Keep this year s graduates in your prayers. Our GCHS Graduating Seniors are: Morgan Ayers, Luke Erickson, Jonathan Healy, Bridget Kenyon, Jessica Ketzak, Michael Mulderig, Claire Nolan, Emma White. GCHS Baccalaureate will be held in the high school auditorium on Tuesday, June 20 at 7 pm. The Feast of Corpus Christi, or the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ (as it is often called today), goes back to the 13th century, but it celebrates something far older: the institution of the Sacrament of Holy Communion at the Last Supper. The Feast of Corpus Christi is a moveable feast celebrating the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. It is one of the ten Holy Days of Obligation in the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church. In some countries, however, including the United States, the celebration of Corpus Christi (and thus the obligation to attend Mass) has been transferred to the following Sunday that is, one week after Trinity Sunday. If you brought food for an event please check in the social hall for your dish. There are also some vases available for anyone to take.

Bottle & Can Drive on Saturday, July 8, from All proceeds will benefit a Peace Corps project to build a boy s dormitory in Tanzania, Africa. Most children in remote locations of Africa cannot attend school unless they are able to live in a dormitory on the school grounds. All proceeds from this drive will go to this project. If you can help with sorting cans please sign up in the vestibule. Sight and Sound day trip- Tuesday July 18. The bus will leave ICC at 6:00 am. A family in need could use two bikes for kids to enjoy this summer. Girl age 10 and boy age 5. Wonderful kids that could use a helping hand. Please call the parish office if you can help. Each year our Administrator, Msgr. Putano, helps the parishes in the Southern Tier honor our youth of the parish with a Celebration of Youth Award. This year s recipients are Sophia Brown and Luke Erickson. Sophia will be a senior in high school next year and has assisted with our CCD classes for several years. This past year she was co-teacher with Marian Giannetto in the Kindergarten and first grade class. Sophia has a real gift for showing each child they are important. She is kind and gentle and takes this role of planting the seeds of faith in our youngest students to heart. Luke Erickson is a graduating senior and participated in the Mass last week in our yearly Graduates Mass. Luke assisted in teaching the 5th grade class this year along with Mr. Jeff Artman. Luke gave a calming presence to this active class of boys, and gave witness to the importance of learning about our faith. Both Luke and Sophia have also been active members of the parish helping with everything from the Lasagna Dinners to picking up the Christmas Tree for the parish from the local tree farm. St. Malachy s Parish is hosting a retirement reception for Fr. Lester Smith on Sunday, June 25 from 1:30 to 3 PM at the parish hall. It will be a cookie and punch reception, and all are welcome to come and wish Fr. Lester well in his retirement. Fr. Lester has made it plain that there be no gifts. If you still wish you could donate to a charity in his name, i.e. food pantries, Catholic Charities, Holy Family School, the Cathedral Restoration Fund. The Nativity of St. John the Baptist...is one of the oldest festivals in the Christian church. The life of St. John the Baptist is a preparation for Jesus Christ. There are many parallels between John and Jesus. The Archangel Gabriel appeared to announce the births of both and told what to name them. Usually, the day of a saint's death is celebrated as its feast day because it marks their entrance into heaven. Two exceptions are Mary (free from sin at conception) and John the Baptist who was cleansed in his mother's womb. This feast is six months before Christmas. It is on June 24th rather than June 25th because according to the Roman way of counting, they would count back eight days from the Calends (first day of the month) and June only has thirty days and December has thirty -one. This time of year is also the summer solstice which may symbolize a lighting of the way for Jesus' coming. Eddie Komperda

5 June 18, 2017 Father Lupa s Notes Can we change parishes? My husband and I have some serious problems with our parish. In some ways we enjoy it, but we feel it s just not where the Church is today. We want to do what is right, but are not sure where we stand as far as parish membership is concerned. Is is possible to join another parish? Today the Church allows wide varieties in parish liturgies. The spirit of parishes will differ depending on how both priest & people understand the Church and what they believe a Christian community should be. Current regulations of the Church seem to recognize all these factors. Parishes are indeed generally territorial. This means that the local parish priest is responsible for the care of all the faithful in that territory. Church laws spell out those responsibilities and the care with which pastors must carry them out. The laity also has rights and obligations which are relevant here. They have the right to present their desires and needs, especially their spiritual needs, to their pastors. According to their knowledge, competence and position, they have the right & sometimes the duty to make known their views concerning the good of the church not only to their pastors but also (with respect for the common good of all) to others in that parish community or elsewhere. They are obliged to assist in the necessary works of the Church its worship, apostolic mission, charities, the care of its ministers, and it s care of the poor. They have the right to the spiritual help of the Church especially the Word of God and the sacraments, and liturgy carried out as the Church allows and prescribe to help them pursue their proper form of spiritual life and to grow in Christian and human maturity. Good and faithful Catholics might perceive these rights and duties differently from the pastoral vision and style they experience in their own local parish. The difference may be such that they feel they cannot honestly and charitably fulfill these obligations and rights in that particular parish community. Policies and attitudes today are, in practice, much more flexible. More importantly perhaps you need to reflect with some seriousness about what it means to be a member of a parish. You may be among those Catholics who feel that belonging to a parish means hardly more than where you go to Mass and place your envelope in the Sunday collection. If everyone acted on that principle, no parish would be worth much. Church law defines a parish as a specific (stable) community of Christian believers. That means that every parish is Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 3 Dear friends, This past week our Finance Committee met under the leadership of Chairperson Joe Trepa. Many thanks to Eileen Browning and Mary Dunlap for attending along with Trustees Donna Heisler and Jackie Henninge. These people are professionals in their field of work and bring a lot of knowledge about running a business to this team. Our fiscal year ends on June 30 and we will be working on next years budget soon. I am happy to say we will again receive the McDevitt Grant for use in youth and young adult Evangelization. Thank you for making your HOPE appeal pledge. Making our goal enables us to receive this McDevitt Grant. Last Saturday I attended a meeting for PCA facilitators. What s a PCA? That stands for Pastoral Care Area. It s just the group of parishes that are fairly close to each other that can work together for common goals and interest. Our PCA is the catholic churches in Chenango County and I am the facilitator of our quarterly meetings. This gathering last Saturday was led by a Deacon in the Diocese that specializes in positive group dynamics and leadership. Sister Laura Bufano organized the day and it was great to spend time discussing how we can remain positive and productive as we move forward in times of change and transition of the local parish. Many of the churches represented are without a resident priest like us. Much of the day focused on encouraging each other and remembering the goal Jesus left us with - to spread the Gospel! Change is a reality and as we transition to this new horizon, how can we not remain positive? We have so much to help us and to be thankful for. Just think of how the disciples felt? No cell phones, no to communicate, yet they helped to change the world. We can to! :-) Thank you for being here today for worship. Whatever your present state of life, the priests, staff and many other people in your parish are trying to serve you and everyone else. Liturgically and in other ways. They need your help. As a general rule, the pastor in the parish where you reside is primarily responsible for you. For a serious enough reason, however,you might register in another parish.
