1 St. Anastasia Catholic Church Third Sunday of Advent December 16th, W. Manchester Avenue, Los Angeles, CA Phone: Fax: Website: Parish established in 1953 in honor of James Francis Cardinal McIntyre

2 Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... Third Sunday of Advent: Today s Gospel provides a blueprint for good stewardship: Let the man who has two coats give to him who has none. The man who has food should do the same. Luke 3:11 Dear Parishioners, As we approach Christmas on this Third Sunday of Advent or "Gaudete Sunday" (In Latin "All-of-you Rejoice Sunday"), it's a day to step back, count our blessings, take stock of things, and praise God, truly rejoicing for the spiritual strength and hope on which we are able to build our lives. To rejoice means that a certain happiness springs out from the soul in a conviction of faith. We can rejoice about a lot of things, but today we especially rejoice with all the Church, about the joy of salvation as we listen to the admonition of the Baptist preparing the way of the Lord! I am doing a little better with continuing therapy. Now that I am recuperating at another rectory, the doctors -- to whom I am listening -- are telling me that I will need to be doing some home physical therapy for about a month, then doing some outpatient therapy afterward. The progress is slow and steady. I am concentrating on doing things on my own power, rather than by wheelchair. I am able to use a walker now, and I am able to use stairs - though slowly. My motor coordination is still a little clumsy, but I am working very hard on it. Christmas spirit has a whole new meaning for me!! I pray for all of you every day with a shepherd's love. I miss you, and look forward to getting back to Saint A's!! Love, Father Gabe LORD HEAR OUR PRAYER For those who are ill, and those in need of our prayers Please let us know about the condition of those for whom we pray so that we can keep/remove their name(s) as requested, after the first few weeks. 3 Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... Reflection on Today s Readings: Focus: Let us rejoice in Gaudete Sunday, half way to Christmas. Its color rose is a sign of hope. When excitement builds, as it certainly does for children at Christmastime, there is often a temptation to jump right into the event without having properly prepared for it. We do this too often. Such things take away from the joy of the actual feast. We still have time to properly prepare our souls and our hearts for the true meaning of Christmas. Liturgy of the Word: The first reading from Zephaniah exhorts the Israelites to rejoice and be glad. The second reading from Philippians reminds us that we are to rejoice in the Lord always. In the Gospel, John the Baptist teaches that one mightier that he was coming who would baptize people with the Holy Spirit and fire. Next Week - Celebrating Our Faith Sat. Dec. 22nd & Sun., Dec. 23rd, Fourth Sunday of Advent Masses: Sat: 5:30 pm. Sun: 7:30 am. Sun: 9:00 am. Sun: 10:30 am. Sun: 12:00 Noon Sun: 7:30 pm. Celebrants: Msgr. Vadakin Fr. Tom Fr. Tom Msgr. Please call Sr. Teresita at , or call the Rectory Office at Traveling Holy Family - Family 1 Chris and Jennifer Walter 12/16/12 Libby DuBay 12/23/12 Traveling Holy Family - Family 2 Chuck and Janet Nelson 12/16/12 Chris & Jennifer Kaczor 12/23/12 Today has traditionally been called Gaudete Sunday. The Latin tag is derived from Paul s appeal in the second reading to rejoice always in the Lord, and the Latin Mass text based on that reading. The irony and paradox of this Christmas joy is underlined by the fact that Paul wrote those words in prison. But from there he could see the progress of God s work. Is it obvious to us? We feel that this is not the time for joy when there is so much suffering and moral evil. It is interesting, then, that the first reading is from the prophet Zephaniah, who is almost exclusively concerned with gloomy visions of the Judgment Day. Today the Church select the only optimistic text in Zephaniah, in which the prophet has been touched by the spirit of joy. This, we are assured on all sides, is the season of joy. Let us recapture that feeling of joy in our lives and reflect it to those who are joyless. - Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Living God s Word: When we pray the Our Father at Mass the priest voices a prayer that asks the Lord to free our minds of worry as we look forward to Jesus coming. Joyful hope gives us the spirit and the confidence to do all that we can, expecting that Christ s saving power will be present in our midst. - Copyright 2012, World Library Publications. We encourage all to read and reflect on the Biblical passages that will be proclaimed at all Masses next Sunday: Reading 1: Reading 2: Gospel: Mi 5:1-4a Heb 10:5-10 Lk 1:39-45 SATURDAY CONFESSIONS: 3:30-5 pm & 7:30-8 pm ** Msgr. 4 Ministry in Community Welcome the Year of Faith! Faith is an integral part of our lives; it is interwoven into everything we do. In light of this, Pope Benedict XVI has proclaimed the Year of Faith as a way to nourish and deepen our faith in God and His Church. From October 11, 2012, to November 24, 2013, we are called to prayer, study, outreach, and evangelization so that we might live out the call of discipleship to be joyful witnesses to Christ. The Mass is a unique and marvelous sacrifice. It is the mystical reality in which Christ s sacrifice on the cross is renewed. The Mass is also a sacred banquet where together as the Church family we fulfill Jesus command at the Last Supper to Do this in memory of me. The Office of Safeguard the Children is dedicated to "protecting all of God's children" by fully implementing Article 12 of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People adopted by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in The Office of Safeguard the Children provides ongoing support, education, training and resources to help prevent child sexual abuse and to address children's safety in our parishes, schools, homes and communities. FACT OF LIFE Reasons the Pro-Life Cause is Winning, III Sign 10: Corruption uncovered A key reason we are winning is that abortion destroys itself. The evil inner workings of abortion are being exposed for all to see... and as more and more crimes become visible, the abortion movement loses supporters. These crimes include medical malpractice, sexual abuse, injury and death that routinely occur in so-called safe and legal abortion clinics, doctors not sterilizing instruments, anesthesiologists who have no training in anesthesia, abortions committed on women who were not pregnant, falsifying medical records, and much more. What s more, the abortion industry creates a safe haven for sexual predators.... Clinics can be closed and are closing and abortionists being jailed for reasons having nothing to do with what people think about abortion... but rather for reasons related to malpractice, abuse, and other illegal activity. The fundamental reason why we re winning Above all else, the reason why we are winning the fight to end abortion is because we have already won! There is one among us who holds the keys of death and of hell. Jesus Christ is Risen from the dead! Although thought to be overwhelmed by the agents of death... He trampled death by His death. As a result, death has been robbed of its power. O death, where is thy sting? Because of Christ s Resurrection, death no longer has the final word in the human story. Our final destiny is heaven... not the grave! This means that the power of abortion which takes more life than anything else has also been broken. Our pro-life movement does not simply work for victory... we work from victory! Victory is our starting point. We joyfully proclaim to the world that Christ is Risen, and that for this reason, we must choose life. Fr. Frank Pavone, Priests for Life, ten-reasons.pdf

No contribution is too small! The King of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst, you have no further misfortune to fear. - Zephanian 3:15b Living Faith for Kids By prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 Many children at this time of year have written lists for Santa in hope of getting the gift they want at Christmas. Maybe they will get the gift they want, but maybe they won t. That s just the way it is with lists for Santa. St. Paul says we would make our requests to God, but without worry and with thanksgiving. Then we are sure to receive something in return: peace. Lord, help me to put worry away and trust in You in all things. Zephaniah 3:14-18 * Isaiah 12:2-6 Philippians 4:4-7 * Luke 3: Calendars are available in the Vestibule. Please take one per family!
