5 Five Facts You Should Know About Your Catholic Faith 1. Our Faith is centered on the person of Jesus Christ who we believe and proclaim to be the divine Son of God. 2. The principle source of information about Jesus is found in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. From these four texts, the basic story of Jesus life, death and resurrection emerges. 3. The Catholic Bible contains seven additional books in the Old Testament which were used in the first centuries of the Church but are not found in Protestant Bibles. 4. St. Thomas Aquinas, one of the most brilliant scholars in all history, was referred to as the Dumb Ox because of his great size and humility. 5. The pope, the Bishop of Rome, Patriarch of the West and Universal Pastor, is elected by a secret conclave (meeting) of the World s Cardinals who are younger than eighty years of age. Pope Francis is the 265th Successor of St. Peter as Bishop of Rome. Fr. Richard Gribble, CSC, PhD Jesus is the Heart s Fulfillment I have come not to abolish, but to fulfill. Matthew 5:17 In the movie The Devil s Advocate, Al Pacino plays Satan. At one point in the movie, Satan rails against God for being antihuman and exclaims, I am the last great humanist! This is a lie from the Father of lies. In reality, Jesus is the fulfillment of the true aspirations of humanity. Jesus tells us in today s Gospel that he has not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it. He is the culmination of the yearnings of all generations and the hope of peoples down through the ages. Whether or not we are aware of it, the deepest desire of the human heart is to be filled with the infinite love of God. Jesus is that infinite love offered to us. It is easy in life to become sidetracked by things that ultimately will not satisfy. Characters in the movie were tempted by worldly wealth, power, prestige & promiscuity. But in the end, these cannot satisfy the human heart & leave it frustrated. Only in Jesus do we discover infinite love, & then we can rest. Fr. Stephen J. Rossetti Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York April 6, 2014 Wisdom from our Catholic Tradition At the time of death, when we meet God face-toface, we will be judged concerning love, concerning how much we have loved. Not concerning how much we have accomplished, but rather how much love we have put into what we hace done. In order fro love to be genuine, it has to be above all a love for my neighbor. Love for my neighbor will lead me to love for God. Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta From Stella Maris Retreat House Holy Week Retreat, 4/ Presenter Fr. George Coyne, SJ. The Triduum retreat is a special invitation to spend time apart in an atmosphere of prayer & silence so that we may enter more deeply into the Paschal Mystery. Each day of the retreat will center on the liturgical celebration. A Seder Meal will precede our dinner & the Mass of the Lord s Supper on Thursday. Private and communal prayer will be part of this retreat. Options to arrive earlier in the week & spiritual direction is also available. Offering: $ per person, includes program, single guest room, all meals Diocesan Festival Choir The Diocesan Festival Choir will assemble at the Cathedral for three events in the coming weeks. 6 Tuesday Morning Bible Study to Begin Soon Imagine how our parish would change if all of us had a profound encounter with God in Scripture. The Bible is at the heart of everything we do and believe as Catholics. A good Bible study has a way of renewing parish life, and enriching the faith of parishioners. The Bible Timeline is a fascinating study utilizing a DVD presentation by author Jeff Cavins, that takes you on a journey through the entire Bible. You will go deep into each period of salvation history and discover the amazing story woven throughout all of Scripture. Using a unique color-coded system, you will learn the major people, places, and events of the Bible and see how together they form the foundation of our faith. Join us for The Bible Timeline at Immaculate Conception Church in Greene NY beginning April 22 from 9:30-11 a.m. and continuing every Tuesday for 24 weeks. Babysitting will be available. For more information or to register for the study, contact Mary at or via mwentlent@gmail.com. Dear Parish Family Please continue to pray for Gloria Straniero, our R.C.I.A. catechumen, as she continues her journey toward full communion in the Roman Catholic Church as the Easter Vigil. Gloria &her husband Nick & their two daughters Savannah and Zabelle, attend the Sunday morning Mass. When you see them, please let them know how pleased we are to have them as part of our Parish family. This week, CRS Rice Bowl invites us into solidarity with the people of Haiti. We are encouraged to reflect on the Catholic social teaching principle, Call to Family, Community & Participation, and reminded that, as social beings, we are called to seek God together. Let us pray this week for our brothers & sisters in Haiti & all around the world, that our families & communities may be strengthened & blessed A Lenten Prayer O Merciful God, take away from my heart all selfpride and boasting, all desire to excuse myself for my sins or my wish to blame others for my faults. Rather, let me take as my example and guide Him who chose to be crowned with thorns and die for us all, your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. Patricia Newland Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page Three Dear friends, I wish you could have seen the looks of surprise on the children s faces when they came into the church hall for CCD last Sunday. Co-DRE Kathy Nichols orchestrated a Seder Meal for all of the 1-8 th graders. The tables were arranged in a large U and each place was set and ready for the meal. She had the children participate as the Mama, Papa, Son and Daughter. Mr. Nichols showed a short video on the big screen about how this Jewish ritual feast marks the beginning of the Jewish holiday Passover. Then they all participated in the retelling of the story of the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt, from the book of Exodus. Many thanks to teachers Tom Nichols, Edilu Hunt, Liz Furman, Penny Sweet, Peg Gorman, Trudy Komperda and Lorraine Detweiler for working together to make this happen. Thank you also to 8 th grader Sophia Brown for taking the pictures! We are a fortunate parish to have such dedicated teachers. Sunday afternoon, some of the members of Circle of Friends enjoyed a fun afternoon together at the Greene High School Musical Annie. It was fun talking about the 30 s, sharing stories and just enjoying this fun musical together. We are very proud of our parish youth that are members of Greene Footlights: Jennifer Urda, Matt Carlin, Katherine Klecha, Ryan & Dustin Markham, Derick Heisler, Patrick Mulderig, Megan Brown, Shannon Ketzak and Jessica Ketzak. We will be having a joint Liturgy meeting with our friends from Oxford and Father Lupa to discuss the Holy Week schedule. We will post this as soon as possible. We hope that our parish will be a place of comfort as well as celebration for all of our parishioners this Easter season. Peace!~Mary Wentlent Are you are traveling, call or visit Traveling?
