2 Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... Solemnity of Pentecost - One miracle of Pentecost was that, despite their diversity, each listener heard God s word in his or her own language. The meaning for stewardship is that, by sharing the gifts poured out on us by the Holy Spirit, we will be empowered to meet the needs of our brothers and sisters, whatever they may be. Dear Parishioners, Pentecost Sunday is a great feast of the Church in which we mark the very beginnings of the life of the Church as the fire of the Holy Spirit hovers over the heads of those first believers. Our world is so desperately in need. Most people in our world today speak about how we can achieve our dreams with greater stresses on individual rights and responsibilities in the pursuit of happiness. As followers of Jesus we know that true happiness comes about with something greater -- in the pursuit of VIRTUE. Let us pray that the Holy Spirit will guide us all to greater virtue in our lives, and bear living witness to the truth of the Gospel in the salvation won for us by the Lord Jesus. Happy Pentecost! This Week: Saturday, May 23rd/Sunday, May 24th Solemnity of Pentecost Reflections on Today s Readings: FOCUS: As the Father has sent me, so I send you. It is clear that many of the disciples were terrified after the death and ascension of jesus. It took the power of the Holy Spirit for them to courageously proclaim the Good News. We need to be, filled with the Spirit, so our word and example may reveal God to others. LITURGY OF THE WORD: We hear in the first reading that, as the Holy Spirit comes, the once-fearful disciples are transformed. Their fear of those who would persecuted them gives way to a new courage to proclaim Christ s resurrection. In the Gospel, Jesus bestows the Spirit on the disciples, sends them to do his work, and gives them power to forgive sins. A SIGNIFICANT DAY And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were (Acts 2:2). The Holy Spirit s arrival on that first Pentecost was signaled by a rush of wind. We all know what it s like when our windows are open just as a summer storm rises up. Curtains fly, papers become airborne, house plants shudder, dust is scattered. A rush of wind disrupts the orderliness of our home. The coming of the Holy Spirit, as celebrated each year at Pentecost, can also disrupt ways that have become comfortable and orderly. The Church always needs Pentecost. We need the breath of God s Spirit to blow away any complacency or malaise that has settled into our faith. Jesus breathes on his disciples and they receive the Holy Spirit. In the Old Testament, God mentions widows and orphans among those who should be singled out for special care and protection (Exod. 22:22, Deut. 27:19). Jesus continues this pattern of divine care by heaping scorn on those who would go so far as to foreclose on widows homes (Matt. 23:14). James even says that caring for widows and orphans are the premier fruits of true worship of God. (James 1:27). Since it is clear from even the most cursory reading of the Scriptures that God desires justice for all people, His special mention of it in this context is evidently a warning to those who would take advantage of the weakest members in our society- those least likely to stand up for themselves. They earned the award from the Catholic Committee on Scouting for Boy Scouts in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles after completing months of study on the sacraments and performing community service activities. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Marriage is ideally a parish event today, but in the first three centuries of the church s history, it was a household celebration guided by civil law and pagan customs. Changes happened quickly after the Peace of Constantine in 312, and the fresh air after long persecution brought some creativity. The speech that the father of the groom s family gave before dinner or the veiling or crowning of the bride (or even the spouse s arrival at the honeymoon suite) attracted a prayer of blessing. With amazing rapidity, worship was propelled out of the intimate setting of house churches to large public gathering spaces, and some parts of the marriage ceremony began to migrate with the growing community to the new spaces. In Rome, the veiling of the bride with the customary daily headgear of a married woman became the central liturgical act, accompanied by a biblical prayer for her integrity and fruitfulness. There were no vows as such (just as there are no vows to this day in the Orthodox marriage rite). In the liturgy, after hearing John s Gospel account of the wedding at Cana, the bride was veiled and blessed, and the priest gave the kiss of peace to the husband, who then gave it to his bride. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit Acts 2:3-4 I don t know about you, but if a tongue of fire appeared over my head, I d run and call 911! But the Apostles didn t run away. In fact, they were so full of joy, they went out and preached about Jesus to the whole world. That s how you know when something comes from God. God strengthens and encourages you, through the Holy Spirit. He ll never give you anything to be afraid of. Holy Spirit, give me strength and courage today so I can do whatever God asks of me with joy and love.
