does great harm to that other person s reputation by having his other faults spread about when they otherwise would not be. The same sin is committed when the other person is refused ordinary decency & respect, whether face to face in private, or in public. Even when the other person s faults are public knowledge, it can be a sin against charity to speak unnecessarily about those faults. Occasionally there may be good reasons to tell another s faults. It is wrong, though, to imagine that just because a story about another is true, one is at liberty to spread it around. A person s good name is among his most precious possessions, and the fact that one gets a kick out of being always there with the latest tidbit is no justification for tarnishing that good name. A person s faults are a matter between himself and God. The rest of us should keep our noses out. Scripture has many strong condemning words for gossips. In Ps. 101: The slanderer of his neighbor in secret - him will I destroy. St. Paul recognized the poisonous effect of this kind of conversation. His advice to Titus is still valid: Tell them not to speak evil of anyone. This means in blunt language: If you can t say something good about someone, keep quiet. From Catholic Q & A by Fr. John J. Dietzen Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 3 The Sacrament of Matrimony Part II 340. What does the Old Testament teach about marriage? God helped his people above all through the teaching of the Law and the Prophets to deepen progressively their understanding of the unity and indissolubility of marriage. The nuptial covenant of God with Israel prepared for and prefigured the new covenant established by Jesus Christ the Son of God, with his spouse, the Church 341. What new element did Christ give to Matrimony? Christ not only restored the original order of matrimony but raised it to the dignity of a sacrament, giving spouses a special grace to live out their marriage as a symbol of Christ s love for his bride the Church: Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the Church (Ephesians 5:25) Are all obliged to get married? Matrimony is not an obligation for everyone, especially since God calls some men and women to follow the Lord Jesus in a life of virginity or of celibacy for the sake of the Kingdom f Heaven. These renounce the great good of Matrimony to concentrate on the things of the Lord and seek to please him. They become a sign of the absolute supremacy of Christ s love and of the ardent expectation of his glorious return. from the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church Morning Prayer Lord your will is all-powerful, but you have made us with wills also. Our wills can be exercised freely only to give you glory. When we pray Your will be done, we ask that our decisions be pleasing to you, that our wills be in harmony with yours. We are rebellious at times, and act defiantly. Help us to be meek and humble, and to walk in your ways. Amen. Food For Thought: As Catholic, voting citizens Know Your News: Without debate, without criticism, no Administration and no country can succeed - and no republic can survive...that is why our press has protected by the First Amendment - the only business in America specifically protected by the Constitution - not primarily to amuse and entertain, not to emphasize the trivial and the sentimental, not to simply give the public what it wants - but to inform, to arouse, to reflect, to state our dangers and our opportunities, to indicate our crises and our choices, to lead, mold, educate and sometimes even anger public opinion. John F. Kennedy, first Catholic President

6 Everyone is invited to join us to pray the rosary on Thursday mornings at 8 am. Still looking for a new teacher for the 6th grade class of religious education. This is a wonderful group of youth who aren't little kids anymore, but aren't snarly teenagers yet either! Please consider spending 1 hour a week helping to plant seeds of faith to the future leaders of our parish! Call Kathy Nichols or the church office if you are interested. There will be a catechist meeting on Wednesday, August 19th at 6:30 pm. If you haven t come early to Mass to watch the DVD presentation on the meaning of the parts of the Mass, try it next week! So far we ve learned why we say the Sign of the Cross, why we sing the Gloria, the biblical history of even saying, Peace be with you, and lots more! Fascinating facts on the beauty of the Catholic Mass! The Saturday session begins about 3:40 p.m. and the Sunday session begins about 9:55 a.m. "33 Days till Morning Glory" Home Retreat. If you started this do-it-yourself retreat this summer, we hope you are enjoying the daily reflections. Find comfort in knowing that you are among friends who experienced this wonderful 33 day journey to realizing the depth and beauty of The Immaculata. When you are finished with the book, please return them to the table in the back of the church for others to enjoy. We have small prayer cards for our parishioners to join together and say A National Prayer For The Papal Visit this fall. These postcard size cards are on the table in the back of the church. Please take one per family. It's a beautiful prayer for the Pope's safety as well as the evangelization that will take place in our country. Bottle & Can Drive Remember to drop off your refundable bottles & cans in the bins next to the Rectory garage. August 1 thru September 19 donations will benefit the youth Lacrosse fund. Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 4 Dear friends, 20 members of our church took home the do-ityourself retreat book called, 33 Days to Morning Glory. I want to encourage those who thought it seemed to long of a book for a busy summer, to try it. The 33 days part refers to the days of preparation and the morning glory part best captures what Marian Consecration is all about: A new way of life in Christ. The act of consecrating oneself to Jesus through Mary marks the beginning of a gloriously new day, a brand new morning in one s spiritual journey. It s a fresh start and it changes everything. as Father Michael Gaitley says in the book. You can start the 33 day retreat anytime, but he advises to start it so that you end on a feast day. On page 19 in the book is a chart that breaks down the starting dates and feasts. The retreat itself consist of short 2 page reflections on the lives of St. Louis de Montfort, St. Maximillian Kolbe, Blessed Mother Teresa and St. Pope John Paul II. I am enjoying learning the history of this consecration and was impressed that so many of our Pope s believed in the power of Marian Consecration. You might like the challenge and the opportunity for some spiritual reflection each day. There are a few books on the back table for anyone to enjoy. When you are done, please return them for others to use. Father Lupa is having a special Mass to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption for Chenango County. He has chosen St. Josephs in Oxford as a central location for all the parishes in our cluster, at 12:00 noon on Saturday August 15. This would be a nice time to say your prayer of consecration if you choose. Just let Father know if you attend that Mass and wish to end your retreat in this way. Please know that our parish has been busy planning for a terrific fall for you and your family. There are lots of quarterly committee meetings coming up, so take the bulletin home and add the dates to your calendars. Thank you for being here today and making ICC your parish home. Peace! ~Mary Wentlent Many thanks for the gift to the parish of beautiful rose vestments for the Priests to wear on Latare Sundays. The vestments were given in memory of the Mulvey and Lusuriello families.
