1 St Anastasia Catholic Church Ninth Sunday In Ordinary Time March 6th, W. Manchester Avenue, Los Angeles, CA Phone: Fax: Website: Parish established in 1953 in honor of James Francis Cardinal McIntyre

2 St. Anastasia Catholic Church, Los Angeles, California Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time March 6th, 2011 O look at me and be merciful, for I am wretched and alone. See my hardship and my poverty, and pardon all my sins. Psalm 24:16, 18 Reflection on Today s Readings: FOCUS: The words of love that we speak must be lived out through our actions - We know that we fool no one when we say one thing but do the opposite. Promises made to a boss, a spouse or a friend ring hollow when the action that follows does not bear them out. God is the last person we should try to fool with empty words; He knows what is in our hearts. When we profess love for God, we must also act in loving ways. LITURGY OF THE WORD: Moses urges the people to obey the commandments of God, a blessing on their lives. The second reading reminds us that redemption is a gift from God to all people, brought about through the Blood of Jesus. The Gospel compares those who practice the teachings of Jesus to a wise man who builds his house firmly anchored on a foundation of rock. FACT OF LIFE Planned Parenthood Sets New Record A new report the Planned Parenthood national abortion business recently released shows the embattled agency did more abortions in 2009 than it has done in any prior year. The report also shows it providing fewer pregnant women with non-abortion services. Planned Parenthood Federation of America recently posted on its website what it calls its service numbers for This document, dated February 2011, shows Planned Parenthood affiliates nationwide did 332,278 surgical abortions or abortions using the dangerous RU 486 abortion drug during Planned Parenthood has been on the receiving end of significant negative publicity related to undercover videos showing its officials helping investigators posing as sex traffickers obtain abortions and STD testing for underage girls who are victims of the sex trade. The abortion business has defended itself in part by attempting to show that abortions constitute a small percentage of its overall services. However, the new numbers make it more clear that women who are pregnant who come to Planned Parenthood receive only abortion services rather than help and support. (LifeNews.com Feb 23, 2011). Prayer for Life: Father, fill your people with new hope. Make us vessels of hope to everyone around us, especially to those who work to protect the unborn. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen. 3 Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Ministries in Action March 6th, th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Today s readings call us to active discipleship. It is not enough to know the commandments; we must actively obey them. It is not enough to hear the words of Jesus; we must act on them. Good stewards demonstrate their gratitude for the gift of faith by putting it into action. You can help create a safer environment for children by leaving your parish or community environment safer each day than when you started. This could be as simple as training yourself to do a more effective job of keeping your eye on those around you when they interact with children. It sounds overly simple but most of us don t really do it, and it can be an easy habit to develop. It just takes persistence and a way to measure your success. For example, in order to make yourself notice those who are interacting with children, you could try counting the number of children you see each day interacting with non-parental adults. Okay so this would be a little unrealistic for a schoolteacher but for the rest of us it could be a very big learning experience. To learn more about parish efforts to create safe environments for our children, please contact the parish office. For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at LENT 2011 Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, which falls on Wed., March 9th, this year. The Catholic Community around the world follows these general regulations during Lent. ABSTINENCE Is a penitential practice consisting of refraining from the consumption of meat and is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and the Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence. Pastors and parents are encouraged to see that children who are not bound by the obligation to fast and abstain are led to appreciate an authentic sense of penance. FASTING AND ABSTINENCE In addition to abstinence, fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of years (inclusive). On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Note: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition. We Need Stuff! - The St. Anastasia school children will be participating in a school family activity for Lent on Tue., March 15th. Each school family will be creating their very own Station of the Cross. We are asking you to participate in this event by bringing in a variety of objects, artifacts, related to our suffering, our everyday work, and for the greater glory of God as we strive for the Kingdom of Heaven. These decorated crosses will be planted throughout the campus during Lent. A box is in the vestibule. Call Jonette for info Thanks! PALMS: We are collecting palms for Shrove Tuesday, March 8th. Box in the Vestibule. The Burning of the Palms service takes place on Shrove Tuesday, Mar. 8th at 11:45 am. in the School grounds. All are welcome! Dear Parishioners, This past weekend our students delighted audiences with their rendition of Guys and Dolls. The play gives students an opportunity to venture into new and creative roles. There are students who may find this an opportunity to exhibit talents which often remain hidden. I also know that parents and students have spent endless hours practicing for this event. Thank you to everyone involved in this long process for our students. Your hard work paid off in a performance that makes us all so proud. I am so sorry I personally was unable to attend. Special thanks to: Greg Koppenhaver, Suzette Sornborger, Brigitte Obel and Angelica Roque. Devotedly, Fr. Gabe Stewardship in action Save the Date! As we approach the Holy Season of Lent, please consider joining us for one or all of these opportunities. They are designed to help you think, ponder, reflect and consider and eventually perhaps to discuss about the meaning of the suffering and death of Jesus Christ for you! Wednesday(s) 5:30 pm Mass followed by the Simple Soup in the Parish Hall This Simple Sharing and Breaking Bread Activity will be Hosted by different ministries for each of the Wednesdays during Lent (except Holy Week, April 20th).* WHAT IS SIMPLE SOUP? 4 Ninth Sunday in Ordinary time Caring for Creation, Caring for the Poor March 6th, 2011 From the Music Director Congratulations to our young cast members of Guys and Dolls, who put on a fantastic show last weekend at Westchester High. I am grateful that we at St. A s are able to provide such a great opportunity for our students, and I would like to thank everyone who supported our show in any way, the William Hannon Foundation, the Msgr. Vadakin Arts in Education Fund, and every individual who contributed in any way. I could write several chapters of a book about the benefits I see in our students who participate in our productions. We are very fortunate and I am extremely grateful that we as a community come together to provide this for our children. Thank you, all! Greg Koppenhaver FROM THE DIRECTOR : Among the Warmest Years on Record, Insurance Losses Staggering: In a report to its reinsurance committee, the chairman of Munich Re said, Fire, water, earth and air the four basic elements have seldom been so destructive as in 2010, as reported in ClimateWire. Global losses came to $150 billion (one-third of this total were earthquakes clearly not climate related) and insurers paid out $37 billion in claims. The World Meteorological Organization expects 2010 to be the third warmest year globally since records began in As scientists have predicted, global climate change will continue to create extreme weather events. For the Catholic community, our concern is for those who don t have the resources to recover from their losses. We think especially of the millions of people dislocated by the epic floods in Pakistan, the raging fires near Moscow or those in and around Nashville, Tennessee and thank you for your generosity to Catholic Charities and Catholic Relief Services. As climate change continues, we must all become more diligent about lessening our carbon footprint and remember in solidarity those who are under our footprint. Visit also: catholicclimatecovenant.org. St. Anastasia s Social Club invites you to our Annual St. Patrick s/ St. Joseph s Luncheon! Whether you are Irish, Italian or Heinz 57, Good food and drink will be waiting in the Parish Hall on Wednesday, March 16 at noon. Fun, bingo, prizes, and camaraderie all for only $15.
