NAME: ADDRESS: TELEPHONE: ADDRESS TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As Independence Day draws near, we think of the men and women of the military who serve with courage and competence, some far from home. How does the Church accompany them? In 1939, Pope Pius XII created an independent jurisdiction of the Catholic Church called the Military Vicariate. In 1985 Pope John Paul II created the Archdiocese for Military Services, USA. Spanning the globe and serving nearly one and a half million Roman Catholics, more than one thousand priests minister in hospitals, on military bases of all the armed forces, on ships at sea, and on the battle- ield. The AMS does not ordain priests, but accepts priests on loan from religious orders and dioceses. In 1824 a Jesuit priest named Adam Marshall enlisted in the Navy and died at sea in He was assigned as a schoolmaster, but he sought out and ministered to Catholic sailors. Twenty years later, President Polk was worried that the war with Mexico was seen as anti-catholic, so he recruited two Jesuit priests to serve in the army as chaplains. At the time of the Civil War, only about ten percent of Americans were Catholic. Military policies forced Catholic soldiers to attend Protestant services. The Church protested this rule, and many priests volunteered to become chaplains. Their witness and the courage of the Nuns of the Battle ield (several orders of sisters who assisted Civil War victims) helped temper prejudice against Catholics and pave the way for the life and ministry of this vigorous and unique archdiocese. Gospel The people said: Where did this man get all this? Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary? (Mark 6:1-6). O LORD, BE MY HELP Today we encounter readings that draw us into the mystery of suffering and death. In the past few years we have witnessed the devastation of life and property through earthquakes and hurricanes. So many lifted their lament to God, simply asking, Why? This is an honest expression of anger toward a God who we believe is the giver of life. When we lose a loved one, we can wonder why the presence of Christ is not enough to make that person rise, even from death, as did the little girl in today s Gospel passage. Again we raise our voices and ask, Why? At moments such as these, let us make the prayer of the psalmist our own: Hear, O L, and have pity on me; O L, be my helper. Let us pray that our mourning will one day be turned into dancing. Copyright J. S. 5 FAITH FORMATION NEWS Grades 1-5 The Faith Formation Team is currently looking at next year s calendar, and scheduling class times and events. Once that is settled, the registration form for the Faith Formation will be available to the parishioners. We will keep you informed here! Did you know that the Bible tells us of at least 37 miracles that Jesus gifted us with? In today s Gospel, we hear a story about one of those miracles. A man named Jairus, who was an of icial of the local Synagogue, asked Jesus to cure his 12-year-old daughter. Sadly, she died, but Jesus was able to bring her back to life. Jesus heals the daughter of Jairus What is an of icial of a Synagogue? Jairus most likely was someone with duties similar to Fr. Mark, as a pastor. He would be the one to decide who does what in the Synagogue. He may have had the responsibility for the upkeep of the Synagogue building. Whatever his responsibilities were, he was familiar with the teachings of Jesus, and reports of his healings. The Bible tells us that most of icials of the Synagogues did not like the teachings of Jesus, and did not really want him around. But in this case, Jairus risked losing his position in the Synagogue by going to Jesus, believing that Jesus could save his daughter. He was correct his daughter was saved! We don t hear what happened to Jairus or any of his family after that. What do you think may have happened? CONGRATULATIONS, ISABEL!!! Knights of Columbus Service Award. Each year, The Knights of Columbus offer an award of recognition to altar servers whose participation in ministry has continued throughout their senior year of high school. This year's recipient is Isabel Steneri for her 10 years of continuous service. We thank her and wish her well as she heads off to college in the fall. Way to go, Isabel!!

6 A FEW WORDS FROM THE PICNIC COMMITTEE In the past few years, as a parish, we have enjoyed the parish picnic as a way to come together as a community. We have also been the recipients of some extraordinary generosity (both in terms of time and effort expended) from some of our parish families. This year, we are going back to the Country School from the church grounds. The church grounds were much easier for our committee to use. In order for the picnic to return to the Country School, we are going to need some new people to step up and volunteer with some of the tasks associated with properly preparing for the picnic. Speci ically, the night before the picnic, we have trucks that need to be loaded with all the tables and tents that provide shade during the Mass and the picnic a total of 10 tents with poles and material. On the morning of the picnic, we need people to help unload the trucks and set the materials up for the picnic. At the end of the picnic, these things all need to be taken down, put back into the truck, driven back to where they come from, unloaded and put away. In the past, this has been done by a few families - it is now time for us to step up as a parish and take over this responsibility. We need your help to allow us to continue the tradition of faith and fellowship that is our annual outdoor mass and picnic please let us know if we can count on you to help us with these important tasks (and others). Your participation will insure that this annual event is not simply an event, but rather will remain a wonderful opportunity for us to worship together as a parish, forge new while renewing old friendships, and welcome all under God s great tent of community (pun intended). The Outdoor Mass and Picnic will be held on Sunday, September 23rd, with Mass at 11 AM and the picnic immediately following.
