Parish Office will be closed Monday, May 26 for the Memorial Day Holiday. What is Pentecost? Pentecost commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Blessed Mother and Apostles, fifty days after the Resurrection of Christ. Pentecost was a turning point for the early Church and it marked the beginning of the first evangelization. Where the Apostles had been timid and unsuccessful doing the Lord s work, the Holy Spirit empowered them with many gifts and they began to proclaim the Good News starting with their fellow Jews and then turning their evangelization efforts to the gentile nations throughout the Roman Empire. The Holy Spirit continues to move the Church to action today, inviting us to share the love and salvation of Jesus Christ with others. The Total Expenses include salaries, utilities, accountant fees, Holy Family School, CCD expenses, insurance, and the new lawn mower - with funds raised in the previous months Remember St. Paul s advice: God loves a cheerful giver. 3 May 24, 2015 Scrap Metal Drive - Tuesday, May 19 through Sunday, May 31. Place your donations in the rolloff next to the parking lot. All proceeds to support our Building & Grounds projects. Youth Groups: Middle School Youth Group Relay for Life event, held in Norwich on Saturday, July 18 th. Leaders Jess Trepa and Alison Norton have some fun ideas planned. Please mark your calendars for this summer event. Next planning session June 13, 5:30-8:30 in the Pavilion. Drop your refundable bottles & cans off at the bin over by the Rectory garage anytime. The proceeds go toward our youth events Sight & Sound Theatre s production of Joseph. Tuesday, July 14. Tickets are $10.00 per person, please send your payment to the Parish Office by June 1st. All the seats are filled but we have a waiting list in case someone cancels. Depart ICC 6:15 am, arrive in Lancaster for the 11 am show. Last week at the Circle of Friends meeting, Mary Lademan offered to send a little Sunshine to parishioners who are sick or just feeling under the weather. Let the Church Office or Mary know if you have a friend or loved one who could use a note of encouragement or small flower bouquet sent to their home. May & November we cover the hours at the Pantry. Meals On Wheels ICC covers deliveries for August & February: Mon, Wed, Fri, 11:15am. Our Brother s Keeper We take donations of CLEAN blankets, quilts, sheets, towels, batting & fiber fill. & yarn Please bag the items for pick-up. Call Rita Twice per year we hold a sleeping bag assembly workshop. Everyone is welcome to participate! St. Pauly Textile collection shed in our parking lot. Learn Greene Area Churches Scholarship Fundraiser Each year the Greene Area Churches gives out scholarships to seniors who are active in their churches and community and going on to college. The funds for these scholarships come from the profits of the chicken food tent on Labor Day. As you know, the weather has a lot to do with how well our Labor Day celebration is attended. With careful planning, the Greene Area Churches has been able to continue giving these scholarships with your help each year. On May 30-31, we are asking for your help by donating to the Love Offering for the GAC scholarship fund. Checks may be made out to Greene Area Churches and scholarship fund on the Note line. 5 May 24, 2015 Father s Notes Fear of Death, Fear of Life Has it ever struck you that those who most fear to die are those who most fear to live? That in running away from death we are running away from life? What is death? A loss, a disappearance, a letting go, a saying good-bye. When you cling you refuse to let go, you refuse to say good-by, you resist death, and even though you may not realize it, that is when you resist life too. For life is on the move and you are stuck; life flows and you are rigid and frozen. Life carries all things away and you crave for stability and permanence. So you fear life and you fear death. When you have no fear of losing anything, then you are free to flow like the mountain stream that is always fresh and sparkling and alive. Do you want a way to measure the degree of your rigidity and your deadness? Observe the amount of pain you experience when you lose a cherished idea or person or thing. The pain and the grief betray your clinging, do they not? You never took the time to seriously consider that all things change and pass away and die. Fr. Anthony de Mello, S.J. The Way of Love Unfamiliar Words in Mass Dewfall: It is a word used in the current Eucharistic Prayer II. Is so far as some have said that they are unfamiliar with the term, a little explanation is in order. In the Old Testament, 3 things are noted about it: it comes down quietly in the morning as moisture on the grass; it indicates that the day will be beautiful; and, don t take it for granted, but thank God for the wonder of it all. The word Consubstantial, found in the Nicene Creed which is recited at weekend Masses, is a venerated word from the early Church. It is used to describe the relationship of the Three Persons of the Trinity. It means that the three are of the same (con) substance. Now I discover I need fewer things. Life gets cluttered with too much stuff. I ask for the pleasure of enjoying without possessing. Perhaps what I ask for, Lord, is a touch of poverty, the will to say enough. Help me to strip my life excess - clean a closet, share an extra cost, find a new home for unused tools & tires, give some idle pots & pans away. As I sift through possessions, let me also abandon idle conversation & meaningless activities. In possessing less I will discover more room for you in my life. 6 Celebrate the Month of May at ICC The month of May is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. During May we will have the " Pilgrim Virgin Statue" set up in our vestibule. There are free Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet CD's available & free rosaries for anyone to have. Please help yourself to both." All during May we will be accepting donations to benefit Chenango Co. Catholic Charities Safe Dwelling. A residence providing shelter & support for adults & children who are victims of domestic violence. Some of their needs: Pillows, white bath towels & wash cloth, toys for children, twin sheet sets, cloths hangers, non-perishable food items, personal hygiene products, DVD/VHS player, discs & tapes for family entertainment. Place your donations in (or around) the bassinet in the vestibule. May is our month to cover the Greene Area Churches Food Pantry. Remember to bring in your contribution of nonperishable food stuffs to send over so our teams have a good selection to share. Information Seminar About the Permanent Diaconate Here in the Parish Hall, Sunday, June 7 from 2-4 pm. A Permanent Deacon is ordained as a Sacramental Sign of the Church, as servant in active love & justice in society, in heralding the Word of God & in celebrating the Sacraments. It s such a great way to find out what s going on in our parish and in our Diocese; especially keeping up with the changing landscape of our Diocese and in particular, our Pastoral Care Area or PCA. I received a few calls from people asking about the possibility of a change in our Mass schedule. I want everyone to know that I have been in contact with Msgr. Lang, Brother Ed Falsey and Sister Laura Bufano with the Diocese Parish Planning Team. There are still a lot of questions and concerns and they have assured me that nothing definite has been set for ICC. On the table for discussion is the possibility of us dropping our Saturday Mass in exchange for an earlier Sunday Mass. Our Trustees and Parish Council are all in favor of this change, if it happens, for several reasons. 1) It would ease the stress/burden on the elderly Priests that are traveling around the Diocese! 2) It would bring our parish together for one family meal! 3) Scheduling EM, Lectors, and Altar servers would be easier. 4) Most parishioners I have spoken to say they prefer an earlier Sunday Mass. 5) We would show the Diocese that we are a forward thinking parish and a role model for others. Whenever definite changes are decided, we will let everyone know via this bulletin, letters home, online & the local newspaper. Change is just a part of life, isn t it? We are a strong parish & I have confidence we will adjust just fine to whatever decision is made. Many thanks to Zack Urda for attending the Diocese Parish Council meeting last Saturday in Syracuse. While one of the youngest in attendance, representing their parishes, he brought back lots of good information for our parish council. Bob LaRocque held the spring Parish Council meeting for our parish last week & was re-elected as President. Francis Feldpausch was elected vice-president. It was a pleasant meeting with some positive discussion on the pastoral endeavors of our parish. Thank you Bob, Francis, Chris, Zack and Nancy for attending this quarterly meeting.
