1 ST. FRANCIS XAVIER C.W.L. GENERAL MEETING April 14, 2015 The April meeting was held in St. Francis Xavier Large Hall with 19 members and 1 guest present. President Elaine welcomed us after Carol Sulpher led us in The League Prayer. Tom Sidney then gave a very informative talk on Mental Health & Suicide. After a delicious lunch served by Jane Valliquette, Marilyn Campbell and Lore Coyne, the meeting continued Motioned by Diane Dillon, seconded by Lore Coyne, to adopt the agenda. All in favor. MINUTES OF THE LAST MEETING Motioned by Jane Valliquette, seconded by Rita Mears, to accept the minutes of the March 10, 2014 meeting as circulated. All in favor BUSINESS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES President Elaine informed us that the photograph and write-up on the new executive had been published in the Renfrew Mercury. She also informed the members that Johanna located the address and ordered 200 copies of the postcards against euthanasia. These cards can be found at the entrances of the church along with the Information Newsletter on Euthanasia. CORRESPONDENCE Johanna Mathieu The only correspondence was an invitation to the 60 th Anniversary of the CWL Council in Quyon on May 3d. CORRESPONDENCE Elaine Turner President Elaine received the following s from Provincial Council: The acceptance list for the 2015 executive as well as a covering letter. TREASURER S REPORT Jane Valliquette gave the following report: The opening balance on March 1, 2015 was $16, and the closing balance on March 31, 2015 was $18, which includes a bank balance of $12, and 2 GIC s of $3, and $2, respectively. The gross amount made at the Rummage Sale was $ and the net profit was $ Motioned by Jane Valliquette, seconded by Joan Lemay, that we accept the financial report for March. All in favor. PRESIDENT S REPORT President Elaine expressed the following thanks: i) Thank you to all to helped out in any way with the Rummage Sale with special thanks to Co-convener, Lore Coyne, Area Leaders & Workers. ii) Thank you to Johanna and Debbie for helping President Elaine with the lists for the Rummage Sale & Spring Meeting iii) Thank you to Mary Hass for providing 2 out of 3 lunches for the workers.
2 iv) Thank you to Joan Lemay and Eve Yantha for helping with the Easter Vigil Social for Jessica Smith and Rick Bromilow. They both appreciated the social and the gifts. Rummage Sale President Elaine reminded the members that not all the monies will be given to the community. Furthermore, there is a great need in the community for this type of sale especially since the Salvation Army is no longer open. Elaine also informed the members that no CWL monies were spent on food or drink for workers thanks to the donations from workers. (We did have other costs.) Spring Meeting Our CWL Council is hosting the Diocesan CWL Spring Meeting on April 18 th. There is no fee and all are welcome. The members will set up for 100 people on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m.; refreshments should be brought in Friday night at 7:30 p.m. Anyone wishing to help with the breaks during the meeting is asked to see Rita Mears. Rita reviewed the refreshment quantities as well. Since Mary Hass asked for more squares for the lunch, Debbie Macdonald and Jane Valliquette offered to bring some. STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS Spiritual Development Carol Sulpher After Jean Spilchen read the Gospel story of The Road to Emmaus from Luke 24, Carol Sulpher led us in a discussion. Organization Debbie Macdonald Debbie reported that we have 139 paid-up members with 10 members that have not renewed their membership. Our CWL Facebook page is up and running. Debbie contacted Ontario Provincial CWL Colleen Randle for guidelines. Communications Rita Mears Rita informed us of the different resources to obtain CWL information. She also drew attention to the Companions in Prayer Card in the centre of the recent League Magazine. Rita and Debbie also delivered posters to the businesses. Education and Health Elaine Turner President Elaine submitted the following report in Martha and Susan s absence: St. Thomas the Apostle students were invited to produce posters with the theme Exploring Paths of Joy as well as the different sub-themes. St. Joseph s High School students were invited to produce poems or artwork on the same theme and sub-themes. Both principals were receptive to the contest. Letters were delivered on April 6 th and the deadline is May 1 st. Winning entries will be displayed in the Parish Hall for the 1st Communion Luncheon and at the main Church Entrance the following weekend. First Communion rosaries have been ordered and received; four more How to Say the Rosary Cards will be ordered. The 1 st Communion Luncheon Surveys have been distributed to the families. Families were ed reminders regarding the survey. First Communicants, their families, CWL Prayer Buddy participants and any interested CWL members are invited to the lunch. Prayer Buddies will make the presentation of gifts.
3 Graduation at St. Joseph s High School is June 25 th at 7 p.m. The conveners will contact Mr. Trainor that our CWL will again be giving out awards. The same procedure will apply for Renfrew Collegiate Institute. Christian Family Life Cecilia Kusluski There were 3 baptisms as well as Jane s grandchild. The gifts for older children are more suitable for their age. The cross given to Rick and the chain given to Jessica were really suitable. Cecilia also thanked everyone who came out for the prayers at the funeral home for Marguerite McIntyre. Community Life Joan Lemay Joan thanked all the members who brought donations for the Food bank to the meeting. She will ask Father if he would rather have the donations go to the rectory for the people that he helps who come to the door. Resolutions & Legislation Eve Yantha Eve encouraged all members to sign and mail the Postcards we have against pornography (Pornography Hurts) and the cards against Euthanasia to our local member of Parliament. Corresponding Secretary Angela McAdam In Angela s absence Elaine reported that Angela had sent out 2 cards of condolence and I Get Well card. Parish Activities Margaret Maloney 1. Margaret reported that the Last Friday of March Coffee Party was well attended. Willis Wren co-hosted and baked for the event. Joan Lemay will host the April 24 th Coffee Party. Volunteers are needed to host the May and June Coffee Parties. 2. Marriage Prep snacks and lunch were hosted at Our Lady of Fatima Church on March 28 th because of Marguerite McIntyre s funeral at St. Francis Xavier Church. 3. Thank you to Elaine and her helpers who hosted the reception after the Easter Vigil. 4. The First Communion Luncheon on May 3 rd will be hosted by our CWL members. Members interested in helping are asked to see Margaret after the meeting Tea & Talent Sale Final Report and th Anniversary Plans. Margaret reported that we made $5, at last years Tea & Talent Sale. Planning for the 2015 Tea is ongoing. Funeral Luncheon Report Diane Dillon Diane reported that she had 4 funerals during March. The numbers were 150, 125, 100 and 200 plates served. President Elaine thanked the funeral luncheon leaders and asked for more leaders. Motioned by Jean Spilchen, seconded by Gerry Craig, to accept all reports. All in favor. NEW BUSINESS Advertising President Elaine asked whether we should be advertising on the back of the St. Francis Xavier bulletin for a cost of $410 stating that the Knights of Columbus already advertise there.
4 Motioned by Lore Coyne, seconded by Eve Yantha that we table this discussion. All in favor. Service Pins President Elaine asked whether we should use recycled service pins to give to pin recipients. Motioned by Joan Lemay, seconded by Jean Spilchen that Service Pins awarded should by new. All in favor. June Closing Dinner The date for the dinner has been changed from June 9 th to June 16 th. We will be holding our dinner at the Renfrew Golf Club. Members were asked to check off their menu preferences on the lists on the table. Elaine also asked if we should increase the amount of our Honorarium to $100. Motioned by Joan Lemay, seconded by Carol Sulpher, that we increase our Honorarium to $100. All in favor. Diocesan Convention The Diocesan Convention will be held at St. Columbkille s Cathedral and Holy Name Parishes in Pembroke on Saturday, May 30 th. We are paying for 4 members and the president to attend. Elaine asked interested members to fill out a form on the resource table and hand it in to Elaine. May Meeting The Guest Speaker at the May Meeting will be Nancy Smith who will speak on the Prayer Shawl Ministry. Carol Sulpher and Lore Coyne will provide the refreshments. Our Lady of Good Counsel President Elaine informed the members that April 26 th is the feast of Our Lady of Good Counsel, the League s patroness. Our Mass for the feast will be April 25 th at 4:30 p.m. 50/50 Draw The 50/50 draw of $18 was won by Debra Sharp. Motion to Adjourn: Motioned by Mary Hass to adjourn the meeting at 9 p.m. All in favor. CONCLUDING PRAYER: Carol Sulpher asked us to join in saying a Hail Mary for deceased members, Willis Wren and Marguerite McIntyre as well as Claire Valiquette and Betty Brisco. This concludes my report.
