When we were baptized, we were called to share in His work. Therefore we pledge ourselves to build a community where all are welcomed, loved, needed and appreciated. If you have not yet responded to the HOPE Appeal, we ask that you prayerfully consider making a pledge to help support the needs of our diocese. For years, your gifts have helped thousands of people through the programs and ministries funded by the HOPE Appeal. Peter s Pence Collection In the second collection today, we are supporting Pope Francis in his charitable works. It supports our brothers & sisters on the margins of society, including victims of war, oppression, & natural disasters. Please be generous in today s collection. Communion Service Thursday, 8:00 am Rosary; 8:30 am Communion Service. Beginning June 28, we offer this sacramental grace on Tuesday mornings as well, following the same schedule.

3 June 26, 2016 Marion Memorial Garden Update- Many parishioners have committed to donating handmade items for the craft show in July. Some have been dropped off in the social hall. Stop by and check out the handiwork! This fundraiser will benefit the construction of the garden. We have received 3 estimates for the paver foundation and will decide soon who will construct the beautiful stone walking surface. We want it to be level and easy for everyone to navigate, even walkers and wheel chairs. If anyone wants to donate money for this garden in memory of a loved one, please fill out one of the envelopes in the vestibule or call the church office. This garden will be a beautiful place for prayer and reflection for all in our parish and community. Our parish will have a table at the Greene Craft Show this summer on Saturday, July 23. We need donated items that are hand made to sell at our table. There is a craft workshop Saturday, July 9, 9am; come help assemble some of the items we will be selling. We need items ahead of time and people to help price things, set up the booth, take a shift selling on the day of the craft show, and clean up afterwards. Please consider donating a little time for this 'fun' fundraiser! Cards & Conversation - Wednesday, June 29 10:30-12:30. Everyone is welcome to join us in the Parish Hall for a morning of fun, games & conversation followed by a light lunch. Hosted this month by Bob & Ida Hanrahan. The Canonization of Mother Theresa of Calcutta~ and an inspirational tour of Rome, Pompeii, Sorrento, Amalfi, San Giovanni Rotondo, Manoppello and Assisi. The group will leave the USA on September 2, 2016 and return September 11, The canonization is Sunday, September 4th in St. Peter s Square. The price is $3,199 for double occupancy. The price includes Airfare, Hotels, Dinners, Breakfasts, bus service, local guides, entrance fees to Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel and Pompeii, hotel city taxes, transfers and porterage in/out. Please leave your donation in the basket in the Parish Hall vestibule. May & November we cover the hours at the Pantry. We need another team member to cover the Tuesday hours in May & November. Please contact the Parish Office if you can help. Meals On Wheels Our volunteers make the deliveries for August & February: Mon, Wed, Fri, 11:15am. Call the Parish Office to join our team! Our Brother s Keeper We take donations of CLEAN blankets, quilts, sheets, towels, batting & fiber fill. & yarn. Please bag the items. Our next sleeping bag workshop will be this summer. 5 June 26, 2016 Father s Notes Ku Klux Klan A friend of mine from a southern state claims that Catholics are members of the Ku Klux Klan. I thought this was an anti-catholic group and that Catholics were forbidden to belong. The KKK was part of a wave of anti-catholic bigotry which lasted through several decades of the last century in our country. It was one of 4 or 5 major native American organizations which sprang up after the economic panic of 1819, and reacted to the large immigration of mainly Catholic Europeans. There have been two major Ku Klux Klan (the name derives from the Greek word kyklos, circle) organizations. The first, formed after the Civil War, was an extremist white supremacy organizations which at one time involved most whites in the South. Through terror, lynching, torture and other cruelties, the Klan protected white people, and opposed all reconstruction efforts of federal and local governments. This Klan finally disbanded about The second organization began during & after World War I, inspired by economic, political & social breakdown, & the growing nationalism of that period. It was an anti-black, anti-catholic, anti-jew, antiforeign movement which by the mid-1920 s boasted nearly 5 million members and exercised great political power. No one attempted to explain how Christian beliefs and practices can coexist with the policies & activities of the Klan. Fr. John J. While we respect the faiths of all citizens, or lack thereof, we, as a nation were founded on Judeo-Christian principals and moral values, as attested in this 1892 Supreme Court decision: Our laws and institutions must necessarily be based upon and embody the teachings of the Redeemer of mankind. It is impossible that it should be otherwise; and in this sense and to this extent our civilization, and our institutions are emphatically Christian...this is a religious people. This is historically true. From the discover of this continent to the present hour, there is a single voice making this affirmation...we find everywhere a clear definition of the same truth...this is a Christian nation. The United States Supreme Court in its 1892 decision in Church of the Holy Trinity vs. United States - in this 16 page decision the Supreme Court listed 87 precedents for the decision. Something to think about as our Independence Day nears Wisdom from our Catholic Tradition The Sacred Heart of Christ is an inexhaustible fountain & its sole desire is to pour itself out into the hearts of the humble so as to free them and prepare them to lead lives according to His good pleasure. Matthew 5:44 When...you see your enemies clearly, you see the lines in their faces and the way they walk when they re tired. You see who their husbands and wives are maybe. You see where they re vulnerable. You see where they re scared. Seeing what is hateful about them, you may catch a glimpse also of where the hatefulness comes from. Seeing the hurt they cause you, you may see also the hurt they cause themselves. You re light years away from loving them, to be sure, but at least you see how they are human even as you are human, and that is at least a step in the right direction. It s possible that you may even get to where you can pray for them a little, if only that God forgive them because you yourself can t, but any prayer for them at all is a major breakthrough. In the long run, it may be easier to love the ones we look in the eye and hate, the enemies, than the ones whom-because we re as afraid of ourselves as we are of them-we choose not to look at at all. 6 Save the Date- Vacation Bible School will be the week of July from 6-8:15. We will once again join up with the Greene Area Churches for a joint summer experience for our community s children. This years theme is 'Workshop of Wonders' and will feature games, songs, crafts and learning about Jesus Miracles and how to imagine and build with God. If you have grandchildren visiting, they might enjoy this fun evening of games, songs, crafts and more! Registration is at 6 pm each night and they don t need to attend each night to participate. Sight & Sound Samson Drop your check or cash payment off at the Parish Office, place it in the collection basket., etc. Receipt of payment reserves your place. We do have 1 seat available, sign-up in the vestibule, first come basis. The Social Committee met last week for their yearly planning meeting. This group plans parish wide events such as the parish picnic and the winter bingo/ chili night. Members sign up to coordinate 1 event for the year and are always looking for folks to help out. Call the church office if you are interested in helping in any way, and we will let the organizers know. Does your leadership come out of your spirituality? Fr. Charles Vavonese will be offering the Formation in Ministry course: The Spirituality of Leadership at St. Thomas Aquinas in Binghamton on Thursday evenings at 6:30 8:30 pm from July 7 th August 11 th. Cost of $35 includes tuition and books. Call STA rectory FMI or to reserve your space. This is a reminder that any individual over the age of 18, including parents, must have completed Safe Environment/VIRTUS training (includes a background check) (valid for five years) before they are permitted to travel or stay overnight on a youth church function. Church of the Immaculate Conception, Greene, New York Page 4 Dear friends, We had a very enjoyable birthday reception last Saturday after Mass for Theresa LaRocque. Mary Dunlap once again waved her magic wand and transformed the hall into a lovely party in honor of Theresa celebrating 92 yrs. in this beautiful world. Upon learning that Theresa s favorite color was blue, Mary found blue placemats, a blue hydrangea for the table, photos, a yummy cake full of icing roses, an old fashioned lemonade jar, and even laminated posters of events, celebrities and styles from the year she was born. Thank you to the great crowd of parishioners and family who attended. I m proud of our parish for celebrating the life God has given us in this way! It really is a beautiful world. The Circle of Friends enjoyed an outing last week to the movies and then lunch at Cracker Barrel. Spending time like this gives us an opportunity to get to know each other better and share family stories, thoughts and concerns. We had great conversation over lunch on a variety of topics that included our Catholic Faith. We have a nice group of Sunday altar servers and they were treated to a morning at Chuckster s Family Fun Park last week. Nine children spent the morning playing putt-putt, hitting baseballs in the batting cages, trying the climbing wall, playing aero ball and trying out the Basketball shoot n shower. Sounds like fun doesn t it? Thank you to the parents and chaperones that went along. Our class on the Spirituality of Leadership ended this week, and we really enjoyed learning about the Jesuit s unique formula for molding leaders. Being a history enthusiast, I am going to share some of this with you this summer. Speaking of summer reflections, we have a table in the vestibule with some short books you might want to take on vacation this summer. When you have some quiet time sitting on the beach, by a lake, or even on the porch of your house in the early morning, you might enjoy some spiritual reflection.
