2 Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... THE DEMANDS OF DISCIPLESHIP: Today we encounter readings that already have a Lenten feel about them. Nineveh undergoes a forty-day fast, the psalmist reminds us that God alone can show sinners the way, Paul shows us how fleeting the things and events of this world are, and Jesus cries out "Repent!" before he calls his new followers. "Come after me," Jesus says, but if we are to truly live out the commands and demands of our discipleship through baptism, we must first know our need for conversion, our repentance, our need to believe in the gospel fully. Today's Gospel opens with the stark reminder of what befell John the Baptist for completely living out his vocation as the herald of Christ and the gospel: he was arrested, imprisoned, and martyred. How many times do we have to stumble and fall before we realize that following God s ways, and not our own, leads to happiness and salvation? Let us not resist the Lord, but answer his call. Reflections on Today s Readings: LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the first reading, the reluctant prophet Jonah gets a quick response today from the people of Nineveh. Saint Paul speaks with urgency, telling the Corinthians that time is running out. Jesus begins his ministry by calling four Apostles changing the direction of their lives. The Church will be CLOSED on Sundays after the 7:30 PM evening Mass. We encourage all to read and reflect on the Biblical passages that will be proclaimed at all Masses on January 27th & 28th. First Reading -- Moses spoke to all the people, saying: "A prophet like me will the LORD, your God, raise up for you" (Deuteronomy 18:15-20). Psalm -- If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts (Psalm 95). Second Reading -- Brothers and sisters: I should like you to be free of anxieties (1 Corinthians 7:32-35). Gospel -- The people were astonished at Jesus' teaching (Mark 1:21-28). KIDS LIVING FAITH: Can you imagine what it must have been like for the apostles when they first met Jesus? They were working on their boats, getting ready to cast our their fishing nets. They didn t know who Jesus was. But when Jesus asked them to follow him, they dropped everything to join him. Some might call these new apostles crazy for listening to Jesus. But they weren't crazy. They were courageous. They sacrificed everything they had to follow Jesus to bring faith to millions of people through the ages. 4 MINISTRY IN COMMUNITY Fact of Life: "The Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children : In all the Dioceses of the United States of America, January 22 shall be observed as a particular day of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life and of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion. For more information, go to God, author of all life, bless, we pray, all unborn children; give constant protection and grant a healthy birth that is the sign of our rebirth one day into the eternal rejoicing of heaven. Lord, who have brought to these women the wondrous joy of motherhood, grant tham comfort in all anxiety and make them determined to lead their children along the ways of salvation. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my savior. Teach me your ways, O Lord. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS FISH FRY DINNER! Altar Server training sessions begin on Tuesday, January 23rd. Training time options will consist of either 7:15am-8:00 a.m. sessions or 3:00 p.m.- 3:45 p.m. sessions. Sessions are to be held on Tuesday, January 23rd, Wednesday, January 24th, Thursday, January 25th, Tuesday, January 30th, Wednesday, January 31st and Thursday, February 1st. It is extremely important for the trainee to attend all six sessions and arrive on time! St. Margaret s Center s staff wishes to thank all of the St. Anastasia families, both in the school and parish, who adopted families at Christmas, and donated through the Giving Tree to our Christmas Program for low-income families that took place on December 16 th at Lennox Middle School. The families were touched by the outpouring of generosity that made their holiday truly memorable. In all, 450 families, with 1,056 children were assisted with your donations. 5 Ministry equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith PILGRIMAGE TO EASTERN Poland - Czech Republic - Austria - Hungary September with Fr. Annual Donation Statement Information In January the parish office will be sending donation statements to those who donated $100 or more during IRS rules require a written acknowledgement only for individual gifts of $250 or more, but the statements are a reminder to claim the deduction for those who itemize. Donations will be included in your annual donation statement only if they are delivered via the collection basket or to the parish office by December 31, or if postmarked on or before December 31. Donations will otherwise be credited to 2018 contributions. If you have a record of contributions not shown in your statement, please contact the parish office. Did you know that the St. Anastasia Altar Care Ministry devotes itself to God s greater glory by keeping the temple of the Lord beautiful in His presence. These volunteers are called to clean and prepare our church for us on a regular basis. We are very grateful for their efforts to care for our church in this very special way. Each one of you has received a special grace, so, like good stewards responsible for all these varied graces of God, put it at the service of others. -1 Peter 4:10 TIPS FOR NATURAL DISASTER PREPAREDNESS: Know where your kids are at all times; Stay together; Take photos of your children with you when evacuated; Give children identification information to carry with them, including the child s name, date of birth, address, phone numbers, etc.; digital photos of all family members to extended relatives and/or friends; Photocopy important documents and mail to a friend/relative in a safe location; Make a plan with your children, so they know what to do if your family becomes separated during an evacuation.
