3 Prayer Vigil for Life Eastern Illinois Catholic Newman Center will host the October 21 st Prayer Vigil for Life. Father John Titus will be celebrant for the 6:30pm Mass. Praying the Scriptural Rosary will begin at 6:00pm. The 7:30 business meeting will be held in the lounge of the Center 40 DAYS FOR LIFE Almost 1 in 3 women will have an abortion by age 45. This is a powerful reminder that Planned Parenthood is the face of abortion in our community, and we must be the face of compassion. Remember our turn to pray outside of Planned Parenthood is scheduled for Thursday, October 24 from 9-5. Sign up in the cry room for your hour. A Memorial Bereavement Mass will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2013, at 1:00pm, at St. Anthony Church. We will honor the members of St. Anthony, Sacred Heart, and St. Mary s Parish who have passed away from October 1, 2012 through September 30, 2013 in this special Mass. Everyone is invited to the Mass and the reception following in the St. Anthony Parish Center. October Committee- Tina (Tracy) Vonderheide(chair), Kathy Worman, Geannine Kessler, Shauna Curry, Patty Kessler, Jessica Closson, Connie Rosine October 12 & 13, 2013 Reflection for this weekend: In both the first reading and the Gospel this weekend lepers are cured. In both readings a former leper gave thanks to God for the healing. Both of them were foreigners who crossed a large faith and cultural distance to give thanks to God. The Alleluia verse tells us In all circumstances, give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus. Like all of us, God loves a grateful receiver. It is always nice to hear a thank you when we give a gift. This is one of the ways we can make some kind of return to the Lord. I recommend our prayers always begin with thank you. It is a way to express our appreciation. It also opens our heart to God in a way that increases our ability to receive His gifts. God wants to shower His gifts on us. It is good to always thank Him for what He has given us, even the gifts we don t perceive. Priests helping: Last weekend we had help from several priests at all three of our parishes. Msgr. Kemme was in town for the Knights of Columbus 4 th degree exemplification. He offered the 4:00 Mass at Sacred Heart and the 8:30 at Shumway. Fr. Ralph offered the 8:30 at Sacred Heart. Fr. Ken Rossowog offered the 11:00 at St. Anthony. And Fr. Frederick offered the 5:30 at Sacred Heart. All of these priests offered their help knowing that we are short on help here. Of course we are short on help because Fr. Ery was willing to help Sigel, Neoga, Green Creek, and Lillyville in their time of need. All of these priests have been a wonderful example of generosity and charity. They have been concerned about all of you and when they had an opportunity they immediately offered to help us. I am inspired by and grateful for their generosity. I can say the same about so many of you! Thanks for the many expressions of support. Thanks also for ALL the ways you sacrifice and generously give of yourself for the sake of our parish family! Rite for the Blessing of a Child in the Womb: Recently the USCCB (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) approved a blessing for a child in the womb. Since October is Right to Life Month we are using this blessing to conclude the Prayers of the Faithful at the Sunday Masses. I know that parents are not always ready to announce a pregnancy in its early months. This will allow us to offer the blessing without calling specific attention to mothers who may prefer to remain anonymous at the moment. The blessing is for the child in the womb and also the mother. It can also include fathers and family. We will use it through all of October and then periodically in the future. God bless our mothers, fathers, and families for their generosity in welcoming a new life into the world. Pope Francis: Pope Francis will consecrate the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary this October 13 th. That is the anniversary of the miracle of the sun at Fatima which occurred in In this month of the rosary let s pray with Pope Francis for the world and for peace. In Christ, Fr.Hoefler

October is the Month of the Rosary Remember we will be saying the rosary before every Mass in October. Please arrive early to participate. Rosary will start approximately 25 minutes before Mass. Parish Financial News Father Hoefler wanted parishioners of St. Mary s to know that he transferred our savings to the Diocesan savings to help us save on our ACSA goal. By doing so our ACSA goal went from $9,060 (2012) to $3,629 (2013). We are also earning 1 ½% on the money. This week in RCIA WHAT ABOUT MY SIN PROBLEM? This was the topic of the evening as we explored what sin is; what evil is (the absence of good) and what temptation is. Certainly plenty of reflection and questions to that keep everyone interested. In between this class meeting and the next time we gather we are reflecting on what are the temptations in our lives? There is still time to join the learning and discussion! Perhaps you know of someone who is curious about the Catholic faith: a spouse, extended family member, a friend, or someone with whom you have recently become acquainted. Adults from all faith traditions or no religious background at all are welcome to participate in the parish s multi-week program that begins at 7 p.m each Thursday at St. Anthony High School. Parking is on the west side of the high school and enter through door 3 on the north side of the school. Deacon Joe Defend Marriage Lobby Day at the Capitol in Springfield will be on Wednesday, October 23, from 9:00am to 3:00pm. The Catholic Conference of Illinois is joining with the Illinois Family Institute to promote a rally to preserve marriage. Senate Bill 10, which changes the state s definition of marriage from between a man and a woman to between two persons, has passed the Senate, but has yet to be called for a vote in the House. We would like to get a group to go, so call the parish office at , if you would like to attend.
