VIRTUS Certification Class for anyone who is interested in helping with our children's religious education program this year, or the new nursery to begin on Sundays in September. All volunteers should be VIRTUS certified. The class will meet on Saturday July 15 from 8:00-11:00 am. Please register online...if this session doesn t fit your schedule go to for a schedule of available classes in our area. Bottle & Can Drive on Saturday, July 15, from 8-11:00. All proceeds will benefit Sr. Bridget s efforts in Haiti. If you can help with sorting cans please sign up in the vestibule. Join us for a Rumble Pony baseball game! For Youth and Young Adults ages 16-29: The Church wants to hear from you! The Vatican has launched an online, anonymous survey for youth and young adults. All between the ages of are invited to participate and answer questions regarding their state in life, society, and which topics - promoting peace, defending human life, evangelization, defending truth, the environment - they feel are most urgent for the Church to address. To participate, go online to the Synod Questionnaire site, and change the language to English before beginning. Devotions to St. Ann The Church of the Holy Trinity is once again offering an annual devotion to St. Ann. Formerly offered as a nine-day novena, this year they will offer three days of devotion. This year s dates are July 24, 25, 26. A reception will be held at the close of the Novena on Wed., July 26th. They are pleased to welcome Rev, Christopher Seibt, parochial vicar at Sts. GAC Ecumenical Picnic: Sunday, July 30 th at the Lion s Park pavilion from 11 am to 2 pm. It will be a pot luck meal with GAC providing the drinks lemonade, iced tea and water. Each person is asked to bring their table service, food to pass, and lawn chairs (for comfort). Men In Black Softball Game On August 13th at 6pm, the Men In Black team of priests and seminarians will play a softball game against the youth from Our Lady of Good Counsel in Endicott, at Glendale Park in Endicott. 5 July 9, 2017 Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 3 Father Lupa s Notes History of Celibacy In the light of the present controversies concerning celibacy in the priesthood, do we have any examples of a celibate life in the Old Testament? And when was celibacy for the priesthood made mandatory in our Church? To my knowledge, the only major Old Testament figure who was celibate was the prophet Jeremiah, who lived around the beginning of the destruction of Jerusalem & the Babylonian exile. He was told by the Lord not to marry as a sign to the people that children then being born would die in the tragedies to come. The very idea of a celibate life for men or women was generally repugnant to the Hebrew culture as it was to most cultures at that time. For a woman to be unmarried & childless was shameful. For men & women, marriage & a house filled with children was seen as a mark of God s blessing. The first general law in the Western Church obliging the clergy to a celibate life appeared in the later part of the 4th century through the decrees of several popes beginning with Pope Damasus & local councils. During the next 700 years, the marriage of priests, deacons & bishops was unlawful in the Western Church. The movement toward a clerical celibacy culminated in the 12th Century at the First & Second Lateran Councils, when such marriages were considered not only illicit but also invalid. Much later, at the Council of Trent in 1563, the law of clerical celibacy was reaffirmed. However, against enormous opposition, the council declared that priestly celibacy was a matter of church law, not divine law. This means that the Church could change its legislation concerning celibacy and priest would no longer be obliged to observe it. The Church did this for deacons at Vatican Council II when it instituted a married permanent diaconate. The road of clerical celibacy has been rocky though the centuries, but it seems clear the Church is not prepared to alter easily a practice so much a part of its life for the past 17 centuries. Fr. John J. Dietzen, Catholic Q & A The Sanctuary The word comes from the Latin Sanctuarium, a holy place, a shrine. It is the area in Catholic Churches where the Altar Table, Ambo (pulpit) and Celebrant s Chair are found & oftentimes, the Tabernacle & Sanctuary Lamp. In the sanctuary, priests, deacons, & bishops lead the church community in prayer & divine worship. It is here the Word of God, the Sacred Scripture is proclaimed by the Lector & ordained clergy & its explanation & application in the Homily is delivered. Traditionally the sanctuary was divided from the nave of the church by being elevated in some way & sometimes by a railing. Dear friends, For some, summer brings vacations and with vacations comes time with family. My family reunion last week involved folks from NY, GA, NC and Miss. There was a lot of porch sitting and conversations about life. The younger people talked about their college plans, sports, and school activities for next year, what career they wanted; their future. The older people talked about their grandchildren, an old letter found from grandpa, and who remembers the funny story of great Aunt Sybil; their past. It s funny the way this moment in time can get consumed with either the past or the future. I took a walk one day and thought of our parish family. Are we consumed with the past or the future? Do we dwell on 36 years ago when this church first moved out from town? How about 4 years ago when Father Currie would end every Mass with a joke of the day? Today is a new day! Tomorrow is a story that hasn t even happened yet. We can make tomorrow whatever we want it to be! So where is ICC? I m excited for our future! If you look around at Mass you will see people who have been coming to this parish all their life. You will also see new people who have just joined this year. Some folks are visiting, trying to decide if they want a parish family or not! Please reach out to those new faces and welcome them with a smile. Without a resident Priest, we rely heavily on each parishioner to find some way to help-out; as part of the liturgy team, the choir, the youth group, or another ministry. Take a look at the visitor table in the vestibule and take home a volunteer sheet that list all the ways to get involved. I promise that you will make a group of new friends that will laugh with you, work hard with you, and pray with you. This parish is made up of some of the greatest people in the area. The way our parish family worked together these past few weeks ministering to grieving families who lost family members is a testament to how strong we are.
