2 Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... August 7th, 2016, 19th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: Today s Gospel urges us to give generously and thus build up treasure in heaven. For wherever your treasure lies, there your heart will be. Luke 12:34 OUR FATHER IN FAITH The Letter to the Hebrews today sings a hymn of praise to Abraham and to his faith, upon which are founded the religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Abraham is called father in faith by more people on earth than anybody else, numerous as the sands of the seashore or the stars of the heavens. Hebrews tells us it was this foundational faith that led Abraham to obey God s call when he heard it, though he was called to journey to a land he did not know and told he would father a mighty race through a marriage he thought was barren. But Abraham s faith, the author of Hebrews tells us, was his realization of what he hoped for, and the evidence of what he could not see. How often are we, in simple daily events of our own Christian vocation, called to an unfamiliar place or told we are to do something we do not believe we can? This Week: Saturday, August 6th / Sunday, August 7th Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflections on Today s Readings: FOCUS: Through placing our faith in God and living according to His commands, we become a source of hope. As we read almost daily about terrorism and violence, it can seem like the good guys are losing. This is not the case. As long as believers in God s way exist, there is hope that love will overtake hate, good will overtake evil. Jesus perfect sacrifice of love upon the cross is definitive proof that the power of sin and evil has been defeated. What more do we need? LITURGY OF THE WORD: Our first reading from the Book of Wisdom recalls the great Exodus event. The people s faith in God gave them courage to weather the storms they faced. Our reading from Hebrews recalls Abraham s journey of faith, which gave him the courage to follow through in doing God s will. In the Gospel, Jesus talks with His disciples about faithful and foolish stewards, encouraging them to choose wisely. Godfrey Tuhairwe, a Diocesan Priest from the Diocese of Hoima in Uganda, will be here that weekend preaching and sharing with us his Missionary work in that community and their many needs; spiritual and materials. Fr. Godfrey was ordained on July 12, He first worked at the Cathedral Parish for two years. From 2010 to present, he has been serving as a Parish Priest at Uganda Martyrs Catholic Parish Buseesa, Uganda, Africa. Social Club News: Join us for our September Laughlin Casino and Luau Trip. Luke 12:34 A lot of people search for treasure - not the kind that s buried or marked an X on a pirate s map. For some people, treasures are things, like toys, baseball cards or the latest game console. But real treasure isn t always something you can touch. It could be the love of your family, the warmth of the sun on your face or a talent God has given you. When you think about it, God has given us lots of treasures, and we don t have to search hard for them. What are some treasure God has given you? All this week we re talking about how we can share our treasures with others so everyone can be happy! God, thank you for the treasures you give. They are where my heart is. FACT OF LIFE Mexican State Votes to Ban Abortions The Mexican state of Veracruz (which means true cross ), approved a constitutional amendment that effectively bans abortions by recognizing that unborn babies deserve protection. Gov. Javier Duartes is one of the strongest advocates for the pro-life law, which protects life from conception. if approved, Veracruz would become the latest one of a list of Mexican states that have outlawed the procedure.
