1 November 2014 IMMANUEL EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH 20 Monterey Circle, Lakewood NJ ~ visit us at: & find us on Facebook Volume 11 The Lantern I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of the life. John 8:12 Pastor ~ Rev. James McKinley Phone: (home) (cell) Pastor s jem.mckinley@gmail.com Church Secretary ~ Roxanne Rossano Phone: or secretary@ilutheran.net Greetings from the Pastor... And end and a new beginning. From its beginning on All Saints Sunday to its end on the First Sunday Of Advent, November is a very special time, a time to think of our response to God's gracious call. All Saints Sunday reminds us of our eternal reward. Christ The King Sunday on the 23rd is both the end of the Christian calendar year and a time when we traditionally think about our response in the new year about to begin. For that reason many churches including our own choose this Sunday to ask members to think about their stewardship, to fill out a commitment card estimating what we hope to give to the work of God's Church in the coming year. Having done that we enter the new year with hope and expectation on the first Sunday of Advent. A Congregational meeting will follow the service on the 23rd. In the same way that we are asked as individuals to estimate our giving, we will as a congregation be asked to accept and commit to a budget for the coming year. 3 Volume 11 Page 3 DID YOU KNOW? Hildegard Speelman has made close to 100 hats this year for those in need. After she crafts the hats she delivers them to Jim Mechtel, who delivers them to Your Grandmother s Cupboard. We took a picture of Hilde at church with just a few of the hats she has made. We asked Jim to tell us a bit about Your Grandmother s Cupboard and how the people of Immanuel might be able to help. Here are his words: Your Grandmother s Cupboard is a volunteer organization that distributes clothes and coats to those in need. I am not a board member or staff, but a supporter and helper. I do provide a website for them - YGCNJ.org. Immanuel has supported this organization in many ways: Donations of coats on a scheduled project several times. Donations of clothes from many different members, many times. Donations of hats made by Hildegard many times. Donations of clothes, household items, and other items from members estates. Donations of money in the name of Immanuel. Hilde Speelman For those who do not know about them, here is a brief account. The organization started about 10 years ago to answer a need for those who were homeless and lacking clothing. It found Minister Stephen Brigham and the Tent City and brought help to them: clothes, food, and camping supplies. It then went to food cupboards and faith kitchens on a scheduled basis providing clean clothes for men and women in sorted sizes. Hurricane Sandy brought a new challenge. Clothes came in from all over the country. Now, those displaced by the storm got dresses and suits proper for work. After a year the challenge was to help with household items as they moved from the hotels back into their repaired homes. Their effort continues with visiting the faith kitchens and food cupboards in every county in New Jersey, and they are adding new locations. Satellite operations have formed to reduce travel and costs. Cont. on pg. 4
4 Volume 11 Page 4 Cont. from pg. 3 Tent City is gone, but the hundred or so former residents only have a solid roof over their heads - no other support. They and thousands of others still need clothes and coats. Their donations have drastically dropped especially the financial ones. This is no surprise as has happened to all churches and organizations. The big givers grants are almost gone. Now is the time for churches and members with small regular donations to come to their aid. It can be a secret work that Christ said to do in secret that my Father in Heaven will see. Thrivent members can add them to their Choice awards. *Your Grandmothers Cupboard* 173A West 37 Highway (Roslyn Plaza) Toms River, NJ Website: < Phone: Fax: What can Immanuel do for them? Pray and pray hard. What Clark has done is unique and it is only in New Jersey. Pray that we can begin to establish similar groups in every state (much like Habitat structure). Pray that we can find a leader to be ready to replace Clark (he is 90, but he admits he will not live forever). And pray for me - I tend to get discouraged at times when repeating their message. May God bless you, Jim Jim Mechtel Bringing Holy Communion to our homebound members is an extension of our weekly worship. If you are unable to come to worship at Immanuel and would appreciate being put on the list of homebound members, please notify the church office so that the Pastor and the members of the Visitation Team can bring the sacrament to you. We want to make sure that those who wish to receive communion and are unable to get to worship are cared for.
