You may also request your copy by calling or ing the Parish Office. Celebrate the Feast of Saint Blaise by having your throat blessed after both weekend Masses Feb. 3/4 by Father Paul. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church #1624, in the United States the annual blessing of throats is a traditional sign of the struggle against illness in the life of the christian. This blessing is ordinarily given during or after Mass on February 3, the memorial of Saint Blaise. We welcome Josh Royce to the RCIA program at our parish. Josh and his wife Mariah are new to the Immaculate Conception parish family. Josh is meeting with Father Paul each week to prepare for joining the church at the Easter Vigil Mass held in Greene this year. If you see Josh and Mariah please give them a hearty welcome to ICC!

Once the board is full the numbers will be randomly picked and assigned. This is an important winter fundraiser for our building and grounds projects. Please consider purchasing a square after both weekend Masses, or by calling the church office. Thank you! Spread the word to your family and friends. This is a great way for us to communicate with our parish members and well as give you all the parish happenings at your fingertips! New Chairs for the Social Hall Thank you to everyone who has stopped and looked at the new chair display in the hall. We appreciate all the great comments and suggestions. We are considering purchasing 30 vinyl padded stackable chairs for use in the hall for classes, meetings, retreats, and other events of this nature. We will also purchase about 80 vinyl padded folding chairs for use at larger functions such as luncheons. Both chairs will coordinate in color so they can be used together if needed. Donations are still being accepted. The existing chairs will be available for purchase at $5 per chair. A sign up will begin soon for this process. We continue to accept donations toward the Marion Garden. If you wish to make a donation in memory of a loved one we will order additional name plates later in the spring. Lent begins February 14 with Ash Wednesday. The Greene Area Churches Lenten Service schedule begins with our 12 Noon Ecumenical Service with ashes followed by lunch. We will also have a 6:30 pm Service with Ashes. Fr. Paul will be celebrating Mass at St. Joseph, time to be determined. If you would like to donate items for the lunch or help in the kitchen contact the parish office. Volunteer Opportunities Greene Food Pantry - We collect non-perishable foods for our local food pantry. May & November we cover the hours at the Pantry. Meals On Wheels Our volunteers make the deliveries for August & February: Mon, Wed, Fri, 11:15am. Call the Parish Office to join our team! Bottle & Can Drive - drop off your refundable items n the bin next to the Rectory garage. St. Pauly Textile collection shed in our parking lot. Donate your unwanted clothes & fabric items & ICC receives 4 cents per pound collected. A Lenten Retreat for Catholic Women Saturday, Feb. 24, 8 am - 12:30 pm at St. Vincent De Paul/Blessed Sacrament Church, 465 Clubhouse Rd., Vestal, NY. (Handicap Accessible) Registration begins at 8 am. The retreat includes: Mass with Rev. Corey VanKuren, breakfast, speaker Sr. Mary Jane Florence Athieno LSOSF, confession and Adoration. On check, note "Southern Retreat." The Altar Rosary Society of the Church of the Holy Trinity, 346 Prospect St., Binghamton, is sponsoring a sale of butter lambs, an Easter tradition. You ve made family mealtimes a high priority in your household. But now you have a problem they didn t tell you about. Eating together as a family is not always a pleasant experience. Purdue University found that eight out of 10 parents highly value mealtime together but only 33 percent of us actually do it. Why not try a conversation plan! Families eating together is a valuable and precious time that can be a moment of catechesis and authentic human development. Three common questions asked of all present at the table can help build human virtues: Name one thing you learned today (to remind them they should be learning things). What did you do this morning? (to help build memory). What are your plans for tomorrow? (to build the planning habit). How about go around and ask each person to tell his or her high and low. The high was the best part of the day, while the low was the worst. Here's an anti-snark device: employ it when the conversation gets too negative. Echoes of Faith Teacher Workshop All CCD teachers are invited to attend a special training class on Scripture sponsored by our Diocese. We will carpool up to New Berlin on Sunday, January 28 right after Mass for this class. For more information contact Gloria Straniero. The adult Bible Study on Wisdom is in its 4th week. The readings for the week of January 28- Feb.1 are the following verses: Proverbs 13:24, 14:26, 19:18, 22:6, 22:15, Sirach 6:5-7. The Sunday session meets from 9-10 am and the Thursday session meets from am. Both meet in the front classroom off the vestibule. All are welcome to join us for a session as your schedule allows. "Wisdom is the breath of the power of God." Wisdom chapter 7 A Family Perspective Today s gospel reminds us unclean spirits still haunt our families. These spirits thrive inside our grudges, punishing silence, impatience and abruptness. Today Jesus offers you the authority to cast out these spirits from your life and your family Dear friends, A few times each year we sit down with our priest and have a Liturgy Meeting. A few days ago we had our second meeting with Father Paul to discuss the Masses we offer here at Immaculate Conception. It s so interesting to see the unique perspective from Father Paul as he is such a spiritual priest! He doesn t miss an opportunity to share his thoughts on human responses to life s struggles, or explain a teaching of Jesus from the New Testament. At this last meeting we talked about how things were going so far, and one of the things Father is especially happy about is the many young people he sees each Sunday at Mass, especially at the monthly youth Mass. He tells us often that children are the future of the church! We also discussed the season of Lent. It will be different this year, because Father Paul travels to Greene and Oxford from Binghamton. His week is quite full as he celebrates daily Mass in several other Parishes in Endicott and Johnson City, as well as Seton Catholic High School. He is a busy man! Lent begins on St. Valentines Day which is February 14, Ash Wednesday. We will be burning our palms from last year during Mass on Sunday February 11. There will be a small fire pit out front, and anyone can drop their palms there. After Mass Father Paul will bless the ashes, so they can be used on Ash Wednesday. Thank you to Jim Blauvelt for helping make this possible! So back to Ash Wednesday~ as many of you know our parish traditionally host the Greene Area Churches Ecumenical Service to kick off the lenten season; a noon service with distribution of ashes followed by a soup luncheon. Father Paul is not able to get back for an evening Mass, and he has encouraged us to have a Service with Ashes that evening from 6:30-7, led by Eucharistic Ministers. This is in the process of being coordinated and we will elaborate more soon. He also is not able to travel back for evening Mass but again has encouraged us to have Stations of the Cross led by the parishioners. We have planned to have the CCD teacher, parents and children take turns leading these on Friday nights from 6:30-7. All church members are welcome, and a light refreshment will be provided by the class afterwards. We hope this will be a unique and rewarding service for our parish family as a whole. The Wednesday 12:15 Mass is a regular Mass for our church, and this will continue. We are very lucky to have this short but prayerful break in our week. Have a wonderful week. Peace!~Mary Wentlent
