5 July 12, 2015 Father s Notes The Essential Needs of The Heart I am the Bread of Life; whoever comes to Me will never hunger, and whoever believes in Me will never thirst. John 6:35 We can come to believe that in Jesus we will never hunger or thirst again only if we accept that real life is a lot simpler than we allege. Most of us get caught in the frenzy of daily living & conclude that this is what life is all about. Jesus spoke endlessly about the importance of love, of not living for possessions, of simplicity, and of living in the service of others. The genius of Christianity is that it does have all the answers to the essential needs of the human heart. Concentrate on what is essential in your life. Don t exaggerate your needs. Realize that you make life complex with inflated expectations, and complicate it by turning luxuries into necessities. What do you really need to be happy? Simplify. Try making love the one rule for dealing with others. Trust that God loves you and cares for you with infinite compassion, even in the smallest details. If you can live with the essential and not be intimidated by things that don t really matter in life, Jesus claim that you will never hunger or thirst again is not simplistic at all. Michael R. Kent, Bringing The Word to Life. Prayer of Thanksgiving O God, we thank you for this earth, our home; for the wide sky & the blessed sun, for the salt sea & the running water, the everlasting hills & the never resting winds, for trees & the common grass underfoot. We thank you for our sense by which we hear the songs of birds, & see the splendor of the summer fields, & taste of the autumn fruits, & rejoice in the feel of snow, & smell the breath of spring. Grant us a heart wide open to all this beauty; & save our souls from being so blind that we pass unseeing when even the common thorn bush is aflame with your glory, O God our creator, who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen. Walter Rauschenbusch Wisdom from our Catholic Tradition While you are proclaiming peace with your lips, be careful to have it even more fully in your heart. St. Francis of Assisi Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 3 Communion on the tongue? When and why did the Church originate received Communion on the tongue? It does not seem likely that the bread was distributed in this manner as the Last Supper. You are right. Communion was received in the hand for about the first 1,000 years of Christian history. It was only in the late Middle Ages, generally in the 10th-11th centuries, that the change was made, about the same time that the use of unleavened bread became common in the celebration of the Eucharist. The reason seems to have been a feeling that receiving directly in the mouth was somehow more reverent. By this time, the practice of receiving Communion very infrequently, perhaps once a year or less, had become well accepted. Reception of the Eucharist by anyone but the priest had become so rare that missals of that period don t even mention Communion for lay people. Related to this decline, various customs developed with the intention of emphasizing the separation & distance between God (Jesus Christ & our selves. Receiving Communion on the tongue was one of them. The elevation during Mass, introduced into the liturgy much later was another. For the same reasons, a sense of reverence as well as history, inspired a return to Communion in the hand in the 20th century. Sticking out one s tongue is not usually considered a sign of respect in our age; extending one s hand was again seen as a sign of openness & acceptance of the gift God gives us in the Holy Eucharist. Our present ritual for receiving in the hand is patterned after that prescribed in Jerusalem Catechese about the year 350 AD. Not everyone has the same feeling about this, of course, so the Church today provides the option for each communicant to receive in the hand or on one s tongue. Fr. John Dietzen from Catholic Q & A A Convert s View Church history paints a very different picture of the ancient Christians from what I had learned in the Church of Christ from sincere, but sincerely wrong, teachers and preachers. I discovered through studying Scripture and the writings of the early Church Fathers that the Holy Spirit did indeed guide the Church into all Truth and that the Apostles and their successors spread this Truth throughout the world by means of the Catholic Church, which grew despite the many persecutions that came against her. Jeff Childres, Church of Christ member & convert to the Catholic Church
6 "Behold, your mother." From the Cross, our suffering Savior tenderly places each of us personally into the hands of His mother. Father Michael Gaitley has created a Do-It-Yourself Retreat that prepares us for Marian Consecration. He reminds us that the heart and hands that nurtured the Christ are the same heart and hands that nurture us. This do-it-yourself retreat touches on the inspiring life of St. Louis de Montfort and the personal journeys of outstanding modern-day Christian models like St. Maximilian Kolbe, Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, and Blessed John Paul II. 33 Days to Morning Glory is a moving and transformative journey into the loving and maternal heart of Our Blessed Mother. Our parish has 25 books available to loan anyone interested in the 33 day retreat. You can start the retreat whenever you chose, reading the short chapters and reflecting each day on your own. We are suggesting that you begin on July 13, so that you end the retreat on August 15, which is the Marian Feast day of her Assumption. There is a chart in the book with other suggested start & end dates. When you are finished with the retreat, simply return your book to the parish office so that others can appreciate and understand more fully their own unique and unrepeatable relationship with Our Blessed Mother. Any questions please see Mary Wentlent. A 5K Walk / Run to benefit the outreach ministries of the Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus. Sunday, July 19, 2015: Check in 12:00 (Noon) - 12:45 pm. The concept of working as a team was something I had to learn in other ways. I did have consistent positive advice from my parents: always look for something good in difficult situations, treat others the way you want to be treated, and the importance of turning good thoughts into actions. These past few weeks, our parish has modeled what I think is a winning team spirit. We have seen several members of our parish family pass on to be with our Heavenly Father. Parish friends made home visits, gave rides to church and errands, made sure they received Holy Communion, loved them with the gift of music at their funeral, prepared a funeral luncheon for family and friends, wrote a loving sympathy card for the family, made sure the parish grounds were clean and beautiful, spent time preparing the Sacristy and ironing the necessary burial cloths, and even helping the family pick out a favorite pair of earrings for the deceased to wear at the viewing. These are the things we are called to be doing as a parish. Reaching out to help others as the hands of Christ. Thank you to everyone who did a part these past few weeks. If you are wondering what the plan is for the front circle of lawn, Bob and Joe Hanrahan decided to clean out the dead sod areas, add fresh dirt & plant new seed on top. I am hoping that because we put the French drain in near the parking lot, we won t get so much water heading into this circle area, causing the grass to attract those unwelcome insects that caused the problem these past few years. That s quite the process, but again, another sign of parish team work! Many thanks to Kelly Browning and Lisa and Maeve Fornillo for helping me at the registration table for Vacation Bible School this week. It was a fun time for our kids to share some Christian fellowship with the other Village of Greene churches. If you have never formally joined our parish, I would like to invite you to join us! You can talk to me or one of the parish council members, or call the parish office during the week so that Audrée can give you more information. We look forward to meeting you! Have a great week! Peace! - Mary Wentlent Relay for Life - held in Norwich on Saturday, July 18 th. Leaders Jess Trepa and Alison Norton have some fun ideas planned. Please mark your calendars for this summer event.
