2 Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... second Sunday of Lent: Jesus meets the need of each disciple. To the fearful in the upper room, He speaks words of peace. To doubting Thomas, He provides the tangible proof of His resurrection. What do I need to become His disciple? What do I have to share that might meet someone else s need? Dear Sisters and Brothers, I hope that last week was very spiritually productive in your personal faith journey with Jesus. It's easy to slip back into our old patterns and to forget our resolution -- easy to be struck at first by the nature of the desert, and then even more easy to grow tired of it! But STICK WITH IT!! The desert has a lot to teach us, because the desert eventually transforms us. That is precisely what this Sunday's Gospel teaches us. Because we look at Jesus with eyes of faith. Beyond the flesh and blood, in faith we behold a glimpse of His glory, of the brilliance of light. Faith brings us to experience how Jesus is transfigured -- and causes us to be transformed as well! Monday is the Feast of St. Patrick, one of the secondary patrons of our Archdiocese, and Wednesday is the Solemnity of St. Joseph, patron of the Universal Church! Reflection on Today s Readings: FOCUS: Lent is not merely a time for spiritual renewal, but also a time to show our compassion and care for others. Lent offers us a time to renew ourselves in faith by growing in prayer and reflection and in our relationship with Jesus. This can be done by increased familiarity with Scripture, private and community prayer and celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We are also to grow our faith through our charity and compassion for others. LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the Book of Genesis, Abram makes an act of faith in God and goes to where He has called him to journey. Paul tells of the strength to bear hardship that comes from God. Something that is luminous gives light and shines brightly. In the Transfiguration, the voice from the cloud sheds light on who Jesus is, and it was frightening for the disciples. It was almost too much information for them. At times we wish we knew more about God and could see Him up close. But until we re ready, it would be too much for us. 4 Ministry Equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith LENT 2014 ABSTINENCE Is a penitential practice consisting of refraining from the consumption of meat and is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and the Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence. Pastors and parents are encouraged to see that children who are not bound by the obligation to fast and abstain are led to appreciate an authentic sense of penance. FASTING AND ABSTINENCE In addition to abstinence, fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of years (inclusive). On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Note: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition. Come and adore our Lord in the most Blessed Sacrament. You are personally invited to accept this invitation of grace for a holy hour especially during Lent. Invite family members, neighbors, and friends to join you. Your joy with the Lord may be what others are looking for. There are no set prayers, this is an invitation to grace, your personal time with the Lord but some suggestions are the rosary, praying for vocations, for the sick, our fragile world, your personal intentions or just being in the presence of Jesus himself; body, blood, soul and divinity. Simple Sharing and Breaking Bread Supper will be Hosted by different ministries for the FOUR consecutive Wednesdays in March. WHAT IS SIMPLE SOUP? WHY DO WE DO IT? The Simple Soup Supper is an intergenerational fellowship that meets for a soup dinner after the Wednesday evening 5:30 PM Lenten Mass. Various ministries HOST this activity supplying the soups and bread. The Host group also assists with the clean up. There is a basket at each table for those who wish to donate. This is a free will offering. The money collected during the Lenten supper will be given to St. Margaret s Center. This year St. Anastasia Parish families will be asked to Host a Simple Soup on Wednesday, March 26th. There will be sign-up sheet in the Courtyard for those who would like to participate. 5 Ministry in Community Support Alexandria House: For our eighth grade service-learning project, we are having a gently used goods drive to help Alexandria House. Alexandria House is a transitional residence for women and their children in the process of moving from emergency shelter to permanent housing. Items needed include clothing, kitchen items, small appliances, bedding, and children's toys. Items will be collected in the Diamond Courtyard from 8 am to 12 pm on March 16th and 23rd. ST ANASTASIA SOCIAL CLUB NEWS We will again be traveling to Laughlin (2 nights, 3 days) on May Our stay at the Riverside Hotel & Casino will include 3 buffets and a Laughlin Fun Book discount coupons). The price includes the hotel, bus, all gratuities, with water and a raffle on the bus. $100 pp (double), $117 pp (single). If 50 or more sign up, the price will be reduced $10. The Riverside is requiring that we visit an additional time before we can again attend the Luau (which will be Sept ). The Pageant is a unique presentation of the life of Christ through "living" reproductions of famous art works. This theatrical masterpiece includes life-sized paintings and sculptures, utilizing live models within the art, accompanied by original narration and the Rolling Hills Covenant Church sanctuary choir and orchestra. To register to attend, please CStephan@StCamillusCenter.org Blessings, Father Chris Ponnet Fact of Life: The Language of Assisted Suicide by John Stonestreet of Life...A report in the New York Times by Erik Eckholm shines a light on the evolution and corruption of language. "Helping the terminally ill end their lives, condemned for decades as immoral, is gaining traction. Banned everywhere but Oregon until 2008, it is now legal in five states. Its advocates, who have learned to shun the term 'assisted suicide,' believe that as baby boomers watch frail parents suffer, support for what they call the 'aid in dying' movement will grow further." He notes that much of this support depends on which term is used. A pro-suicide group which ironically calls itself "Compassion and Choices" is twisting the language by insisting that killing oneself is only suicide if the person has severe depression or other mental problems. The rest are simply seeking to die with dignity. Human life has dignity because we're created in the image of God...and we are not our own; we belong to God. All life is valuable; cheapening the life of one human cheapens life for all...the very young, the very old, the poor, the disabled, and the prisoner. IMPORTANT REMINDERS! PLEASE NOTE that Simple Soup will ONLY be during the 4 Wednesdays of March! The St. Joseph Center Collection takes place this weekend after all Masses. Your contributions of cash/non-perishable food are greatly appreciated. HOW OLD DOES A CHILD NEED TO BE IN ORDER TO STAY ALONE? Do not assume that when your child understands what you are saying, he is ready to walk out the door by himself. Besides the fact that many states have laws against leaving children of certain ages alone (for example, younger than 12), experts say children should not be left by themselves until they are capable of fighting off an abductor or handling a crisis situation. Experts also say children do not have the mental maturity to cross busy streets by themselves until they are about 10 or 12 years old. Finally, parents who are certain their young children would never walk away with a stranger will be shocked to learn that studies show they probably will.
