Scripture Reflection 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 12, 2015 Jesus gave the Twelve Apostles a remarkable mission. He sent them out two by two to preach repentance, to cast out evil spirits, and to heal the sick. And he made them do it in a spirit of complete dependence upon God. These men-who did not even have the witness of other apostles or saints to inspire or give them courage, and who had not yet beheld the Resurrection of the Lord-stepped out into the world with literally nothing but their faith in this man named Jesus. And look what happened! "The Twelve drove out many demons, and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them." The apostles' trust in God's power to work these miracles through their hands began with trust in God's power to provide for their own needs. This experience bolstered their faith and encouraged them in their mission. When we find ourselves questioning whether we really have the "power" to do what God wants us to do, then we ought to step back and try to depend a little more directly upon God's providence. Surrendering this element of care for ourselves allows God to meet our needs himself. And when he does, our faith will flourish too. 4 Religious Education Totus Tuus Summer Youth Camp July Totus Tuus Missionaries will be speaking at all the Masses this weekend. We still have a few openings for the 1-6 grade camp and the 7-12 grade camp. Call Geralyn if you would like to register. Confirmation Class Are you interested in receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation? Any student who will be at least 15 years of age by June of 2016 is welcome to join the Confirmation Class. Confirmation Classes will meet most Wednesday evenings beginning in September from 6:30-8:00pm. The first step to begin the process is for the student to schedule a meeting to meet with Geralyn this summer. Totus Tuus is a 1 week catechetical camp where young college students, who are on fire for the faith, teach the Catholic faith to young people. 5 ON JULY 22, 1875, THREE SISTERS OF MERCY FROM INDEPENDENCE IOWA, responded to an invitation to teach at the new St. Joseph Academy, a boarding school for girls and a parochial day school in Cedar Rapids, IA. From this early beginning, the Sisters of Mercy have served thousands in the greater Cedar Rapids area and beyond for more than 140 years through their ministries of education, healthcare, social service, pastoral care and advocacy for the most vulnerable among us. As they celebrate this milestone year, please keep the Sisters of Mercy, living and deceased, in your prayers and take a moment to offer them your thanks for their extraordinary service that continues today. PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY LAND, November 3-12, 2015 WALK WHERE JESUS WALKED with Fr. Nienhaus, Pastor of St. Patrick Parish in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This is where it all started! Visit all the sites from The Annunciation through the Way of the Cross, Crucifixion, and Resurrection. Also visit the Masada, the Dead Sea, and drive through the area where John the Baptist lived and baptized Christ. The group will renew their baptismal vows near the site Christ was baptized. Breakfast, lunch, & dinner daily, transportation by air-conditioned bus with free Wi-Fi on the bus, and admission fees are paid. All for only $4, (from Cedar Rapids). He studied in Paris alongside his friend St Thomas Aquinas. He worked attentively in the Order of St Francis after the death of Francis, seeking a progressive development of the order while it was still in its early stage. While doing so, he received his degree as Doctor of the Church. He later became Cardinal and Bishop of Albanio, one of the suffrages of Rome.
