5 April 5, 2015 Father s Notes Jesus brothers and sisters A non-catholic friend is attending a series of talks on the Bible. She reports that in this class she is told that the Blessed Virgin Mary had other children born to her after Jesus. I went to Catholic school and never heard of this. Is this true? Students of the Bible, including today the vast majority of Protestant scholars, agree that neither the books of the New Testament nor other early Christian writing offer any substantial evidence that Mary had other children besides Jesus. It is impossible to deal with al traditional arguments to the contrary, but none of them, when examined carefully, offer basis for a claim that Jesus had brothers and sisters. The extreme care that the writers of the Gospels of Matthew and Luke take to insist that the conception of Jesus was accomplished by a special intervention of God, certainly indicates a Gospel bias in favor of the virginity of Mary - a bias which would be overcome only by some pretty strong evidence. Perhaps the text most commonly brought forth to claim that Mary had other children is Matthew 12:47, which speaks of some of the disciples as brother of Jesus. This apparent problem dissolves when one realizes that the Jews of Jesus time had one word that covered all kinds of kinships, from bother or sister to distant cousins. When this particular Aramaic word ( aha ) is used to designate the relationship of some individuals to Jesus, it requires quite a stretch of meaning to conclude that they are his brothers and sisters in our sense of the words. Because the perpetual virginity of Mary was commonly taught by the great teachers in the church from the very earliest decades after Christ, the church has long held that Mary was a virgin also after the birth of Christ. She therefore bore no other children after Our Lord. Fr. John J. Dietzen, Catholic Q & A Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it. Luke 11:28 Am I merely an admirer of Jesus or am I a disciple? Both the admirer and the disciple stand in the crowd listening to Jesus. The admirer lets Jesus words influence her to a certain extent, but the disciple allows Jesus words to burn within her and bring her into a closer relationship. Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 3 While the admirer agrees with Jesus that the world is a sinful place, the disciple grieves over her own sinfulness, accepts God s forgiveness and endeavors to change. The admirer gives thanks for all God s many gifts, while the disciple is prepared to turn gratitude into action by sharing God s gifts with the deprived. Both grieve over Jesus suffering, but the disciple walks in Jesus footsteps, willingly carrying her own cross. Both acknowledge that they are weak earthen vessels, but while the admirer guards her own security, the disciple is prepared to be broken for others, thus revealing divine love. Jesus, I want to be your disciple rather than just an admirer. Help me to respond faithfully in all my duties as your disciple. Sr. Peter Dupreé The Church s Hymn of Praise, The Te Deum You are God: we praise You; You are the Lord: we acclaim You; You are the eternal Father: All creation worships You. To You all angels, all the powers of heaven, Cherubim and Seraphim, sing in endless praise: Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of Your glory. The glorious company of apostles praise You. The noble fellowship of prophets praise You. The whiterobed army of martyrs praise You. Throughout the world the holy Church acclaims You; Father, of majesty unbounded, Your true and only Son, worthy of all worship, and the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide. You, Christ, are the King of glory, the eternal Son of the Father. When You became man to set us free You did not spurn the Virgin s womb. You overcame the sting of death, and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers. You are seated at God s right hand in glory. We believe that You will come, and be our judge. Come then, Lord, and help Your people, bought with the price of Your own blood, and bring us with your saints to glory everlasting,. Surrexit Christus Hodie! Alleluia!

Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 4 Dear friends, I remember going to an Easter Sunrise service when I was a teenager in Atlanta, led by my Dad. I was one of those teenagers that usually enjoyed sleeping in most of the morning on the weekends, but this morning, somehow I was up at 5:30 am. As we stood in the misty daybreak, my Dad began his magical way of storytelling that brought me right back to that first Easter morning, 2000 years ago. When he finished, a single guitarist began to play, See the sun rise, open up your eyes, today is the very first day Watch the morning come, now the night is done, yesterdays so very far away! I felt like I was right there, watching the stone being rolled away. As an adult, I ve learned that the words to this song and Easter morning should inspire each of us to let go of negative things in our past and celebrate this day as the first day of the rest of our lives! Our parish has bumped along on some rough patches in the road, but we are moving forward with some positive minded, amazing people! It is astounding the number of people who volunteered their time to help with our parish hall face lift! We now have a beautiful chair rail, freshly painted walls, new levolor blinds, and a game table for the youth. And the smart TV on the wall is up and ready for use as not only a movie screen but for live streaming Diocesan events, power point presentations and conversations/meetings with other parishes in our pastoral care area through Skype. The beautiful cabinet with colorful paneled doors encloses the TV and is a beautiful focal point of the room. Thank you to everyone who helped! Many thanks to all the work done by Jean Stevens who orchestrated the many volunteers for Palm Sunday and Holy Week. She made phone calls, greeted our visitors, made list after list, coordinated the linen care with her Sacristy angels, met with Father Lupa several times to make sure things were just perfect for our parishioners, and made sure our altar servers, Eucharistic ministers and lectors knew exactly what their job would be at Mass. (Did I mention her skill with an iron getting candle wax out of the carpet?) We are truly blessed to have such a giving and loving Sacristan, in Jean. Please give her a hug and a thank you when you see her. Thank you for spending Easter with our parish! You are an important part of our parish family! Peace!~Mary Wentlent
