2 This Week: Saturday, June 9th, 2018 / Sunday, June 10th, 2018 Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflections on Today s Readings: FOCUS: Jesus, our path to salvation, calls us brother and sister and commands that we do the will of God. From the beginning, God has promised his people redemption. His love is stronger than sin and prevails over evil. Jesus comes to us to embody that love and set an example for us to follow. In doing God s will, he shows us the way to the Father and calls us to do the same on our journey to eternal life. LITURGY OF THE WORD; In Genesis, sin enters the world as Adam and Eve yield to the serpent s temptation. Paul s Letter to the Corinthians urges believers not to be discouraged: our earthly dwelling fades, but life in the Lord is eternal. Mark s Gospel shows Jesus being described by the scribes as possessed. Jesus responds with a promise that doing the will of God makes us his brothers and sisters. 4 Saint Anastasia was born in 281 A.D. and became a perfect symbol of peace, humanity, and solidarity. Her Feast Day is December 25th. She is a symbol of dialogue and collaboration. Leszek is inviting all those who have signed up to join the pilgrimage to Poland, Czech Republic, Austria, and Hungary September 4-16, 2018 to attend an important meeting. SOCIAL CLUB NEWS: LET S GO TO THE GETTY VILLA Join the St. Anastasia Social Club for an exciting trip to the Getty Villa. We will start our adventure with a stop at the Santa Monica Pier and lunch at Bubba Gump Shrimp, followed by free time to stroll the pier and visit the many retail, food, and entertainment outlets. We will then journey on to the Getty Villa Malibu. The Villa has recently gone through an extensive renovation and is again displaying some of the world s finest art and rare Greek, Roman, and Etruscan antiquities. Over 1200 items are on view. During your visit, you may join several tours highlighting the architecture, gardens, and permanent collection. We will be leaving St. Anastasia at 10:45 AM on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 and returning about 6:00 PM. The price is $63 per person and includes your lunch and the bus driver s tip. During our most difficult times, we see who sticks by us. Can you think of a friend who has stuck by you in tough times? It is also during these times that we can call on Jesus to be our friend. Jesus promises that he will always be with us, no matter what. He is just a prayer away, so reach out when you need him! Jesus, thank you for being my friend. 5 Ministry equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith St. Anthony of Padua St. Anthony of Padua was born August 15, 1195 in Lisbon, Portugal. Anthony joined the order of Franciscan monks and was known for his inspiring homilies and commitment to a life of poverty. We ask St. Anthony to help us find lost or stolen items. According to the story, Anthony had a book of psalms which contained notes and comments he had made to use in teaching his students. A novice, who had decided to leave the hermitage, took the book with him. Anthony prayed it would be found or returned. The thief returned the book to Anthony and returned to the order. The stolen book is said to be preserved in the Franciscan friary in Bologna. His feast day is celebrated on June 13th as a Doctor of the Church. PROMISES - Today's liturgy is full of promises. The reading from Genesis promises a final triumph over the power of sin and a return to a new creation. The reading from 2nd Corinthians promises that all who follow Christ will have to struggle. It also promises, however, that we can persevere if we but recognize that Christ is within us, renewing us daily, and giving us the courage and the strength we need to endure. The Gospel promises that doing God's will makes us "family" with Jesus, who forgives all sin and triumphs over evil. Today might be a good day for us to make some promises as well. We can promise to stop kidding ourselves about our own tendencies to selfishness and sin. We can promise ourselves to believe--really believe--that while we are not sinless, we are forgiven. FACT OF LIFE Foster Parents Needed "When many people think about Los Angeles, they think of celebrities and ocean views. Within the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, we have some of the wealthiest zip codes and some of the poorest in the U.S., too. We have more homeless people and more people incarcerated in Los Angeles County than anywhere in the country. We are one of the top cities for numbers of abortions and victims of human trafficking. And, we have 34,000 children in foster care the most in the country. The sheer scale of all of this can seem insurmountable. We decided to look at the situation in terms of where our parishes could be the most effective, and we realized that our greatest assets are our Catholic families. Our families are incredibly generous. They want to help, but so many don t know how. Once we began talking to people about fostering, the response has been incredible. Most people don t know that over 20 percent of foster children in Los Angeles are under the age of two. The need is staggering.
