2 Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time: You shall love the Lord, your God, With all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your strength. Deuteronomy 6:5 Dear Parishioners, The Gospel passage for today is a special call in this Year of Faith to love God with all that we are, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. God s love is everything for us. In everything, let us show our love for God! Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! His love is everlasting! We have a very beautiful tradition of remembering all our beloved dead during the month of November. You can still include names of your loved ones for our special Masses. Envelopes are in the Church. As I was reflecting on the importance of the preaching ministry, I happened to ask some of our students, What is a priest s most important job? I was fully expecting To preach the Gospel. I was embarrassed when a student stood up and said, To be holy! He is right. You cannot give what you don t have. So this week I will be away for my annual retreat. I want to learn how to be a more holy priest. The Church asks each priest to make at least one retreat each year so that we have holy priests. Please keep me in your prayers this week. Thank you for your love and support. 3 Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... Reflection on Today s Readings: Focus: God s Love encourages us to be forgiving of ourselves and of our neighbors as God loves and forgives us. The heart is transformed into a welcoming fullness when it seeks to embrace God s love. His love provides the balm that heals our hearts torn by the abundance of sin in this world. The eternal High priest, Jesus, intercedes guiding our hearts to eagerly seek the glory of the Father s love. Liturgy of the Word: Moses presents the universal obligation to God, neighbor, and self that if followed, would reap abundant promise. Paul tells us that Jesus, by His suffering, death, and resurrection brought to fullness the temple sacrifice. This personal sacrifice, offered once, is for our salvation. 4 Ministry in Community Traveling with kids during the holidays can be a challenge, especially with the added worry of safety thrown into the mix. Here are some suggestions parents can use to help ensure their children s safety while traveling: 1. Prior to leaving on your holiday, remind children about your family safety procedures for dealing with strangers and what to do if they get lost. 2. Keep a recent photo of children handy, also a photocopy of passports kept in a safe place or with a relative that can fax it to you in case of loss. 3. If you label children s clothing, make sure the label is inside so strangers are not able to learn child s name. For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) Fall Film/Book Study Three Journeys of Faith To celebrate our 20 th year, we have been viewing portions of three films on Thursday evenings at 7:30 9:00 PM in the school basement. This Thursday will be our last session: November 8 Invictus a Clint Eastwood film featuring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon in a dissection of faith and self-determination set against the background of Nelson Mandela s election as president of South Africa. There is no need for you to preview the film, although you are certainly welcome to do so. FACT OF LIFE Public Witness and Catholic Citizenship Public witness on issues of public concern is natural for Catholics because we have a commitment to the common good and to the dignity of each human person. Those two pillars the common good and the dignity of every human person come right out of Scripture. They underpin all of Catholic social thought.... Catholic is a word that has real meaning. We don t control or invent that meaning as individuals. We inherit it from the Gospel and the experience of the Church over the centuries. If we choose to call ourselves Catholic, then that word has consequences for what we believe and how we act. We can t truthfully call ourselves Catholic and then behave as if we re not... Each of us needs to follow his or her own conscience. But conscience doesn t emerge miraculously from a vacuum. The way we get a healthy conscience is by submitting it to God s will; and the way we find God s will is by listening to the counsel of the Church and trying honestly to live in accord with her guidance. If we find ourselves frequently disagreeing, as Catholics, with the teaching of our own Church on serious matters, then it s probably not the Church that s wrong. The problem is much more likely with us. In the end, the heart of truly faithful citizenship is this: We re better citizens when we re more faithful Catholics. The more authentically Catholic we are in our lives, choices, actions and convictions, the more truly we will contribute to the moral and political life of our nation. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all yout soul, with all yout mind, and with all your strength.. -Mark 12:29-30 Everyone wants to be first first in line, best in class, tops in sports. Even God wants to be first first in your life. Obeying the commandments and living a virtous life is important, but before all that, we need to want God present in everything we do and say. If religion is just something for Sundays or certain friends, something else is coming first. Lord, help me love You with all I am and all I have.
