2 St. Anastasia Catholic Church, Los Angeles, California 30th Sunday in ordinary time October 23rd, 2011 Let hearts rejoice who search for the Lord. Seek the Lord and His strength, seek always the face of the Lord. Psalm 104:3-4 Reflection on Today s Readings: FOCUS: Loving God and our neighbor is not always easy or convenient - Loving God and neighbor is far more that a pious platitude. It strikes at the core of how we are to conduct ourselves as followers of Jesus. It is not always a welcome command, especially when we are in the middle of an argument. To love is God s great command to each of us, nonetheless. LITURGY OF THE WORD: Today s first reading reminds us of our responsibilities to those in need. In the second reading, Paul praises the Thessalonians for their love and faithfulness to God. In the Gospel, Jesus summarizes all of the Law and the prophets: love God with all your heart, soul and mind; and love your neighbor as yourself. FACT OF LIFE A People Of and For Life Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta used to love the Gospel story of the Visitation. She always pointed to this detail how St. John the Baptist leapt in St. Elizabeth s womb when Mary walked into the room. She said: Something very beautiful, something very wonderful happened. The first human being to recognize the presence of Jesus was the little one in the womb of his mother who leaped with joy. It is so beautiful to think that God gave that little unborn child the greatness of proclaiming the presence of Jesus on earth.... An unborn child was the first to bear witness to Jesus! God loved us so much that he entered into this world as each one of us did through the womb of a mother. Jesus Christ took our human nature and spent nine months in the womb! Why would he do this? To show us that human life is sacred. To show us that every life is precious to God. To show us that each of us is a child of God who is loved in a special way by our Father in heaven. And this is why Christians have been defending the right to life from the very beginnings of the Church. (Archbishop José H. 3 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time Ministries in Action 30th Sunday of Ordinary Time - The bishops pastoral letter on stewardship reminds us, Jesus not only calls people to him but also forms them and sends them out in his service. Being sent on a mission is a consequence of being a disciple. ewaste Recycling Event to benefit St. A s Catholic School s Technology Program When: Sat., October 29, from 9 am to 3 pm. Where: Church parking lot Do you have old computers, printers, TVs or any other appliances taking up space? Bring them to the St. Anastasia Catholic School ewaste recycling event and have them recycled! You'll clean up some space, help protect the environment and generate donations for a worthy cause. You'll receive a receipt for a charitable donation. Any electrical appliance is eligible, as well as light bulbs, toner cartridges, battery operated devices, cell phones and computer parts. We can make arrangements for large item pickups as well. Please contact Joseph Gruenling at if you have questions or need assistance. Parish Ball and Silent Auction Donations! Once again, St. A s Catholic school is sponsoring the Parish Ball and Silent Auction in support of our children. The event will be held on March 10, 2011 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Redondo Beach. We are asking our local and neighboring businesses and families to support our school by donating an item or service to the Silent Auction or becoming an Event Sponsor of our program. If you know of any businesses, local service providers, friends or family that may want to donate to our fundraising event, please contact Jackie Aguilera at jackie.aguilera@bingham.com or and we will reach out to them directly. This is a great way for local businesses, neighbors and friends to market their services to our community families while contributing to a worthy cause. No contribution is too small! October 23rd, 2011 Dear Parishioners, I want to thank all those who worked so hard to put our Parish Picnic together, especially Jane Fortin, Gina Kohler and Sally Hughes; we all had a great time! Today is World Mission Sunday. It is a day when the whole Church everywhere reflects and prays about our main focus and reason for being that the Church is for Mission; that the Lord sends US! We will be successful in our efforts to bring about God s Kingdom to the extent that we have personally experienced and accepted a change of heart, a new beginning, a whole new way of being. It is only when we ourselves change, that we can assist in bringing about the conversion of the world! The missionary activity of the Church starts at home. The St. Anastasia annual Christmas social event will include a 3-course lunch with your choice of entree: prime rib of beef, salmon dill buerre blanc, chicken florentine, or the chef's special pasta. All entrees include beverages and dessert. Dinner will be followed by Tibbies' fabulous Holiday Extravanza Musical Show featuring talented performers and live musicians. Each week we will provide the definitions of some key words which may help to increase your understanding of the rich theology that underlies these texts. Definitions are from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, second edition. Mediator: One who unites or reconciles separate or opposing parties. Thus, Jesus Christ is the one mediator between God and the human race (1 Tm 2:5). Through his sacrificial offering he has become high priest and unique mediator who has gained for us access to the Father through the Holy Spirit.
