Pentecost Sunday : In the second reading today, St. Paul reminds the Corinthians, There are different gifts, but the same Spirit; there are different ministries, but the same Lord. How am I using my gifts for the common good? 1 Corinthians 12:4 Dear Parishioners, Happy Pentecost!! Happy Birthday, Church!! In this great feast of Pentecost your priests wish you countless blessings from the Holy Spirit, that He may enrich our lives with greater faith and with a love that reaches out to others always! 3 Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... FOCUS: Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. Today we celebrate Pentecost, the day when the outpouring of the Holy Spirit transformed a group of frightened, confused disciples into a strong, dedicated community the Church. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, they began boldly preaching the Good News to people of all languages, and making disciples in all nations, as Jesus had instructed. Reflection on Today s Readings: LITURGY OF THE WORD: Today s first reading describes the Apostles experience of the Holy Spirit in which their lives became changed forever. In the second reading, we are made aware that the Spirit manifests itself through a variety of gifts that are used for the common good. John 20:19 Many assume God s presence always comes with great deeds: miracles, speaking in tongues, prophecies, healings. But in this Gospel passage, Jesus comes with only two things: peace (relief from fear) and forgiveness. When you think about it, these two small gifts mean more than all the rest. For without mercy, there is no salvation, and fear can prevent us from doing the great deeds God calls us to. After all, we are part of his body on earth. Pacific Coast Highway, Wilmington, CA Please call first (310) Fact of Life: Celine Dion Was Almost a Victim of Abortion Last week we read about Andrea Bocelli's mother choosing life for him after doctors suggested an abortion. Now we will read how his duet partner from the famous song "The Prayer" faced a similar fate. Music star Celine Dion credits her family's parish priest for convincing her mother not to abort her. Dion said her mother was initially devastated when she learned she was pregnant with Celine, the 14th child in the family, and she asked the priest if she could be permitted to have an abortion. The priest upheld the teachings of the Catholic Church and told her that she could not abort her child. Father s Day Novena of Masses The Novena of Masses for all Fathers who are enrolled for the Novena begins on Father s Day, Sunday, June 15th. Novena cards are available for those whose fathers are alive and for those whose fathers have passed away. We have placed them by the side doors of the Church and in the Vestibule. Please complete an envelope with your father s name (living or deceased) and place it in the collection basket or drop it off at the Parish Office. Happy Father s Day!! SOCIAL CLUB NEWS Are you ready for some fabulous fun at the river? We are now taking reservations for our fall three-day trip to Laughlin and the Riverside Hotel which includes their fabulous Luau. Vacation Bible School will take place July 14 to July 18, 2014 This year s theme is SON TREASURE ISLAND! This year s VBS session is July 14 th -18 th, from 9am to Noon. Your child will discover a treasure more precious than gold, more lasting than diamonds - the greatest treasure of all -God s love! Please call Jonette Mauch at with any questions. Bullying is a form of abuse - Did you know that bullying is a form of abuse, and therefore is forbidden in our Catholic schools? Bullying typically consists of direct behaviors, such as teasing, taunting, threatening, hitting, shoving and stealing. But it might also be indirect, such as spreading rumors that cause victims to be socially isolated through intentional exclusion. Cyberbullying, which involves the use of the Internet or mobile phones to send inappropriate messages and images to or about others, is also behavior that is not tolerated in our Catholic schools. For particular help, you may call the Archdiocese s Victims Assistance Ministry, (213) The Parish Hall (Basement) will be CLOSED for renovation from Saturday, July 19 through Tuesday, August 26. During this time, the Parish Hall (including the bathrooms and kitchen) will be completely closed and unavailable for any meetings, events, or sessions. Thank you! The Retirement Fund for Archdiocesan Priests Collection takes place this weekend, June 7/8, Our Turn to Give Back - This collection offers a way for us to give back to our Catholic priests who have served us so faithfully. Your contribution helps archdiocesan priests live modestly and peacefully in retirement. Help us offer thanks for their years of devotion to God and our communities. Your Gift to the Priest Retirement Fund helps provide a monthly stipend to retired priests of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. For most priests, this assistance is their only means of support.
