5 September 6, 2015 Father s Notes The Real Presence After Mass Please explain how and when the church came to the conclusion that the Real Presence of our Lord continues after the celebration of the Eucharist. It does not seem to be logical or the purpose of the sacrament for the Lord to continue His presence outside of the Sacrifice of the Mass. From earliest decades, Christian communities understood that the Real Presence of the Risen Lord in the Eucharistic Bread and Wine endured after the Eucharistic celebration itself. This celebration might take many forms, including some apparently that did not include what we call the words of consecration in the institution narrative of the Mass. One example is the Eucharistic Prayer in the Didache (The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles) written in the first part of the second century, one of the most valuable documents we possess from early Christianity. Nevertheless in whatever form the Eucharist was celebrated, it was assumed that union with the Christian community could be enhanced if people who could not be present received the Sacred Species later. Around the year 150, the Christian philosopher and Martyr, Justin, tells how portions of the Bread from the Eucharist were taken to those who were absent. Deacons and others routinely took Communion to the sick, prisoners, and others who were not able to be at the community celebration. Another example is the Communion service during the liturgy of Good Friday. Since the year 800, Communion has been received in this ceremony using Hosts consecrated at the previous Mass. from Catholic Q & A by Fr. John J. Dietzen Morning Prayer O God, I offer you myself. You have given yourself to me - now I want to give myself to you. I give you my body that it may be chaste. I give you my soul that it may be free from sin. I give you my heart that I may always love you. I give you myself in life and in death, knowing this alone brings the happiness I seek. Amen Fr. Benedict J. Groeschel, C.F.R. Wisdom from our Catholic Tradition The proof of love is in the works. Where love exists, it works great things. But when it ceases to act, it ceases to exist. Pope St Gregory the Great, , feast day 9/3 Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 3 Prayer & Thoughts for Labor Day To St. Joseph the Worker St. Joseph, model for all who labor, pray to God for me. It is an honor to use the gifts and develop the talents He has given us. May His grace strengthen me to work with order and patience, thankfulness and joy. I pray that I may strive dutifully and conscientiously to fulfill my tasks, that my accomplishments may benefit others and serve their needs. Then may the Lord crown my efforts at the hour of death, that I may join you in praising Him, forever and ever. Amen. Hear Us, Lord, J. S.Paluch Co. For Clothing Workers O God, thank you for the clothes I am wearing today. Please send the joy of your love into the lives of those who made these clothes - especially those who may not be justly paid and treated. May those who control this industry - as well as other businesses - be just and fair to their workers. Guide me and guide retailers in making wise decisions when buying clothes. Through our actions, let us try to help people rather than hurt them. While we may be separated by thousands of miles, we are all your children. Help us to love one another as you love us. Amen. Charlotte A. Rancillo Have a safe & relaxing Labor Day weekend! Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 4 Dear friends, Sometimes when presented with a conversation, I find my best answer that evening after I ve had time to think about it. Last week I had a conversation with a friend and want to share my response with my parish family. When I was little, I believed in God and could recite the Lord Prayer easily. However, I thought God was very busy with all of the adults in the world and the poor people in other countries. My little problems seemed insignificant. Then I hit a bump in the road, on my journey to figure out what I was going to do with my life. I felt confused and lost, going around in circles of bad choices. After one evening of especially bad decisions, in silence I prayed The Lords Prayer. I immediately felt the presence of God s love, his grace. I knew that someone far greater than me was in charge of my life, and he would guide me out of the mess I was in. There were no trumpets sounding; no media shouts of this latest news. Just that still small voice I ve heard mentioned in the Sunday readings: like the Holy Spirit was saying, I got this, don t worry! I began to realize God was there all along just waiting for me to ask for help! I know now that God is capable of helping the adults, the kids, the poor people in other countries, and you and me, all at the same time! We have all been through tough times in life, whether we talk about it or not. Whether it be in church or a Bible study, if you hear something that makes you feel like you will never be that perfect, remember that none of us will ever be that perfect. We are all trying to figure out our purpose in life and how to follow the teachings of Jesus in the year 2015! This parish is here to be a place of gathering to learn all of the amazing things Jesus was sent here to teach us, to provide strength for our journey through Holy Communion. Sometimes we make poor decisions and find ourselves in a bad place in life. I firmly believe that the Holy Spirit is just waiting for us to ask for help. Thank you for being part of our parish family. We are a successful parish because of people like you! Peace!~Mary Wentlent Someone borrowed one of our stainless steel steam table pans & the lid. Please return it ASAP, we need it for upcoming funerals & dinners. Thank you.
